Actionscript 3 :: Resources For Learning Event Driven Flash Development?

Feb 20, 2010

What are good books / site where you can learn the best practices for event driven programming in actionscript (3 obviously).

I've got a big project coming up and, to be honest, my flash is usually a big mess of classes and I don't want the the next one to turn into a ball of hair behemoth.

Actionscript 3 :: Test Driven Development In Flash?

I've recently been working on some bigger projects in Flash and would really like to be able to use Test Driven Development but haven't found a great way to do so. Php :: Dead-simple Introduction To TDD (Test Driven Development)

Feb 6, 2010

Even though there are plenty introductions to TDD (even in PHP, my primary programming language now),My friend introduced me TDD a while ago, but I wasn't actually able to understand it - what's the point in writing tests to everything first - even the simplest tasks - when in the end, it looks it's more efficient to test only if something doesn't work, although it might be much harder to locate the bug (this could be solved through VCS, no?).So is there any introduction, with dead-simple examples and arguments behind "pros"?Something like "yeah, it's better, because you have better design - look at this example..."I understand that you create "test" and then the function, that should pass the test. But how you say to language, what results should it have? To me it looks that you do some function... debug it (the same way as you debug in no test driven dev.) and call it test and do it again..Also, is this applicable to MVC approach? Or rather, CodeIgniter Newbie MVC?Read a bunch of posted and googled advices, plans, ways and tutorials. I am still not entirely into TDD - I mostly have pretty good visualisation and I think (hope?) I write pretty maintable code, so i still see it as an extra work...

While the third party swf works fine as a standalone, the embedded version loads just an empty movie.

Web Development :: Web Development - Post Flash Exe To Web?

Aug 26, 2010

I've been given a Flash tutorial to post to the corporate website that is an .exe file with an embedded Flash player. Users will be on IE, so I guess they would get the run/save prompt. I don't like this and I know it generally isn't done, but I need to know if it is OK to just do it. When I try to explain the security issues with executable files, eyes glaze. Is it possible that the users' system admins would be able to block the run prompt and make the user save the file? Could they block that too? The user community is hopeless, so having the embedded Flash player could be a good thing.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Use ADDED_TO_STAGE Event To Load An External Xml Driven Swf Menu?

Feb 7, 2010

well i have a problem to which there are lots of related searches over the net but none could solve it. well the problem is that i have an XML driven carousel menu that needs to be loaded using the preloader. After the load is complete i can find my swf menu's backgound and the static buttons getting loaded but the buttons that should load in the carousel using xml are not present.

I have come across the even ADDED_TO_STAGE to load the swf once it has completed its dynamic loading. But they have used it in the documentation class for thier project. I am not using any separate actionscript file.All my code is written in the 1st frame of my project .... I really need a solution to this problem

Flex :: Superfluous Calls To AddEventListener("event", ThisSpecificFunction) Waste Resources?

Apr 6, 2010

I have ItemRenderers that need to listen for events. When they hear an event (and when data changes), they dispatch an event with their current data value. As item renderers are reused, each of them is going to add its callback in set data(value...)and pass the callback function in the event as well as the current data value. So, the listener of the item renderer's bubbling event will set someEventDispatcher.addEventListener("someEvent", itemRendererEvent.callbackListener). This will happen more than once. Does setting the same event listener on the same event for the same dispatcher waste resources? Does the displatcher see that it already has the listener?

Is there a lack of browser support? Or is this functionality determined by the browser's Flash plugin?

Web Development :: Web Development - Browser Doesn't Load Imagers All At Once?

Jan 12, 2011

If I load a web page full of other files, e.g. images, my browser doesn't load them all at once.I seem to remember reading that IE will only have at most 3 requests open at a time for a page. The rest will be queued.If I have a flash movie on the page which is continually making image requests, how does this affect the maximum number of downloading files in the browser?

Is this browser limit accurate, and is it generally the same across browsers? Does flash share the requests of the browser? If not, does flash have a limit and what is that limit?
For some background, I do have a flash movie that is continually loading files so there is a queue of Loaders waiting to make requests.My idea was that if there was a different request that I needed to be executed straight away I could make it jump the queue by making a javascript call and allowing the browser to make the request instead.

AS3 :: Flash - Obscuring The Loaded Resources?

Sep 11, 2010

This is sort of a two part question. I'm building a flash image viewer to be a portable age-restricted module (violent video games). Basically, it will load any number of images from a CDN and require the user to enter their birthday before viewing it. Simple stuff. The problem is that, per company policy, we can't allow those images to be directly accessible by any means of sniffing (eg, watching your Resources/Net tab in Webkit/Firebug, or watching XHR if we loaded them that way). So, I'd like to get your opinions about the best way to approach this.

At first I thought to have a server-side script that loads the image (eg via PHP) by passing a var that can be decrypted but with a dynamic salt, eg, using a method that is very unlikely to be discovered (for example, having the salt be embedded throughout the string), but that defeats the purpose of the CDN as all requests would be geolocated to the server.

Then I thought that loading the images via sockets would be a good solution, however, I'm having trouble converting the binary image (after removing the response headers) to a Bitmap.Is there a better way to go about this? I know that realistically it's impossible to completely prevent the content from being linked to (eg someone could screenshot the flash) but my goal is just to take steps on our side to prevent that from happening by native means. Below is the socket code (irrelevant parts removed), if that helps any.

package com.std.socket {
import flash.system.Security;
import flash.net.Socket;
import flash.events.*;

[code]....

As I'm writing I'm thinking that in SocketRequest::evt_socketResponse(), the this.sock.readUTFBytes() bit should really be:

this.request.response_parts.push(this.sock.readBytes(this.data, this.data.length, evt.bytesLoaded));

and then remove the headers from this.data, but TBH I'm not super ByteArray-savvy.

The reason I ask for that is that I am bored of the way Shockwave Flash behaves. It is not possible that to draw a few stupid things in my browser it takes 50%, 80%, 99% of my dual core CPU!

MacBook Pro 2009 -
MacOS X 10.6.4 -

Actionscript 3 :: Keep Media Resources For Flash Game

Jun 10, 2011

We are developing an epic game using flash cs5 and actionscript 3 (no flex at all). There are lots of images and other media stuff in library that we need to use. Early i just kept them in my main .fla, but then compiling swf became very slow (more images - more time to compile). So i put all my images to filesystem outside flash, and it helps. But then some lags and bugs appeared, especially when we were testing the game on remote server. Seems like files just don't have time to load (or they loaded uncompletely) - though i did it pretty correct, sequentially, with events like onload and so on.

Finally i've created another swf with all the images and resources. I'm loading it once in my main swf and i compile it only when i need to add a new image. It works rather well, but i have feeling that i'm doing it wrong or there is another right way to organize resources more easy. Also there are some minor troubles with second swf; for example, i have to make user wait until it loads inside my first file, and if i want to run from my desktop, i always must keep these two files near in one place. And, as amount of images growth and growth, it becomes annoying to compile my 2nd swf again, even if i need to do it not so often.
