What the correct way to call a parent from an embed SWF. In my case I am building a project in flashdevlop but embedding swfs for a few nav elements and I need those to either dispatch an event or call a method so it cant change pages. Best case is calling my "Main" instance. For example "Main.theMethod()" not sure if Main is seen by the embeded swf, I know in as3 I could call _root and get it, not so sure in as3.

i want to add a child of the movie clip on the stage, and call testFunction when it finishes playing
how can i do? i tried to call it in the child but nothing works

Is it possible to call a child function from within the parent? I know to go child > parent, you can do parentApplication.functionName(parameters);, but what about going the other way... that is parent > child?

I have a main document class Main.as with a public static function called mainFunction().

To my knowledge, there are 3 options:1 - parent.publicPropertyOrMethod.2 - using static vars/methods.3 - dispatching events.Under best practise for OOP development, which is the "best" method? Are there any more?I dislike #1 and never use it as it and can easily descend into hideous parent.parent.parent references that are easily broken. #2 has it's own problems whereby attempting to get/set instance variables doesn't always work through a static function (I am yet to completely understand this). #3 is great for triggering methods (I use this the most) but sucks for altering class properties and suchlike.

How do I get the "someButton" in the "child_class" to call the "theImportantFunction" in the main class? I know that it is possible to make a "dispatchEvent" in the "mouseClick" function, and then add a eventlistener in the main class.. But is there another way to just call the function directly?
I have a swf that should be able to load another swf in runtime. Then I would like the loaded swf to call a method of the parent, loader swf, like this:

But when I compile it, it throws this error:
1119: Access of possibly undefined property closeForm through a reference with static type flash.displayisplayObjectContainer.
I've tried:

How could I write an expression that should call a function of the LOADER swf without having this compile-time error?
I have a custom class called ToolBar which is attached to a library item. The library item has other clips within it and each is an instance of ToolBarButtonA, B, C etc and these all extend the generic class ToolBarButton. If I set an event handler for CLICK within each ToolBarButton to trace 'parent' it comes back [Object ToolBar] which is what I expected but if I try to then call a method through 'parent.methodName()' it fails saying 'call to possibly undefined method'

This class tries to call a function on the main MovieClip and it's not finding it. I've done this in the past without any problems with separate swf files and loaders, and with movieclips in a library. I'm at a loss on how to resolve this. Basically I have 3 swf, parent.swf, child1.swf and child2.swf
parent.swf loads child1.swf
child1.swf loads child2.swf
child2.swf consists of 7 buttons which when click it will 7 different swf files.
My problem is I want to call those buttons name/instance name to my parent so that when click it will load its corresponding swf file.
I have a child movie clip attached to the parent via the flash interface. The child is running a timer via code on its (the child's) timeline. When the timer finishes it needs to trigger a function on the parent's timeline. All the examples show how to trigger a function on the child - that is easy and I have got that working.

i have four buttons from my child.swf where when i click btn1 it will load superchild.swf but i want to load that superchild.swf to my parent.swf, like instead btn1 calls superchild.swf to load, btn1 will call parent.swf then on parent.swf it will distinguish that btn1 was click from child.swf and it will now load superchild.swf.
I'm trying to access the AchievementScreen's textfield from a medal object. Point being to have a mouseover event of the medal, change the content of the textfield shown. I tried a trace first: trace(this.parent.parent.parent.parent.textLineCon tainer); 1119: Access of possibly undefined property textLineContainer through a reference with static type flash.displayisplayObjectContainer. trace(this.parent.parent.parent.parent) shows me it is a AchievementScreen object. textLineContainer is the instance name of the MC nesting the textfield (I actually drew the achievement screen then exported it to actionscript.

I have loaded a movie clip into the "root" from the library using addChild. Inside this loaded movieclip, I need to populate a variable, but this variable is in the main time. The value must be sent when the user click on the clip that has been loaded. I have tried the following using a mouse click event listener.
MovieClip(this.parent).currentScore = 20;
but it won't work.
I have a loaded SWF into a simple "holder" empty movieclip I have on the root stage. Inside that SWF I have two variables that have "stage.stage Height" and "stage.stageWidth" in them. If I leave them on the code and test the root movie I get this error: TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.So basically I can't seem to get the variables to get the parent stage. Anyway to get around that?
View 2 RepliesWhat I am trying to do used to be very simple. I have a variable set in move A. Movie A embeds another move (Movie B) into a movie clip. Is there a simple way to call a varaible from movie a through movie b?If you need a little more detail here is what I am trying to accomplish. Movie a loads a list of information from a xml file and uses that data to set some variables within the content. (ie. based on the data it might caculate that the user listed in the xml file likes golf) Then it sets golf to true in Movie A. My problem is i need this variable throughout several of my movies and I dont want to do the calculation in ever single movie clip. I am sure I am making this much harder than it needs to be.

Clicking each will tell the above ParentClass to transitionForward() or transitionBackward() respectively.[code]One one hand, I feel like the MenuClass is too tightly bound to its parent and is thus less reusable. On the other hand I feel like, in the interest of keeping everything self contained, it's not the ParentClass's responsibility to reach into the MenuClass instance and add event listeners there. This seems like there should be some kind of OOP rule-of-thumb to govern this kind of relationship.Is my MenuClass too tightly bound to its parent? And if so, do you have any suggestions that would loosen that coupling?

Now as you can see, i have tried the trace method, but with no luck. Flash doesn't report any errors regarding the trace method, but does report the two undefined vars (data_history). Ive tried to use the trace method above all the functions, at the top of the script, still the same errors though.
i am trying to make a basic preloader for an AS3 site. I followed the tutorial on this site (Preloading actionscript 3 the easy way) where its similar to AS 2 - create a Preloader movie and load the whole .swf into it.
only problem is i need some variables that i pass to the movie via QueryString parameters in the Object and embed tags. Is there any way to get this in my loaded movie?
i have tried
root.loaderInfo.parameters
and
stage.loaderInfo.parameters
and
parent.loaderInfo.parameters
none of them work. Can i create a variable in the prelaoder and just go "parent.thevariable" ? or does parent even work when something is loaded into a loader?
