Aug 28, 2009I have been a desktop developer for a few years mostly doing object oriented stuff. I am trying to branch out into web development, and as a hobby project trying to put a web application together. I have been reading quite alot of information, but I still can't seem to decide on the path to take and would really like some advice. Basically, I want to build something like this:

But so far it is of little use as I am trying to grasp Javascript. I have been using visual studio for that, is that a good IDE for this tye of thing or should I try expression blend? Jpolite seems to do everything with javascript, which seems kind of cool, but I if I want to make a chart inside a widget that connects to a database, do I need something more? Is this where ASP.NET comes in? I am familiar with .NET, but if I use ASP.NET for my website, do I have to host it on IIS and windows server as opposed to Apache since mono is still being ironed out? Because that would cost more, so would PHP be a better choice?Also, for charting these guys as well as google seem to use flex: http:[url]....I have found this: http:[url].....
Would that be sufficient to implement something like google fiance purely in javascript or is there a good reason they use flex?

Dec 2, 2010I'm developing a Rich Internet Application. So far, I have been working on the database and middle-tier .Net for the application. I'm now starting to work on the front-end UI and was planning to use Silverlight, which I'm currently learning. However, based on recent news it looks like Silverlight might be a bad choice for a long-term application.
The application will be a complex user-interface based around social networking, but will involve a lot of animated elements, funky UI pieces and video/audio. what is the best technology to 'buy into' for this, given that it needs to be backed by a .Net 3-tier system?

Using a Flex TextEditArea, I can paste richly formatted text within Flash itself, but if I try to paste from an external source (say web page, microsoft word, etc) it comes in as plain text. Same for the reverse: if I copy rich text from within Flash, and paste to an external source, it goes out as plain text.

Sep 10, 2010I've been thinking about flash and html5 and though each of them can draw circles, rectangles, curves, and do things with images, doesn't it really come down to the artwork? Game play aside (I know ugly games can be fun), all the talk about which looks best canvas or flash or something else, kind of moot? Don't the great games, graphically speaking, have great artwork and modeling so that as long as the engine can handle it, the programming anything other than events associated with those models and artwork doesn't matter? I'm watching my kid play Frontiersville on Facebook and I'm thinking, I could program those events but it's the artwork that's grabbing people and good gameplay keeps them. In the end does the platform really matter for games?

RichTextEditor does not fit my needs sine it has multiple controls to allow user to format text and no way to disable them (?).

Jun 22, 2006Firstly, I am using a TextField object of type input as the text input area of the text editor. So I am wondering, in your opinion, what would work best for formatting the text in this field?[code]...
Remember the text will always be changing at the user's whim in the movie, and I am looking for simplicity in applying certain styles to only selected portions of the input text and also setting styles for all future text that is input beyond what is already input (Could be a different style than that of the text already input)
Secondly, I am having a little trouble with the TextFormat Object option. I have a textfield, and a toolbar movieclip (with buttons such as bold, underline, italics, etc) on my stage. I am writing an actionscript class for the toolbar. I want to be able to capture the start index and end index of highlighted text in the textbox, so that say when I press the bold button, the text is bolded or unbolded. I have tried using Selection.getStartIndex() and Selection.getEndIndex() but they have not yet worked for me, as the selection loses focus when I click on the toolbar in the movie. I was hoping there was some sort of onHighlightText handler for the Selection class, so that I can capture the start and end indices whenever text is highlighted. However, there appears to be nothing with that functionality.

Most of my confusion is coming from my lack of knowledge on the best way to strucutre the classes that control the games flow.For example, what would be the best way to change the game state from the main menu, to the in game state, WITH VISUAL TRANSITION INCLUDED?
The way I'm thinking of doing it now is adding event listeners to buttons, which remove the main menu MC and add a transition MC. Then I add an event listener to the transition MC to watch for the frame label "end of transition". This removes the transition MC and adds the GameContainer MC.

Mar 21, 2012I'm having trouble with building iOS applications in flash. I just bought an iPad and want to start building apps for it. I hav done simple apps for iPhone before but nothing too fancy. The problem is, I can build it and compile it fine but when I try to install on my device it comes up with the error saying:
"ITunes: 'APPNAME' failed to install." I can compile it as an iPhone app and it works fine. I'm pretty sure I've got my provisioning right because I have both my iPhone and iPad devices added. Anyone got any ideas of why my apps only work while I compile them as iPhone apps?

May 14, 2011When I'm making projects with Flex (or Flash Builer) the end result usually performs much better than a similar level project made with the Flash authoring tool. I know Flash IDE is rather for animations and design heavy works so you can't really compare these 2 tools, but this question is bugging me for a long time.If apps made with Flex (or Flash Builder) are really faster and less CPU intensive - why is that?
