Actionscript 3 :: Determine If The Class That Will Be Created Is A Children Of Another?

Jan 28, 2011

For this example, I will use 2 classes, Entity and CSpawner. CSpawner is a children of Entity.I want to perform the following condition:if((new CSpawner()) is Entity)It works just like intended.But I want to do this test, without creating a new CSpawner object, something like this:if(CSpawner is Entity)But it doesn't work, because CSpawner is a Class.How do I perform that kind of conditional without creating a new CSpawner object?

Flex :: Change Children Of Dynamic Created States?

Nov 30, 2009

I'm building an Xml-driven application. I create new states in a separate actionscript-class.These states all contain a DataGrid. I can switch the states in the Main.mxml.

But now I would like to access certain children of the DataGrid. In this case I would like to toggle the visibility of GridItems, from a Button in the Main.mxml.

How do I have access and apply this to the already created states ? I tried to create RemoveChilds and override/push it to the state.All I archieved was to remove an entire GridRow at the very last state, but it should be just one GridItem at every state.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Controlling Multiple Children Created In For Loop?

Nov 15, 2011

So I'm working on a Flash version of the old "Robots!" game. In case you're not familiar: the game lays out a number of robots on a grid (number varies by level), and drops the player in the middle. As the player moves around the grid, the robots all move towards the player one grid space per player move. The object is to destroy all the robots by making them run into each other (or the rubble left from previous collisions) without letting a robot run into you.

Anyway, my robot hordes are being created on the stage through a "for" loop, and each icon is a child of variable "evilBot" which references a library item with the class name "enemy."

ActionScript Code:
function placeBots():void{
for (var c = 0; c < numBots; c++){
evilBot = new enemy;

[Code]....

I've run a trace on "evilBot.name" and verified that the children are being given instance names of "evilBot0, evilBot1 ..." and so on. But no matter what I try, I can't issue instructions (regarding movement, orientation, etc) to individual children.

Using a for loop and "this["evilBot" + x]" returns a "term is undefined" error.

If I store the instance names in an array (named "botName") and use "evilBot.name[botName[x]]", I get the error "Property evilBot0 not found on String and there is no default value."

IDE :: Acesssing Derived Class Children (stage Instances) From Base Class?

Jul 16, 2009

I'm slightly new to Flash CS3 + AS3 combo, so its more of a lack of practice question. My question stems from the problem described here http:[url].... . Note, its not the same problem, its a new one.The Problem ,So I have multiple library assets (which are on teh stage) and I want to assign similar functionality to all of them.

Attempt 1: So I create the n assets, create a custom class in AS3, link them to Flash CS3 and obviously enough it gives me the error that multiple assets can't be linked to the same class.Obvious enough to understand (well not completely, because from a programmers background it doesn't make sense).

Attempt 2: Same as attempt 1, but instead of linking all the assets to the same class I make the base class the same class, and let the derived class be dynamically created by Flash on compile time.So the linking works, but the problem is, in my base class I have a method which does something (say an tween) on a child of the library asset. So if the assets on the stage/library are called asset1, asset2, asset3 (same name for asset name, class name, id name), each of them has a sub-movieclip called ... say 'foo'. now if I manually wrote a class for each asset, I could do 'this.foo' to play with the sub-movieclip. However since this functionality is in the parent class, I'm unable to do it.

P.S. If you're form a programming/OOP background, its basically a abstract class problem. My Base class knows how to doSomething(), but it needs aSomething, which is defined in the Derived classes. However I found out that AS3 classes don't support virtual(C++ )/abstract (Java) in the true sense of the word (unless I missed some obvious documentation).

Actionscript 3 :: Determine If Value Is Class Constant?

Mar 10, 2011

i'd like to throw an argument error if a particular function doesn't work without a passed value that also happens to be a public constant of the class containing the function.is there anyway to determine if a class owns a public constant instead of having to iterate thru all of them? something like this:

public static const HALIFAX:String = "halifax";
public static const MONTREAL:String = "montreal";
public static const TORONTO:String = "toronto";[code]....

currently, for this functionality i have to write the city setter function like this:

public function set city(value:String):void

Actionscript 3 :: Determine A Caller's Class?

Apr 21, 2011

since the MXMLC compiler doesn't support mixed access modifiers for setters/getters, i would like to know whether a public setter function is being called from inside or outside of the setter's class. this approach should allow me to maintain a public property but with more security, something like public/private hybrid access. is it possible to use arguments' callee property, or perhaps something else, to determine whether the setter was set internally from the setter's class or if it was set externally?

Flex :: Determine Which Class Has Called A Function?

Apr 16, 2010

I am working on a Flex Front End at the moment, and have been using the Parsley framework for passing messages/events around.

I was wondering if there is a simple way for a function (in this case, an event's constructor) to obtain a reference to the object which called it?

This is to ensure that a certain event that I am defining can only be dispatched by one specified class. My thinking is to check the caller of the constructor somehow, and throw an error if it is not of the correct type.

Flex :: Determine When A Method Or Property Was Added To A Player Or SDK Class?

Sep 11, 2009

I recently found a method (ByteArray.clear()) that FlexBuilder complains is possibly undefined; however, the method is in fact documented in the Flex LiveDocs. It must have been added in a later version of the SDK than I have installed. I'm not asking about this particular method, but I'm giving it as an example of the documentation issue that I'm trying to resolve. My questions are:

How can I determine what version of the SDK or Flash player that a method or property was added in? How can I tell which versions of the SDK are supported on which Flash player versions?

I want to be able to determine from the documentation, instead of compiler or runtime errors, what SDK and Flash player versions are needed to support newly added methods.

With Java I look for the @since javadoc tag when I need to know this, but I can't find an equivalent feature in the Flex docs.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Children Of Main Class Not Showing Up

Jul 23, 2011

Sprites, Shapes and MovieClips added as children of the main class just aren't visible. There's no error message at compiletime, no error message at runtime, everything seems to work perfectly except that the child (and its children, whatever they happen to be) just doesn't manifest on the screen. It might be worth noting that not all DisplayObjects have this problem. Bitmaps and TextFields, for instance, both show up perfectly.

If it matters, I'm running Flash Player 10 on 32-bit Windows Vista, compiling using Flex 4 with a command line instruction of the following form:
"mxmlc.exe" -as3 -static-link-runtime-shared-libraries=true -target-player "10" whatever.as
I've already tried basically all the obvious tests I can think of to narrow down the problem. Aside from the object being invisible and apparently not responding to mouse clicks, everything works exactly as expected.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Create A Custom Class (Testing) That Would Create A Box When An Instance Of The Class Is Created

Aug 29, 2007

I've been playing around with custom classes. My objective was to create a custom class (Testing) that would create a box when an instance of the class is created. I've tried three different approaches, however only (3) seems to be showing up. I'm just curious why (1) or (2) doesn't work?

Also is there a better approach than (3)? Since at the moment it's been created on _root. I hope the box can only be accessible through the instance. Since I'd like to incorporate the whole idea of public, private, encapsulation, etc.

Flash :: Edit Visually Created Class In AS3?

Jul 30, 2011

I have some class that I created visually in Flash Professional CS5 by transferring drawn result into a MovieClip and extorting symbol into AS code. Now, I want to add some properties to the class. To be more specific, I've created Ball class and want to add to it variables that will represent vertical and horizontal speeds. How can I edit the class in order to do it? Also, when I wanted to add some visible external element to the class, at first I decided to add MovieClip property in the code itself, but then recalled method .addChild() that worked perfectly for me. Now, I can't do the same with non-visible properties. So, what is the difference between adding visible elements using .addChild() and adding them in the code itself?

However, my question now is, if i click back button to image 9, it starts loading the image again.So my question is how can i save or reference images that i have loaded already so that i can just call on them within the main application when needed and not start loading again?
