I want to create a MovieClip, pass this MovieClip to a function in another class where it will be modified.The problem is, when I pass the MovieClip as a parameter to a function and start making changes, the changes are only made locally. The "copy" of the MovieClip inside the function gets changed, but the "real" MovieClip back in my main game class remains unchanged. Here's the code from my Main class:

Code:
var resourceLoader:ExternalResourceLoader = new ExternalResourceLoader();

ActionScript 2.0 :: Passing Arguments By Reference?

May 12, 2005

Is it possible to pass arguments "by reference" instead of "by value". I know it's possible in almost every programming/scripting language I came across until today, but I didn't find any hint for doing it in Actionscript For those who don't know what "by reference" means: If you want to pass a Number to a function, say

Code:
var mynumber:Number = 5;
calculate(mynumber);
and you change the value of the argument inside the function, e.g.

[code]....

then the call to calculate normally does NOT change the value of mynumber because you have passed mynumber "by value", which means the value of mynumber has been copied to the num argument. This means mynumber is 5 all the time.Now sometimes u want to be changing arguments given to a function inside the function, and this is where u will normally use references. Passing mynumber "by reference" would mean that after calling calculate the value of mynumber will be 6...I know complex Objects like MovieClips are passed by reference. But how to do it with simple DataTypes like Number, Boolean etc.?

Actionscript :: Passing Reference Types By Ref - Flex

Jun 30, 2010

I know that in C# when you pass an object (non primitive) to a method the following is true: A reference to the object is passed Changes made to the object in the method are reflected outside of the method. Also, you can pass a reference to a reference in C# e.g this.changeObject(ref myObject);, in which case: Changes to the object and also to the ref are reflected outside of the method e.g. myObject = new new List(); would change the passed objects referred location. Is this possible to do in Flex/Actionscript - can a ref keyword be used?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Passing Array Variables By Value Not Reference

Dec 11, 2006

It took me hours to figure our why this was returning the wrong value - when assigning one array to another it passes by reference not Value. I need a way to force it to pass by values. e.g. copy the existing array and have the second array reference it, so i am free to modify the first array without changing the values of the second.[code]From the example above You see that in Actionscript when assigning one variable to another it does it my reference not value. So when you chage the value of one array it changes the value of the other automatically.I need to have the "test2" variable reference the "test1" array only by value so if modify "test1" the values of "test2" won't be modified.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Passing Parenting MovieClip Reference To Button Event?

May 10, 2010

I'm trying to reference a movieclip that's been passed through the class primary function (constructor/instance, tried both) but can't get a button event instance to recognize it. Since the button's based around an event, I'm not sure how to pass the reference. I stripped a lot of the code, but left the function sctructure as the button events are tied into a dynamic loop structure, a main reason why I can't move the buttons to a different class.

The example looks something like this:
package {
import flash.display.*;
import flash.text.*;
import flash.utils.*;
import flash.events.*;
[Code] .....

I'm trying to figure out how to get the site_mc reference to the button event so it can trigger other nested movieclips inside it (gallery_mc, etc). If this were AS2 it'd be a piece of cake but now I have all these invisible walls for variable passing.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Passing A Stage Reference To An Object Placed In The Design View?

Nov 28, 2010

In a game me and a friend are creating, the levels are stored in MCs. In the level MCs there are several other MCs that the player should be able to interact with.

This means the objects in the levels need a stage reference. I can place all the objects manually and pass the stage ref in the constructor of the object's class, but this is a pain when the levels are going to be pretty big.

Is it possible to make sure that flash always passes a stage ref to the object even though it's not placed there by code?

Actionscript 3 :: Flash CS5 Reference A Display Object From A Class Other Than The Document Class

Jul 28, 2011

Using Flash CS5 Professional I have created a symbol, dragged it onto the stage, and given it an instance name of GreenLight1. If I want to make this visible from the document class, I can simply do the GreenLight1.visible=true; and poof it's good to go when I test the file. As long as I stay in the document class I am good to go, but now I'm trying to move to another class and hitting ALL kinds of trouble just trying to get Flash to allow me to access this simple object. All I am looking to do is have this GreenLight1 go invisible (visible=false) when a certain condition occurs in this new class and Flash just won't let me access GreenLight1 at all. Things I've tried thus far:

stage is passed to the class and is referenced by _stage and is working just fine when I do _stage.addchild or anything like that. So I have tried "_stage.GreenLight1.visible=false;" and I get "ReferenceError: Error #1069: Property GreenLight1 not found on flash.display.Stage and there is no default value." My document class extends Sprite, so I figured I'd try the root function. So I tried "Sprite(root).GreenLight1.visible=false;" and I get "1119: Access of possibly undefined property GreenLight1 through a reference with static type flash.display:Sprite." I tried to create the Resource class as described therein. To which I came across the same problem that I started with in that it doesn't know what GreenLight1 is to begin with so I got "1120: Access of undefined property GreenLight1." Here is my code for Resource.as (am I supposed to pass something to this class from the document class?)

ActionScript 3.0 :: Passing Data From Document Class To Base Class?

Mar 1, 2011

I created a movieclip with a star. Then, I creates a document class and I named it as Main.as.

In that document class I wrote:
package
{
import flash.display.*;
public class Main extends MovieClip

[Code]....

I´m not posting here all the code, but you can easily see that I´m using x_origin and y_origin variables to keep the original position of the movie clip. I will use them to move the star back to the original position.

The problem is that instead of being 20 and 30 respectively, tracing them I see that they are both ZERO. So when I drop the star, instead of going to x=20,y=30 it moves back to x=0 and y=0. I´ve to get the star position relative to stage, but I can´t find anyway!

ActionScript 3.0 :: Passing A Variable From The Document Class Into A Custom Class?

Dec 28, 2009

I'm trying to create a class which will create a tween for several different instances of an object. I am creating the instances in the Document Class. The trick is, I would like to specify how long each tween will take.

Here's what I have so far:

DOCUMENT CLASS

ActionScript Code:
package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import mcCloud;

[Code].....

As you can see, I have a variable "myTime" which syncs the timer and the tween. This causes to tween to repeat and the clouds to continually scroll across the stage. How can I determine the var myTime at the time I create each instance of the Movie Clip mcCloud?

Flex :: Difference Between Class Reference And Class Instance?

Jun 28, 2010

Given that both of these calls to getQualifiedClassName return the same thing (mx:Label), how would one go about programatically differentiating between an instance of a class and a reference to the class...

var lab1:Label=new Label();
var lab2:Class=Label;
var qcn1:String=getQualifiedClassName(lab1);
var qcn2:String=getQualifiedClassName(lab2);

In other words, how could I know that lab1 is of type Label, while lab2 is type "Class". typeof() simply returns "object" for both... getQualifiedClassName returns "mx.controls::Label" for both...

var B2:MovieClip = new BG();

But because this BG class picture is loader from the internet and the picture is rather big. When I addressed its loading by using progressEvent. The picture is really loaded 2 times. Is there anyway I create B2 based on B1 without using new BG() again? Since it definitely makes a new BG with Loader code inside.

Professional :: Passing URL From FLA To Class

Jul 24, 2010

I have a class that works with an external swf with play, pause and slider. Now that I have all that working, I'd like to be able to pass the URL of the external SWF to the class from the main fla AS. I managed to use a 'set' inside the class to retrieve the name, but it apparently doesn't trigger until after the external SWF gets loaded.

Code snippets follow:
CntlClass:
public var loader:Loader;
private var _urlName:String;
public function CntlClass() {
loader = new Loader();
loader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, movieLoaded);
loader.load(new URLRequest(_urlName));
public function set urlName(value:String):void {
_urlName = value;
}

Main FLA file - other than a controller (cntl_mc) containing a play button, a pause button, and a slider, the only thing in the FLA file is this code in the first frame:
cntl_mc.urlName = "extswf.swf";

function init(xmlString:String):void {

[Code].....

how can i put three customer mc into the for loop? Do I put it in an array?

Second, I don't want it to be put randomly on the stage but only on the right corner of the stage. Is that mean, I put a precise coordinate for the customers mc?
