Flex :: Saving And Loading Image To Local SQLite BLOB ?

Sep 8, 2011

I need to be able to save and load images into an SQLite database using Flex 4.5 for a mobile application. The use case is this:

Inside the view there is a spark Image object with a URL as a source

When user clicks button, the Image is saved to an SQLite db inside a BLOB field.

In a separate Image, the source is set to the ByteArray stored in the db.

The biggest question so far is this: where do I get the ByteArray for a loaded Image? I've tried debugging and inspecting Image, BitmapImage, and BitMapData but there's no sign of the byte array.... perhaps it's inside the ContentLoader? But that's null unless I enable caching.

I've done some research and there are no complete examples for how to handle this. I've written a simple View that anyone can copy and paste into a new project. It will compile without errors and can be used for testing. I will update this code as I get the answers I need so that anyone can have a fully working example of this workflow.The only caveat: I used a synchronous connection to the DB to avoid complicating the code with event handlers, I wanted to keep it as simple as possible.I will only mark this question as answered once it is fully functioning both ways.

UPDATE SEPT. 09 2011: The code below is now fully functioning in both directions (save and load). Here are some of the things I've learned: It turns out that the ByteArray of a spark Image can be found inside the LoaderInfo of the image itself. Like this:

image.loaderInfo.bytes

However, trying to set this ByteArray as the source of another image ( image2.source = image1.loaderInfo.bytes) results in this security error: Error #3226: Cannot import a SWF file when LoaderContext.allowCodeImport is false.Which is too bad because it would save so much time and processing power.the workaround is to encode the ByteArray using either a JPEGEncoder or a PNGEncoder. I used the JPEGEncoder which produces much smaller files. Here's how:

var encoder:JPEGEncoder = new JPEGEncoder(75);
var imageByteArray:ByteArray = encoder.encode(imageToSave.bitmapData);

Now the problem is saving these bytes to the DB. Saving them as they are now will not work once we read them out, I'm not sure why. So the solution is to encode them into a base64 string like this:

var baseEncoder:Base64Encoder = new Base64Encoder();
baseEncoder.encodeBytes(imageByteArray);
var encodedBytes:String = baseEncoder.toString();

So now just save that string into the BLOB field and later read it out. However, you have to decode it from a base64 string to a ByteArray like this:

var encodedBytes:String = result.data[0].imagedata;
var baseDecoder:Base64Decoder = new Base64Decoder();
baseDecoder.decode(encodedBytes);
var byteArray:ByteArray = baseDecoder.toByteArray();

Now assign the bytearray as the source of your image and you're done. Simple right?if you find any optimizations or alternative ways to do this.I will respond and keep this code updated if need be.

Can Flash Load Static .JPG Files Without Crossdomain.xml Policies

Dec 7, 2010

I'm doing a Flash Banner for an ADv campaing. Since the max swf file size allowed is very low, I'm trying to load external JPG images from the main server.Reading the crossdomain policies for Flash movies I see that:You cannot load variables or XML data into a Flash movie from another domain.

It's the same with static files as Jpg images?I'm testing the banner with various results: looking in Firebug, images are always loaded, but sometimes they appear, sometimes not, sometimes only the first time (it's a loop). There are no warnings however.

Loading the Banner with the same domain as the static images always works.I also tried to put a crossdomain.xml file on the domain that serves the static images, but problem seems to continue (maybe Flash cache that request somewhere..

Unfortunately, at least via the Graph solution (and I haven't looked too closely at the others), their servers resolve the image url after the request is made, from something more generic like: url...Has anyone found a more dependable means of ensuring that images can be retrieved without security sandbox violations? Or do Facebook maintain a definitive list that developers need to keep an eye on?

Flash App Loading Crossdomain.xml From App Server Fails?

Aug 2, 2011

I'm writing a web application using three tier architecture. I have three Amazon EC2 ubuntu servers. The first server handles the presentation of the application and includes my main flash file. The second EC2 instance represents my application server. It contains the AMFPHP files and corresponding web services. Finally, the third instance handles persistance and is running a MySQL database. Both the presentation and application servers are running an apache web server. I created security groups specific to each tier such that the presentation layer will accept all incoming traffic on port 80 while the application layer will only accept incoming traffic from the presentation server. This should allow anyone to request my web application from the presentation server but prevent anyone from accessing the web services on my application server.My flash application cannot make web service calls to my application server. When a request is sent, I never receive a response from the server and eventually receive a security sandbox error.[code]It seemed odd that I wasn't receiving a response, so I decided to try a couple of things:

1. I connected to my presentation tier via ssh and attempted to use lynx to connect to my application server's gateway.php. I was able to connect without any problems.

2. I used Chrome's developer tools window to observe network traffic when loading my site. I found that it is attempting to load the crossdomain.xml file (which resides in the root of my web server [/var/www] on the application tier) using a GET request; but strangely, it times out and fails. This is where I am confused. How come I can use lynx on the same machine to connect to the web server on the application tier but yet the flash app can't access the same file?

While running some tests, I decided to open up the application server instance's firewall such that it can receive http requests from my IP. As soon as I did this, the application being hosted on the presentation tier immediately began working (Received a response from the web service)! However, this means I would have to force my application tier to accept http requests from the internet in order to work, which is not something I want to do. I don't understand why making this change would allow the application to grab the crossdomain.xml file. If the application server's security group is set to accept incoming http requests from the presentation security group, it should have no problem acquiring the crossdomain. xml file residing in the web server root of the application server right? I've spent more time than I would like looking into this issue. I really would like to setup a three-tier environment for my application in which the flash application will be able to send web service requests to my application layer. The most confusing part about this is the fact that when I add my computer's IP address to the application server's firewall, everything seems to magically work as intended. Please correct me if I am setting my application up in the wrong way. I am basing my architecture off of the following:URL..

Flash :: Network Failures When Loading Crossdomain.xml Policy File?

Sep 13, 2011

I monitor (and log to server) most user errors in our flash game. Quite frequently I see security errors related to trying to make requests to a cross-domain URL (usually the Facebook Graph API). 99% of our players can make these graph API calls with no issues.What I think is going on is that the client makes a request, but fails to load the crossdomain.xml file. I don't quite know how AS3 handles this in the case of a failure to load the crossdomain policy file...will it retry for every URLRequest made until it succeeds in loading it, or does it just give up forever?

Professional :: Modify Or Recompile Flash SWF In Cloud

Mar 30, 2011

Any work flow to allow a Flash swf to be compiled by a web server. I would like to create an app that allows me to inject some code into a swf file and publish the output. Basically the user logs into a website sets up some properties, hits publish, and then downloads the app as a swf file. So the part that is stumping me is that I need one file. Compiling or editing would have to happen on the web server since I need to avoid separate resource or data config type files. The user must be able to download one complete SWF file only.

My thoughts were that maybe... Inject some code or variables into a SWF after it has been compiled from a FLA to SWF? somehow parse and rewrite the swf file on the server. An open source complier that can sit on the web server, or a javascript app that could compile a FLA to SWF? A way to complile a FLA to a SWF by using another Flash SWF? A homebrew web server that runs a command line compiler of the FLA script on demand. HaXe, MTASC, Adobe AIR? Any high level workflow that might work??

Flex Local SQLite BLOB Display?

Jul 29, 2011

I've got 3 columns in an SQLite db I built with Firefox's handy SQLite Manager. So, I created 3 columns, an index/reference that's just an incrementing INTEGER for easy reference, a descriptive title of the image (so it can be searchable later) in a TEXT, and a BLOB type that holds the pngs.

I'm trying to add this in an assets folder into my project (as a pre-populated database) and display the blob images, one at a time, in a window one after the other, scrollable by user. This is where I'm running into problems. Eventually I want to be able to encrypt it and add a search tool, but first things first, and that's displaying an image.

I have spent several hours scouring the web about this topic, but there isn't much help out there: Adobe has tips about using SQLite with AS3 (their reference documents and the support section of their website have some overview articles) but nothing refers to reading blob data in depth.

On this site, I've found some references to Adobe Air looking for extra byte information when reading blobs since they have a different syntax to write to the databases created within the program. See: What is the first bytes in a Blob column SQlite Adobe AIR? Blob Sizeinfo?

ActionScript 2.0 :: How To Accomplish Blob Like Borders Effect

Jan 5, 2004

I was browsing the net and came upon this site, which has a really cool blob-like borders effect. I really wanted to learn how to accomplish this effect, here's what I know as of now:

1. I must have an array of points, connect them using curveTo and fill it. For this I have to use this methods:
createMovieClip, lineStyle, beginFill, moveTo, curveTo, endFill

2. Then I must have a proximity detector for each point, more or less like:
dx = point._x - _xmouse;
dy = point._y - _ymouse;
distance = Math.sqrt(dx*dx + dy*dy);

And if the mouse is too close to the point make it move away with a certain velocity (but only if the mouse is moving, if it is still, just make the blob wobble for a while, using an elasticity effect).
point._vx += point._ax;
point._x += point._vx;

Where the acceleration must be a fraction of the distance we calculated before:
k = .2; // example
point._ax = distance * k;

But we must also have damping so we can have the elastic movement, so:
damp = .9; // example
point._vx += point._ax;
point._vx *= damp;
point._x += point._vx;

3. Finally when the mouse is clicked on a blob we must communicate with the others and make them all wobble, by using LocalConnection. How do I make the array with all the points and access them?; how do I impose the proximity detector into each point and make the curveTo's change?
