Actionscript 3 :: Write A Library With HaXe That Uses Type Parameters?
May 23, 2011
First a little background: I'm looking for a way to create a "collection" library that abstracts the Flash Player version based implementation (Vector on FP10, Array on FP9) away from the calling code. I've already written a small AS3 lib doing that but.the performance is bad (especially because of two levels of indirection and the runtime type checks on the Array implementation)the code is ugly (since Vector types need to be defined at compiletime I needed a factory returning concrete Vector instances based on an Enum that contains only the supported types)
I'm currently looking into haXe as a possible solution since it supports type parameters and is able to compile to various Flash Player versions (and apparently compiles into mmore optimized bytecode).Now, my question is: Is there a way to write a library in haXe that can be used like this in AS3 code

Seems like in AS3, I can in theory, delare arrays that can only contain certain data types:
private var my_array:Array.<String>;
produces this error:
1199: type parameters with a non-parameterized type
however
private var my_vector:Vector.<String>;
is just fine. Is there a way of making this work with an Array?

The compiler keeps yelling at my first line "package aRenberg.utils", and I don't see anything wrong with it.
what this error even means? I'll upload the code if needed, and I'm using a heavy amount of ASDoc if it makes any difference.
EDIT: I might have isolated it. If I comment out "import flash.utils.Dictionary;" the error goes away, and it moves on to other errors, however, one of the errors is "1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: Dictionary."

here is just a general question about the use of classes in flash. Say I have a class called ClassA that wants two parameters passed in. So i create an instance of it and add it to the stage with code like this: var myInstance:Class = new ClassA("something", somethingelse"); addChild(myInstance);That works all well and good! Now, is there a way i could manually place an instance of ClassA from the library palette and tell it the two parameters?

I have recently moved from AS2 to AS3 and trying to learn my way around as3.I need to know how I can make a function for the users to be able to type/write in Flash application...Basically what I need at this stage is an input text field and a dynamic text field and when the users type anything in the input text, the dynamic text will be updated and it will show the texts.

So i'm ready to switch to AS3 but there is something i can't figure out is, how do you write a class that attaches a clip from a library, WITHOUT specifying the class in the export to stage thing of the clip in my library ?
All i want is to have a single line like : var myClassIntance:MyClass = new MyClass();
And have a clip attached to the stage and the class assigned to the clip...

Basically looking for a way to get the instance created when I use this function I've made, it seems to me "libItem" will be a new instance and I would like to re-assign that back to the item passed into the function so I can access the instance later.
Here is the function I created to create library on the stage...
Code:
function objectPlacer( libItem, instance:Class ):void {
libItem = new instance( );
addChild( libItem );
}
So here is how I call the function
Code:
// Function( var name, library item class name, pos x, pos y )
objectPlacer( i_ranks, txt_Ranking );
My problem is, I try to access "i_ranks" later with the following code...
Code:
i_ranks.x = 100;
And I get the error:
TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.
"i_ranks" is defined as a class member.
Also, if you know - what should types should I be assigning the parameters instance and libItem in the function?

Users can write a text, modify it (in type, color and size) and choose a picture (which is loaded through a XML-file) for an e-card, then send it to whomever they want. But when they have made the modifications, how do I save the card, and then store it in a database?

Does anyone know if it's possible to have Graphic-type symbols in a shared library as it won't let you add an identifier to them? It's ok to use Move Clips but they increase the file size.

why Flash does not organise files in the library, alphabetically, when type of file is selected? I would like to be able to see all my files grouped by type, but they are not in alphabetical order, which kind of defeats the purpose. Unless I am missing something shouldn't this be an issue for Adobe to fix?

Inside Flash, I have a symbol with type graphic in my library and I want to add it to stage using Actionscript 3. Is this possible?
Flash does not let me set any Linkage Properties for Graphic symbols.
How do I draw stuff in Flash and be able to create multiple instances of that stuff at run time without using MovieClip?

I am trying to create a shared library with runtime sharing so that I can update the interface for an online assessment program globally. I can import items from the shared library OK but once I give something an instance name I get the following error (questionInterface being the movieclip in question here):1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: questionInterface.

Running Flash CS3, I've reviewed the lynda.com tutorial on building particle systems in ActionScript 3.0 to try and build some shooting sparks in an animation.I'm getting stuck at what I think is a really elementary point, but I can't seem to get past it.
Basically, all I'm trying to do at this point is create a class called Particle (which I will teach to do things that particles do a little later) link it to a MovieClip on the stage in my .fla file and use the particle's update function to move it across the stage in a manner defined in the instance (so I can later give different movement properties to each AS generated instance of the MC). I know there are easier ways to accomplish my base task without loading an external package, but this seems so strightforward that I must be doing something very simple wrong I just can't see so I thought I'd post the code here and see what I'm missing.
I start with a file called Particle.as in the same folder as my Spark Test.fla file.
In Particle.as I have the following code:
package{ import flash.display.*; public class Particle extends MovieClip { public xVelocity:Number; public yVelocity:Number; public function Particle() { xVelocity = 0; yVelocity = 0; } public function update():void { this.x += xVelocity; this.y += yVelocity; } }}
So I'm declaring that all particles are built with no motion, but if they are explicitly granted an x or y velocity, they will move by that much when the instance's update function is called in the timeline.
Then in my Spark Test.fla file, I have a small shape in a MovieClip called Spark. In the Linkage properties of Spark I have chosen to Export for ActionScript and Export in FIrst Frame. The class is called Spark and the Base class is Particle. For testing purposes I've dropped an instance on the stage and called it spark. Then in the actions layer in the first frame (the timeline is just the spark layer and the actions layer, one frame long each with no "stop();" so it should run forever) I have included the following code:
spark.xVelocity = 5;spark.yVelocity = -1;
function updateSpark(event:Event):void{ spark.update();}
addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, updateSpark);
What it looks like this should do is on each ENTER_FRAME Flash should call updateSpark which is a function that runs the update() event for the spark instance which is a instance of a movieclip that has an update event which moves x and y position by their relative velocity variables. This all seems pretty straightforward to me, but when I ctrl-Enter to test the movie, I get the following 3 compiler errors:
Particle.as Line 1: 5000: The class 'Particle' must subclass 'flash.display.MovieClip' since it is linked to a library symbol of that type.
Particle.as Line 7: 1071: Syntax error: expected a definition keyword (such as function) after attribute public, not xVelocity.
Particle.as Line 7: 1084: Syntax error: expecting rightbrace before semicolon.

I created an flv video player using Flash Builder 4. This "BasicVideoPlayer" project is compiled into a SWC that will be eventually be used to create other video players that extend the functionality. One of the features is a view that appears when the video has finished playing that displays a "Play Again" button. This "Play Again" view has its own class, "BasicPlayAgain", that accepts a graphic asset that is exported from a .fla file that contains all of the graphic/UI assets.
In my new project, "EnhancedVideoPlayer", I'm using the BasicVideoPlayer SWC as a library to create a new video player that will add more functionality to the "Play Again" view; specifically it will add more buttons to that view.The EnhancedVideoPlayer uses a default class that extends the BasicVideoPlayer class. The BasicVideoPlayer class has a member called "playAgainScreen" whose type is BasicPlayAgain. The EnhancedVideoPlayer needs to override the playAgain member and recast it as EnhancedPlayAgain so it can control the new buttons properly.

I installed FDT5 and it gave me a warning about missing APIs. But at the FAQ it said the APIs weren't needed to use haXe. Yet while trying to follow the haXe FDT5 tutorial, it says to create a new FDT project. But FDT5 won't let me do this. It gives an error that the required SDK's aren't installed. So do I need to install Flex anyway? Or is there something I am doing wrong?

I am mostly intersted in modyfing the components appearance in Flash (CS4) than pulling an swf file which I could include in swf-lib. Right now I am kind of forced to make it via movie clip export it, and build functionality in Haxe.Which as you imagine is not handy and timeconsuming (especially that fl.controls used to work for me very well, I barely had to modify any mechanics, sometimes was just adding functionality).

I'm thinking about using Haxe in place of AS3.What are the disadventages of that?Difficulties with using native AS3 ibraries.Difficulity of debugging after language translation.Haxe is quite young, it may have some rough edges. Does it?What are the adventages? I've heard:
Performance.Multiple targets (But I don't see how that is useful)Better typing that AS3 Maybe better syntax.Haxe is big enough that there should be more. What are the pros of Haxe?
Edit:If there are no real disadvantages then why Haxe is not replacing AS3?

My goal is to make a wide map using only one square image. Using actionscript 3 the solution is to simply make new Bitmap from the Loader:
var loader:Loader = new Loader();
loader.load(new URLRequest("xyz.png"));
this.addChild(loader);
var duplicationBitmap:Bitmap = new Bitmap(Bitmap(loader.content).bitmapData);
Unluckily, Haxe API doesn't allow to do that. I can't get bitmapData from loader content

I need to port a C-like enum to Haxe:
enum Items
{
item1,
item2=0x00010000,
item3=0x00010001,
item4,
[Code].....
But Haxe doesn't allow default value it seems. How can I do this? My real enum has hundreds of entries and for those with default values I must preserve the values.

I am having some trouble figuring out how to overload a function in Flash using haXe. I know that Flash does not allow overloads but can accept function parameters without a type declared, but I am unsure as how to replicate this trick in haXe. EDIT: Since this does not appear to be possible, are there any known tricks that can be used to get around this limitation?
