Performance :: Multiple Remote Objects - Best Practices
Oct 3, 2011
I have an application with about 20 models and controllers and am not using any particular framework. What is the best practice for using multiple remote objects in Flex performance-wise?
1) Method 1 - One per Component - Each component instantiates a RemoteObject for itself
2) Method 2 - Multiple in Application Root - Each controller is handled by a RemoteObject in the root
3) Method 3 - One in Application Root - Combine all controllers into one class and handle them with one RemoteObject
I'm guessing 3 will have the best performance but will be too messy to maintain and 1 would be the cleanest but would take a performance hit.

I'm devloping some library classes for flocking/steering behaviours on large numbers of objects (2000+). I'm finding that at < 500 instances, performance is reasonable. As the numbers increase, framerate bogs down.
I've seen remarkable performance with libraries such as Flint or Box2D with ridiculous #'s of particles / objects, so it should be possible to optimize / refactor my code to be a bit better.
I'm aware of the basic optimizations, such as bitwise operations and optimized for loops. Are there any more fundamental approaches I should be considering? For example, currently each instance is a vector-based MovieClip. Would working with BitmapData be more efficient?

I have a question about how best to remove display objects.removeChild(object);Given that there are no other reference to this object, does using removeChild alone make the object eligible for garbage collection, or does it also need to be given a null value as well?[code]In both these cases, I get the classic 1009 error. That leads me to believe that if you use removeChild, you don't also need to give the object a null value.?url...

I have 500 small objects, I would like for them each to rotate (spin) constantly, I have seen a few methods for doing this, but what would be the best way to do this so performance doesn't slow down?

So for my current project I am to handle A LOT of objects on the screen. Which made me wonder what approach I would go about the ENTER_FRAME event.I have 2 samples below, one where my BulletControl object calls on every bullet object's 'FrameFunc()' in its own ENTER_FRAME event with a for loop.The other sample every object has its very own ENTER_FRAME, so it works independently.
[code]....
Also for each burst of bullets I create about 50 objects or so; a lot of object instantiation is never good with such a short interval which makes me wonder if the garbage collector has a hard time keeping up.

I was wondering if addChildAt is slower than addChild, and if so, how bad it is. I want to add objects at runtime, constantly, but they must be behind the player, so I'd use addChildAt to index 0, I figured. However, would this damage my performance? It's for my scrolling platform engine, I want buildings in the 'background' only on the display list when they actually can be seen (code for this is working fine, runs at about 160 FPS last time I checked).
So, should I look into another solution? The only other solution I know of is to have a second 'layer' sprite in the engine, but since it's scrolling, I'd have to scroll 2 sprites all the time. Don't know the best thing to do here

I am making a flex application with .NET at back end (connection using WebORB and remote objects). I have five drop-down boxes in Flex component, each having unique values from different tables (e.g. city name, county name, user name, etc.).On page load (or can say creation create) I need to display these values so that users can select from the list. I was trying to get data using five remote objects (one for each drop down box.). I am wondering if there is way to get all data in one remote call.

I have 2 questions about remote shared objects in Flex/ActionScript3:1) If I connect to a remote shared objects, but do not handle the SYNC event, will the shared object still receive data from the server? ie. will the server still broadcast data to this client ? This is what I expect

I have the following application in flex. I want to call two different remote objects in parallel.
[Code]...
Now what the methods do is to print sth. when they are called, then wait 8 secs and print sth. after that. When clicking each button seperatly, it works, both methods are started in parallel. However, calling both method the same time, leaves one service to wait with its call while until the other is executing. How can I avoid that?

I'm planning on building a Flex based multiplayer game, and I'm researching what will be required for the server end. I have PHP experience, so I started looking at ZendAMF.
Now in this game, I'll need the concept of rooms, and real time updates to clients in those rooms, so it looks like I'll be using remote shared objects (correct, yes?). I'm not seeing where ZendAMF can support this.It seems to indicate that ZendAMF isn't going to do what I want. WebORB for PHP seems to be the only PHP based solution that does messaging, but on that page it doesn't mention "real-time" next to it like the Java based ones below it do.

I have a program that is decently complicated in one area and the rest is simple. The complicated stuff is data crunching, pretty much. Would I get an increased performance by doing the data crunching in a second app and just having it send the couple bits of info I want from it to my other app that would be the front end of the program? Or is this a dumb idea? I know air doesn't by default multi thread, so I was just trying to think of a "work around."

I have a Flex application which has to be deployed in some server. The typical form of access would be invoking the URL. Should I have multiple instances of the applications running on the same server/ deploying the application in diff servers and using a load balancer for routing? If i must have multiple instances, how to do that? On a given day, the application is expected to get around 2000-3000 hits. What are all the factors to be kept in mind while deployment?

Basically I'm building an image gallery. Rather than thumbnails, it just loads the full size images and masks them, so they can all be scrolled through. (I made an intuative preloader for this). It all works fine. The only problem I see there being is performance, when there's quite a few images.Could anyone suggest a way to reduce the load, and make it a bit more memory friendly? I (stupidly) thought that masked out images wouldn't render. I think I'm wrong though? I thought maybe I could make the images off the screen set to 'visible = false'?

I currently have two connections with two separate streams. They both hit the same fms 3.5 server. One connection transfers live audio and video. The other one is used for remote objects. Sometimes when viewing the audio and video stream with a slower internet connection, the stream for the shared objects disconnects. I think it is a bandwidth issue. Is there any way to set the priority of the streams? I think this should allow me to set a higher priority for the shared object connection so it won't disconnect.

I am working on an Adobe Flex front-end with a Java back-end using JPA for persistence. he protocol I am using is remote objects (AMF) implemented with BlazeDS.I started out with a service-facade and entity DAOs, but without any specific DTOs. The same POJOs, the domain objects, were passed in the service-facade as those used as DTOs passed to the Hibernate DAOs.However, the latest few days I have been thinking whether this is a good approach or not. The latest article on the subject I read was this one:Interesting JPA Pattern blogThe situation:Say I have POJO Book with a unidirection ManyToOne relation with the POJO Category (i.e. each book may only be associated with one category, but the same category may be associated with many books). I see some alternatives:Alternative 1:I expose a method/operation addUpdateBook(Book book). In the implementation of this operation I add/update both the book and the referenced category.

In my Flex app, I use one remote object and multiple destinations. Is that a bad idea? It seems to be working just fine except for the one or two fringe cases:It's bad design, but we use the same method name on two different destinations and they seem to conflict when they're called at the same time. Logging errors show a method assigned to one destination as being associated with another.

I'm on Flash Builder 4.5 and I'm using remote object with amfphp and when I call two method (method1 and method2) at the same time the response of method2 always arrives after method1's response even though method2 is much more faster to return the result.re's the scenario:I set a remote object which refers to a remote php class "Newletter" which contains the sendNewsletter and getProgress methods.Here's the code:-sendNewsletter() reads the email archive and send the newsletter. After each email has sent it writes a log into the database.-getProgress() reads the log wrote by sendNewsletter, counts how many email have been sent, compares it with the total number of the email that have to be sent and return the progress percentageFrom the flex interface the users select a Newsletter to be sent and click on a "send" button which calls a function that calls the sendNewsletter() and then instantiate a loop of calls to getProgress (as you can see when getProgress returns something it calls the setProgress which updates a progress bar and calls getProgress again until the progress percentage reach 100%.
So right after I call sendNewsletter() I call getProgress() on the same remoteClass().sendNewsletter() can take several minutes to complete (in my tests for sending 4 email it takes about 4 seconds so I think that sending thousands of email will take much more!!) and the trouble I'm encountering here is that getProgress() result arrives only after sendNewsletter() concludes its execution while what I would like to achieve is:

I've created a grid of 3D cubes using modulus, and the 3d cubes are were created from the Math and Flash Tutorial, if you are interested it is here.What I am trying to accomplish (and it works, just the performance is lousy). All the cubes in the grid are inactive until the mouse hovers over them, then they start to rotate, and once the mouse moves off them they continue to rotate...
So to create the grid of cubes:
Code:
public function FlowerMenu(){
var rowY:Number = 0;
for (var i:int = 0; i < 190; i++) {
[code]....
So, this works, but after about 4 or 5 cubes have started rotating the performance drops considerably. I can imagine creating that many EventListeners isn't a good idea, but I can't see any other way of doing it.

I want to be able to drag any of the 4 objects onto any of the targets, right now all I can manage is to allow each object drop onto one specific target only.
I thought by calling all my target names by the same instance name eg target_mc that would work but only one target will ever work.

We have a medium size Flex 3.6 application that contains around 20 different page views (managed via a single lazy ViewStack) each having multiple components. Most use custom renderers.All model data is loaded at startup and changes to model instances are communicated via binding and/or collection change events.Once the user has viewed each page at least once, all page views are instantiated and happily listen to update events.Which in effect means that each time a model instance changes, all interested views receive that event and compute derived data or trigger item-renderers.I have tested and confirmed this behaviour in a proof-of-concept application. Even when setting a list to being invisible, it still listens to collection change events and invalidates any renderer affected.What would you do?
