how to take what a user inputs into a s:TextInput and use that as a variable in a JSON data request? Basically, I want to have a user enter a search term, like "math" and then have that placed into a variable so I can use it in a JSON request. Something like public var q:String, except that my search box (and hence user input) is on another "view" of the application. I've just started with Flex Mobile applications and I might be way out of my league.
View 1 RepliesI have a string of text, but within this text I want to input a variable at a specific portion of the text. Now this string of text is taken from an XML file. So the XML file would look like this for example:

The <desc> is an example of a way I tried to make it work. What I want to happen is when I display the desc in my flash file, it inputs the alias (which in the xml is the name) of the item. In PHP this could be doing using EVAL() but I notice the support for that type of function is removed in AS3.
I want to be able to do site specific searches for a online group on Black Planet but they have so many restrictions on coding my only option is to use Flash. I tried some of the search box stuff on this site but they all seem to just do a web search, not site specific searches. I would like to have something that would search the group threads only. I call this data and get it back in
getRecords.lastResult
To access John's opinion, I could use:
getRecords.lastResult[1].opinion
But that's only because I know that John is the second record (record 1), but this may change. So the right way is to search through the results to first find the record index for John, then access his opinion.
I need some sort of a loop? Is there an easier way to search for John directly without a loop?

But what I want to do with getColorBoundsRect is:
- Having only one source to detect the color "WHITE". But having multiple "getColorBoundsRect" detecting white on that ONE source but on DIFFERENT regions.
Lets say this M1(colorboundsrect) will only detect the first part of the source) and M2 will be detecting on another region of SAME source.

my objective is:
1.Read in a text file. e.g containing text like this, teacher/student/1/sn/2/3/4/5/9/f/tn/02/
2.pass it to a string.
3.then beable to extract different parts of the string and place them in different arrays.
The bit I dont know how to do is the extracting specific parts of the string? Is it possible to search for / and to treat what comes after it as a specific peice of information until the next / is read? Or perhaps there is a more efficient approach?

I am trying to write a function that receives a string variable (user input)and searches for that string in the array. for that i tried to use "ArrayName.indexOf(input_variable)" but this always returns -1 even if the string which the variable holds is in the Array.

in a way its similar to what you do within a browser search or pdf search where after typing your search term they highlight all occurrences of this search term within the webpage / pdf document

I have included a search field, such that when I enter a term in the search field, a function loops through the array of terms and if the string I entered in the search field matches an item in the array, Flash traces out "match" (in this early part of coding).Here is my problem: If one of the terms in the glossary is "India Pale Ale", with capital letters, then a search on "india pale ale" turns up no matches.How do I remove case sensitivity in this scenario?
