Flex :: Using 9-Slice Scaling With Images Loaded At Runtime?
Nov 8, 2010
Is there a way to use 9-slice scaling with images loaded at runtime? To clarify, let's say that I build an application that lets a user skin a button with whatever image they want. This would be an image that's not embedded with the swf. Is there a way to set that runtime image as a background and use 9-scaling?

I've made a rounded rectangle with a gradient fill and another rounded rectangle over it with a transparency to create kind of a glossy effect. Both objects are part of a symbol in the library of the FLA file. Then, I activated the checkbox to create a scale-9 grid, and the Export for Actionscript checkbox in order to add this symbol from AS3. Next I made sure that every rounded corner was completely included in the slices on the edges of the grid. Well, no matter what, the object is scaled as a normal graph: the rounded corners appear bigger and deformed.

It seems 9-slice scaling in Flash CS5 is a little half-baked. If you create a symbol containing text and vector graphics, only the vector graphics is scaled according to the 9-slice scaling contract. For example, consider the following symbol:
Sure, the vector graphics are scaled according to the 9-slice contract, but what are we supposed to do about text? And just in case you're thinking "convert the text to vectors/raster"... unfortunately no... I don't have the option of converting the text to a set of vectors or a raster because its content will have to be dynamic.

I have a simple graphic, a rectangle with 3 rounded corners with 9-slice scaling applied. When I scale it non-proportionally, the round corners keep their shape as expected. BUT if I then rotate it the round corners lose their shape and become ellipticaly distorted! If I rotate first and then scale the same thing happens.

I'm making window component on Flash Professional CS4 and now I have 1 problem. At the top of window is dynamic textfield for title. When I scale window text is also scaling. So is there any way to make textfield fixed in same position and same size? 9-slice scaling is enabled.

I have a grid with 17 columns and populating it with images through XML. I would like to scale the images on Mouse over. I can get this to work but the problem is that some of the images when scaled are below the surrounding images. I thought maybe setChildIndex, but perhaps I was not implementing it correctly.

I have used a skin for scrollbar thumb whose PNG image size is 14x21 but which will be scaled vertically between its present height and extended height 498px. I have been trying to understand the 9 slice scaling parameters to assign to the thumb image so that it does not distort but I'm unable to achieve that. The CSS which has come closest to least distortion is follwing (though UI view of this is also not acceptable) is this:
thumb-skin: Embed(source="assets/images/scroll_thumb.png",scaleGridLeft="1", scaleGridTop="4", scaleGridRight="13", scaleGridBottom="17");
Though the thumb looks fine with height 498px but the three horizontal lines in middle of the thumb.PNG become rectangles. I tried many combinations with these parameters and read a couple of blogs etc but cant get to the solution.

I'm working on a Flash application that has thumbnails and fullsize versions of an image. The steps I'm taking:
- import the image at runtime, and attach to a movieclip (we'll call it polaroid, since that's what I'm calling it).
- resize polaroid via polaroid._width=3; polarois._height=3; to get my thumb
The image quality is OK for pictures, but it's also fairly important that text not look too pixelated. Is there anything relatively simple (i.e. not too taxing on RAM) I can do here? Even a blurring layer would do the job, if there is any such thing.

Im building a site for a photographer, all images are xml driven.. When a thumb is clicked the full size image is loaded into an empty movie clip.
I am after a similar effect as seen here..[URL] If you resize the window the image resizes to scale...
I have managed to align the rest of the movieCLips to the stage when it is resized in its right positions just can't get the image to resize!.

I am having a problem where, when I scale an SVG in flex, it clips a part of the image, as shown below (the bottom right is clipped off, it should be rounded, like the top left)
Here is my code:

1: I have a pie chart which takes values from xml and as per the xml data draw pie chart.
2: I need to add images to some or all pie slices.
3: If I am going clockwise direction and I have reached slice number 3 ,then the image to be added to that slice have similar orientation to that pie slice.
4: I have loaded the pie images and made its bitmaps and then added it to some array say pieBitmapArr.
5: Now I need to add this bitmaps to individual pies.
6: Further the overall dimension of pie image and pie drawn doesn't match.
7: And when I use addChild method to individual slice ,all the picture arrange themselves at the top left i.e. 0,0 position of the stage.
8: I want the image to exaclty fit on pie drawn but I am not able to do it.
9: Further I have used slice.graphics.beginBitmapFill(bitmapData) but also it doesn't yield anything,just blank pie.

in datagrid I have an ItemRenderer (which extends UIComponent) which loads images based on a data value, eg:
_img.source = "assets/images/flags/" + value[dglistData.dataField] + ".gif";
When I run my application the images (flags) are appearing in the ItemRenderer. When I build and deploy the application into BlazeDS as an SWF file - the images do not appear. Instead there is the standard "missing icon" link that appears in Internet explorer.
As far as I can tell, my ANT build script includes the above directory "assets/images/flags/" and all the images into the SWF file.

I'm trying to load a swf compiled by the Flex SDK into a swf exported by the Flash IDE and instantiate the assets by way of getDefinition(). Normally this works fine with assets exported from the Flash IDE then loaded into another swf also from Flash IDE.This is how I could normally do this using only the Flash IDE:Loader - > Using same ApplicationDomain - > getDefinition(class)Now, using the 'Test.as' compiled from Flex SDK using the [Embed] metadata tag:Loader - > Using same ApplicationDomain - > getDefinition("Test_" + class)The problem is I'd rather not have to keep track of the asset libraries loaded to prefix the class name I'd like to get (('Test_" + class) vs (class)). Is there any way of doing this without referencing the library the class is being pulled from or without accessing the original loader? This way I don't need to know which swf the asset is coming from, just the class name that I could instantiate from the current ApplicaitonDomain.

I want to load my styles (in swf format) at run time for my flex mobile application. For that requirement, I have compiled my css files into swf format and I loaded for my application using "StyleManager.loadStyleDeclarations("style.swf");". I get my styles for application when I run it on my desktop, but after building my files into apk format, I couldn't get the styles applied for my application in device. When I debug my application from my android device, I got the following error message.

I am creating a program where a change in a value causes the color of a pie slice in an mx:PieChart to change dynamically.the code that is supposed to change the color is similar to this:(pieChart.pieChartSeries.items[i] as PieSeriesItem).fill = new mx.graphics.SolidColor(0,0.2); // black, almost opaquetracing out the results of this appears to apply the color to the particular PieSeriesItem, but the color does not change visually. I checked the AS reference and the fill property is of type iFill and should accept a solidColor instance. (note: I have also tried 0x000000 as a valid color, the first argument of SolidColor takes an uint)edit] Since I posted the question originally, I've added a few changes to clarify the question. am actually using an MXML component that extends < mx:PieChart > . Originally I was trying to set the color as listed above within an event handler in the main application. What I have done since then was invoke a method in my extended PieChart component, like so:
(in main applicaion)
private function someEventHandler(evt:someEvent):void{
pieChart.setPieSliceColor((pieChart.pieChartSeries.items[i] as PieSeriesItem));

I have an interesting issue, I am trying to load 12 images into their own "Loader" with Scale content set to "true" so they scale down a bit. If I run this in Flash it works great, the 12 images show up fine inside the loader. If I then load it to a website and view it with FF it works fine, however, if i load up IE one or two of them will be fine but the others will be huge, basically not scaling to fit. By Loader, I mean the component loader. I'm sure I'm not the first person to have this issue, my first thought was they are not loading 100% before Flash is trying to scale the content? If that's the issue, how do I preload them?

I build a project with Flash Builder. I copied everything from the "bin-debug" directory to a server (including all images we use which are under /assets).
After I have updated the project, and a few images, i recopy the primary .SWF file (Main.swf) and everything under assets up to the server again. Unfortunately, when I run the application, I am clearly running all of the updated code but the images have no updated.
The new SWF was definitely copied up as well as the new images (I can say that with 100% certainty), and additionally, I cleared my Flash Cache, so that's most likely not the problem either.

I have a problem where my images are not fully displaying their dimensions (cannot see the whole image). How can I have the image being loaded scale to the properties of the holder? Would the whole image show properly, if I were to make the images the same size as the holder via photoshop?
function largeImageLoaded (e:Event):void {
holder.addChild(loader); // here
loader.alpha = 0;
TweenMax.to(loader, 1, {alpha:1, ease:Sine.easeIn});
TweenMax.to(loader, 2, {colorMatrixFilter:{amount:3,
brightness:1.5, saturation:1.2, hue:10}});
}
I assumed, that once you've brought in the image it would scale automatically? I am loading these via XML. So now, I will need a way to scale each of the loaded images to match that of the holder.

I have a Movieclip containing five images in a row. I have seven images inside a mc next to eachother like a T (Five across and three down) with one image being the center image. The images are under a mask an then the images tween on the X and Y but obviously only the masked part of the image is visible. The mask is 1280x649 and I was wondering how to proportionally scale only the masked area to full screen. I have the following code which works perfectly on a single image inside a mc but how do I do now?
Code:
stage.align = "TL";
stage.scaleMode = "noScale";
var picHeight = pic.height / pic.width;
var picWidth = pic.width / pic.height;

I have a few 180 panoramic images in pan.xml and firstly I want to load the first image (width=2737) onto stage, then adjust its size (according to the stage size) with adjustScale function and finally tween it with slidePanorama function. The problem is that first image tweens to the initial position (x=-2737/2) and not to the new position (-scaled width/2), so there's some empty space left on the right of the screen... I tried putting that adjustScale function everywhere, it doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong? The second thing I want to do is to be able to navigate between other panoramas e.g. clicked on a button, load another panorama and repeat the same process as explained above..
ActionScript Code:
private var imgNum:Number = 0;
private function createP():void {
imgData = panXML.item[imgNum].imgURL;

I only recently switched to AS3 from 2 and I'm sure there are concepts. When I load a grid of images and scale and center them, why does this work locally but not when I upload it to a server? These images do not scale or center online, they just position themselves at top left at full size. Here's the portion of my code that centers the image when loading of image is 'done.'
ActionScript Code:
function thdone(e:Event):void {
if(e.currentTarget.width > e.currentTarget.height){
scaleFactor = (120/e.currentTarget.height);
} else {
scaleFactor = (120/e.currentTarget.width);

scaling image for an image gallery project I am creating. I am adding each image inside a SQUARE Movieclip of their own so I can position them nicely on stage. As not all images are exactly square, there are always vacant gaps. What I want to achieve is to scale the image proportionally so that the smallest dimension of the image ( width or height ) will equal the same dimension of the square Movieclip, though anything that overflows the MovieClip is not visible.
