Javascript :: Flex Vs JQuery Vs GWTvs / Closre Vs Cappuccino Vs Plain JS And HTML5?

May 19, 2010

I'm creating my first web application and I'm really confused as to what technology to go for. My application needs to look serious (like an application), it doesn't need many colorful graphical interfaces. It only needs a toolbar, a tab bar, a split panel (preferably 3 columns), an easily-formatable text field, and a status bar. It will connect to a MySQL database through PHP (unless I go for GWT). Users will upload files. My evaluation of the options:

Flex: Probably the easiest to develop but I'm pretty sure my application is something one would use on an iPad and with Flash's future on the iPad still unsure, I don't want to take the risk, otherwise Flex would've been my choice. jQuery: I've heard a lot about it and a lot of people recommend but I don't know how easy it is to use and how customizable the look of my app is. GWT: The problem with GWT is that it doesn't have many widgets. Another problem is that I'm gonna have to host the files in AppEngine's datastore and transfer them back and forth to a web server that will do operations on them (I need to process them) which adds more traffic and slows the process which worsens the user experience. Closure: It has a nice toolbar and a nice text field. I'm not sure how easy it is to use. Plus, I read an article that makes it sound really bad.

Flex :: Can Enterprise Apps Requiring HTML5's New Feature(s) Support Non-HTML5 Browsers

Nov 16, 2011

I'm just trying to understand how once HTML5 enters the picture, the current concerns about browser incompatibility and other issues go away? Wouldn't HTML5 simply add another set of browsers to the large list of current browsers that the application must target?

That is, assuming the enterprise web app requires one of these new HTML5 features (e.g. playing audio and/or video, integrating SVG or vector graphics, etc.). If such a feature isn't critical then graceful degradation may be acceptable and then my question is moot.

But for those apps that require one of these new HTML5 features, are you planning to support older browsers, or expecting it's acceptable to restrict to HTML5 browsers because the enterprise in question has made one of them their new corporate standard (or other scenario, etc.)?

On Firefox, it works fine because it's using the OGG video in its HTML5 video player.Is there a way to resize the Flash video via JavaScript/jQuery to fit the same space as the HTML5 video?

Can A Non-creative Programmer Have A Future In Flash Development

Aug 16, 2009

As an experienced programmer in various environments (Linux,server side web development,etc), I was recently approached with an offer to do some Actionscript development.Somehow, it seems to me that unless one is artistically or visually creative or at least has some visual talent, one's Actionscript programming skills alone will not get you very far in flash development.Can one be a superb flash developer without having to make any artistic decisions, relying on graphic artists to tell you what to do? Or, should I stick to server side coding where I know I can add real value, even excel.

Professional :: AIR For IOS, Getting HTML5 Video To Autoplay In A StageWebView?

Sep 23, 2011

The video performance I get from the built in FLV video is pretty poor. I'm considering using a StageWebView to display a HTML5 page with a standard <video> in it.

The video shows up and (if I enable controls) can be played and it looks great (much better than FLV). The only issue is I cannot find a way to have the video autoplay once the StageWebView is loaded.

I've set the <video .... autoplay> parameter. I've also tried using JavaScript to send a video.play() (after the window load event is complete and the DOM is ready).

I can't wait for AIR3.0 so we can just use StageVideo.. But for now I'm using AIR2.7 via Flash CS5.5 publishing for an iPad2 via AIR for iOS.

Professional :: Animate Image Inside MovieClip Then Duplicate And Swap

Oct 31, 2011

I have 170 images that I need to place on the same place on the left side of the stage and and have them move across the stage one at a time, increase in size and then fade out after 10 sec. The sequence then continues for all 169 images. My initial thoughts are to animate the first image inside a movie clip, duplicate it and swap the image. When I tried this it worked fine until the image had shape tweened to the larger size (at this point the image displays for 10 sec and fades out). At the key frame at this point the image changed back to the original one. What do I need to do to make the new image visible throughout the whole movie clip when I swap the image like this? Is there a better way to produce this type of animation? I am using Flash Professional 8 and quite new to the world of Flash and Action Script.

Professional :: Palette Swap Animation Without Overly Duplicating Symbols?

Jan 10, 2012

This is to be exported into a movie, so not an Actionscript question. I'm making a parody of a fighter-game scenario. One character looks like Subzero and the other like Scorpion. They're the same models but one should be colored differently. They're comprised of symbols such as arms and legs to make a larger overall character animation. There are several animations of them, for kicks, punches, bobbing, etc. Now, I know that if I went in and edited the colors, that all instances would change accordingly. Duplicating the symbol doesn't work because they share the same inner symbols. Is there a method for "deep" duplication? A tint doesn't work because essentially I only want to change the color of some of the components.

Professional :: Convert A JQuery Lightbox Style Gallery Into A Flash XML Based Image Gallery With Categories?

Oct 26, 2010

I've made a gallery slideshow before but wasn't as intuitive looking back at it now and I want to start fresh on this new project. I would like to convert a jQuery lightbox style gallery into a flash XML based AS3 image gallery with categories. I don't want to code the FLA, I want separate AS files.

This is a school project for my website. I would use jQuery and I have more experience with it but this project needs a flash component. I'm just not sure where to start and looking for some advice on how and where I could find resources. I want it to be minimal as I can make it;

- 8 thumbnails to a "page/section" with more flowed into page 2 or 3 etc. (or a srcoller)

- a few buttons for categories

- images fading in full size with a description when hovered over and a close button

- preloader (simple bar)

Esentially something like this > http:[url].........works which is using http:[url].... for the thumbnails. That might be ambitious but I'd suffice with a simple fade effect.I've downloaded some galleries out there but most of the code is messy or outdated.http:[url]... this is alright, but all the code is done in the FLA. I might break it into AS files but it depends.

Jquery :: Ajax - White Screen Of Death Jquery Load() Html File With Swf?

Apr 19, 2011

I've looked high and low for an answer to this and I'm hoping someone has an answer, or at least a tip on how to avoid it.I'm loading a static HTML file into a container via the jQuery load() method. This static HTML file has a script which loads a swf. When I load that particular file, I get the white screen of death (WSOD) and the page explodes and everyone in the room dies a horrible death.I've had this happen also when using the jQuery wrap methods (wrap, wrapOuter, etc.) when a swf is present.It seems manipulating the DOM with a container that has a swf object causes this. Does anyone have a solution or a way that I can prevent it happening?

Jquery :: Get Jquery Working From An Externally Loaded Html Inside A Div?

May 3, 2011

I'm setting up a page that uses a flash menu to load html pages into a div container by the following call:

on (release){
getURL("javascript:getPage('test.html')");
}

The loading works fine, but some of my pages had specific jquery scripts and that's where I've struck out so far. I assumed all I needed to do was transfer the script importations, css stylesheets and the jquery functions to my main document, but it won't work.

I also tried importing the html as a the complete html, which works on it's own, but not when imported into the main document. Most recently I heard I should try shifting the jquery function calls to the end of the loaded document, to after the content, My scripts work, just not when imported, so I suppose my question is how can I make the main- and imported documents play nice with each other? What say you we make this a jump-start tutorial for all us noobs to reference?

Flash - Output The Text For "future" From Function Year()?

Feb 23, 2011

Why does this program always output the text for "future" from function year()? In this case, with b+c equaling 56, var year should fall under (b+c) > 0 && (b+c) < 1000) and return "roman", but it instead returns "future"...I got this to successfully work if I add this:

var period:String = (year(b,c));

and in my body function, make the conditionals check the period. For example

if (period == "future")

but I don't understand why I need to do this. I am returning a string, why do I have to set another variable? There is no compiler errors so clearly its not syntactical?

var a:String = "Tim";
var b:int = 50; //CHANGE TO ANY INT YOU WANT
var c:int = 6; //CHANGE TO ANY INT YOU WANT
var d:String = "Kyle";
var sum:int = b+c;

[code]....
