I am creating a simple application and wanted to use a function to match any given regular expression to any given string, so I created the following function:
PHP Code:
function validateStr(regexp:RegExp, strVal:String):Boolean{
if(regexp.exec(strVal)==null)
return false;
else
return true;
}
But I was wondering, can't I simply replace it with
PHP Code:
function validateStr(regexp:RegExp, strVal:String):Boolean{
return regexp.test(strVal);
}
I am relatively new to ActionScript, so I do not know if both would present the same behavior.

I'm trying to find the number of newlines in a string using the Actionscript 3.0 RegExp engine. Using the string.match function and RegExp(" ","g") does not find the newlines in a string which contains newlines. Is there something I need to add to the pattern or something else that I am missing?

I am using RegExp to search for character sequences within strings. I was wondering if/what is the proper way to use a string stored in a variable as a regular expression. For example: [code]I'll have to use another string manipulation tool to search for the sequence.

I want the user to input a regular expression, which is then used.
I'm using following at the moment.
PHP Code:
var filterEx = new RegExp(filterTxt.text.split("/")[1], filterTxt.text.split("/")[2]);
filterTxt is a textbox, when traceing the pattern is seemingly correct, but i.e.:

var patrn:RegExp = new RegExp("\bit's\b");
var str:String = "Heres my problem in it and it's so help me guys.";
trace(patrn.exec(str)); //result is null
My problem is I can't search the data in a string which has special character like ('/,/.). What regular expression string is capable solving my problem?

I'm designing a maze type of game. The character can only walk on a line. I'm trying to test if thecharacter is on the line (land). If he isn't on the line, he isn't supposed to move (i.e. disable the arrows that control him). The easiest way I thought to test this, is to test the color the character is on. (The line is "66CC00" and the rest is "999999").My code:
HTML Code:
var land:Boolean = false;
var bmp:BitmapData = new BitmapData(this.width, this.height, false);
[code].....

I've got some text coming in from a database. I get:
' " " instead of single and double quotes.
I'm not sure that all fonts even support left and right double quotation marks (?).
at any rate... is there a relatively simple way to resolve this? maybe scanning the strings for the character entities and replacing them with single or double quotes?
does anyone know if Flash can recognize the ASCII entity number (e.g. ') more readily than the ASCII entity name (e.g. &rsquo?? That may be a moot point as i would have to somehow convert/replace with the entity number anyways..

What I am after, is taking a string, then taking each character in that string and making it a variable, then displaying each character by itself. My problem is figuring that out. I thought I would try using a for loop and creating each character variable like that, but it doesn't work. I doesn't display anything. Here is my code so far, it seems like the closest thing I've gotten to:
for (var i:Number=1; i<=myString.length; i++) var letNum:String = myString.charAt(i); var let:String = letNum;
}

I need to strip a string from another and get the remnants. The string I need to strip is a Twitter username, so it can be variable length, but always starts with an '@' and can only contain alphanumeric characters or underscores.
For example, the original string might be "@username: tweeting about stuff" and I need to get out of that ": tweeting about stuff".
