how would the 3-tier architecture be applied in a Rich Internet Application?I thougt that flex was presentation, .net web services where busines and informix was data. But then when I started I feel that I must be wrong.

I am trying to branch out into web development, and as a hobby project trying to put a web application together. I have been reading quite alot of information, but I still can't seem to decide on the path to take and would really like some advice. Basically, I want to build something like this:

But so far it is of little use as I am trying to grasp Javascript. I have been using visual studio for that, is that a good IDE for this tye of thing or should I try expression blend? Jpolite seems to do everything with javascript, which seems kind of cool, but I if I want to make a chart inside a widget that connects to a database, do I need something more? Is this where ASP.NET comes in? I am familiar with .NET, but if I use ASP.NET for my website, do I have to host it on IIS and windows server as opposed to Apache since mono is still being ironed out? Because that would cost more, so would PHP be a better choice?Also, for charting these guys as well as google seem to use flex: http:[url]....I have found this: http:[url].....
Would that be sufficient to implement something like google fiance purely in javascript or is there a good reason they use flex?
I'm developing a Rich Internet Application. So far, I have been working on the database and middle-tier .Net for the application. I'm now starting to work on the front-end UI and was planning to use Silverlight, which I'm currently learning. However, based on recent news it looks like Silverlight might be a bad choice for a long-term application.
The application will be a complex user-interface based around social networking, but will involve a lot of animated elements, funky UI pieces and video/audio. what is the best technology to 'buy into' for this, given that it needs to be backed by a .Net 3-tier system?

View 7 RepliesI developing an AIR application in Flex that would be dealing with playing different SWFs. I am finding some issues as these SWFs that I am playing are heavy. I find that the animation is not smooth and is causing the graph of CPU usage to go high (my be because single thread architecture of Flex). I am therefore planning to have a multi process architecture for my application. Something like Google Chrome. I have one main application as one process and other SWFs would be playing in separate process but should be seen inside the main application window. How to make it possible in Flex?

Currently, I'm looking into application frameworks to build upon and I'm torn between pureMVC and Swiz. I LOVE swiz for its simplicity and how it just gives you a way to hook things up and then apply your own patterns. From a flex-only perspective, this is my 1st choice. But, PureMVC is platform-independent and has already been ported over to most of the platforms that are mentioned above. How valuable is this portability? Will it really make our lives significantly easier when it comes to porting and developing/maintaining multiple applications? If so, then it seems like PureMVC is the way to go.
Alternatively, since Silverlight has the most definite business case for porting of our application, maybe we could port Swiz to Silverlight? I'm not too familiar with which AS3 language and Flex framework features Swiz depends on and whether they are available in C#/Silvelright.
I started a project a while back using the following architecture from Adobe Developer Article talking about Creating marketing platforms in Flex. I did my first set of coding locally forgetting that my server did not handle Tomcat. So I said okay, and cut some corners and then some other limitation came up and I cut some more corners. Eventually for a good week or two, it was trying to get the project working with making the ends meet. Layers started to merge.
In the end I used a
PureMVC (Presentation/Client) -> ZendAMF (Communication) -> MySql (Data) Layout.
It worked but I never felt as though I had some layer just to take care of all the SQL calls to the data.It just felt hacked together
So should I keep the above setup and just start from the presentation layer and move downwards like they said in the article or is there a better layering (based on a hosting plan that does not handle Java) I could accomplish ?

I have been asked to design an LCD wall application for a display like the one in this ad. Requirements are that the wall can display full screen video or partition the wall in different sections to display multiple video or images and video. I would like to understand what platform can be used to drive such beasts (what OS? what video card?). I wonder what software platform can drive multimedia on such a scale. Html5 + JavaScript would be OK on a single monitor, but on that scale would it slow down? Flash also is an interesting platform, as it is Air, but, once again, can it scale like that?
I am also considering the server architecture that is needed to drive a set of walls in the same location and the slideshow designer to create storyboards, but this is dependent on what client architecture will be embraced.
I have a flex application that when i update on the server i can see the changes in both firefox and and chrome but I.E continues to show the application before the change... Its as if I.E had the application Cashed somewhere. I dont understand where it could be holding it. I have tried clearing my cookies and i still get the same view before my changes. Has anyone else had this problem before with Internet Explorer?

So, which one of these framework has a better integration with Flex? View 2 RepliesI'm trying to load an XML file from the internet in a CD-ROM flash application and seem to be getting nowhere. The XML object needs to retrieve the results of a PHP script with 2 variables. The first being T (territory), and the second TYPE (type). The TYPE variable is currently fixed. In this situation, we will consider its value: 'bsc'. I have tried an on(change) handler on the ComboBox, and gotten it to at least produce the correct URL with both GET variables, but the XML object refuses to load.
I have tried using trace() outputs, the debugger, and every permutation of my code I can think of ... but with no results. I do know that my PHP code is working properly, and IS generating the output I exactly expect. What am I doing wrong, is there an access restriction between a local Flash file and the internet?

Is it possible to capture rich text when pasting into Flash? Using a Flex TextEditArea, I can paste richly formatted text within Flash itself, but if I try to paste from an external source (say web page, microsoft word, etc) it comes in as plain text. Same for the reverse: if I copy rich text from within Flash, and paste to an external source, it goes out as plain text.

I'm just hoping for some help with rebuilding the architecture. Here's the outline of my application:
Level1) MainView has a column of 5 buttons that when clicked lead to View1, View2, View3, View4 or View5.
Level2) Each of these views is the same: a list, but each is populated with different data. Selecting an item brings the user to another set of views SubView1 - 20. that each are again populated with a list.
Level3) However, any selection made on a List in a SubView leads to a view that is always the same for all selection paths - but is populated with different data. Basically a button, another list, a text input and a textarea.
From what I gather, I should be able to use a lot less files and achieve something of the same result:The model being a single class for data? The controller being a class or that controls the business logic, and a view that calls the controller?

View 3 RepliesI've got a Flex 3 website. I set-up adBrite in an iFrame to serve ads, and it works fine. I've got 2 ad zones in 2 iFrames. My problem is that as Flex has a "pageless" architecture, I only get credit for one hit even if the user clicks every button on the site. In short, I get one pageview instead of several. adBrite said that if I can figure out a way to refresh the ads when the user selects a new item in my navigation menu, they're cool with it. They suggested just refreshing the whole app.

When i come up with Modules based Architecture, it seems to be good but i doubt it should not end up with tight coupling and unwanted issues which may break the head later to solve.

View 2 RepliesI've an Flex actionscript 3 schedule reminding app which talks to a web-service through the internet over wifi. The problem is the wifi connection is unreliable and there are frequent dropouts. The schedule which the app reminds doesn't change very frequently. So instead of calling the web-service for finding the schedule every day/hour the app can store the data locally. Also, if the user updates the schedule on the app, the web-service is updated that the task on the schedule is complete. This data can also be stored locally so that when the user uses the app next time and there is an internet connection, the app can update the web-service.
