Actionscript :: Flex 4: Override The Default Button Functionality In A Skin Class?
Jul 20, 2010
I have a videoplayer with a custom skin class. I want to override the functionality of the fullscreen button. When I add an click event, the player still goes into fullscreen mode. How can I prevent the fullscreen event from firing?

For example the spark ComboBox.Where is the default skin?Is it generated (at compile or runtime)?If it was in fact written by someone how does the compiler/Virtual Machine know where to find the skin class? I didn't see a location specified in the ComboBox source.

I'm trying to copy/modify the spark skin for the default button, but not sure how to find that skin. When I hover over <s:Button and Ctrl + Click it, it takes me to the Button class, but there isn't any skin information there.

I'm trying to override the default handling of the 'up' and 'down' keys for an editable list, such that when they are pressed a list entry that is being edited behaves as if the escape key has been pressed, but the 'selected item bar' moves up or down.
Here is my (simplified) component:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:List xmlns:mx="[URL]"
enabled="true" width="100%" height="100%"
creationComplete="initialise()"
editable="true"
[Code] .....
For some reason this doesn't work: if a row is being edited, the first 'up' (or down) keypress ends the edit and moves the bar. Further up or down keypresses have no effect, but if you click somewhere near the list it does start working. This makes me think it is a focus issue. Weirdly, if you hit escape the edit finishes and you can move up and down correctly. If the 'callLater' line is uncommented to try and make the list retain focus, the bar initially moves in the direction of the keypress but then moves back again and re-edits the original line!

How do you set the default value of skinClass for a custom component in Flex? I've extended the DropDownList with my custom component, but I would like to specify a default skin to go with it instead of always setting the skinClass value for each instance.

I trying here to avoid having to bind resources to all my components labels ( ie a button) and find a way to have this automated.
Problem: It corrupts the layout in design mode to bind directly in the mxml label="{resourceManager.getString('myResources', 'submit')}" and makes the design view useless. but when declaring bindings elsewhere, in actionScript or via a bind tag, it is counter productive and prone to many errors and miss.
Proposition: I would like to create my own button that automatically invoke resources to localize a button label. So the author puts "Submit" in the mxml description of my button, and when running it would take the value of the label ie "submit" and use resourceManager.getString('myResources', 'submit').
but I can't find the way to override the set label function, Is it possible if yes how? else how can I go about it?
Maybe I am missing an essential process here that would make the use of resources more elegant, as well as how to override such thing as a button's label.

I am having trouble wrapping my head around the spark skin class in relation to it's host component. Basically, from what I've seen with most every skin that comes in the Flex 4 framework they don't directly expose the properties that are dynamically being set in the host component. Instead, they define states that get exposed to the skin class to define when a component should look different. This is all fine and dandy when you have a very simple component with a standard set of states, but when you have twenty different properties (hypothetically) to set in your host component that should change how the skin looks it could get very complicated very fast.
The way that I've seen that they have used to get around this is by overriding the commitproperties and invalidate functions in the skin class, grabbing the values for the properties they want from there, and then setting them to a locally instantiated variable inside the skin class. This is fine, but I feel like that is just a patch workaround to it which makes things a lot more complicated than it needs to be.Is there any way to directly expose a bindable property from the host component class so when you define your skin class it is directly ready to be read from? Let's say you have custom button with a boolean property of 'selected'. In the skin class, you want to add in a get and set function for the property 'selected' so you can perform some action upon your skin whenever it's set. How do you tell the skin class that this is an available property for you to work with from the host component?

Mac OSX 10.4.11 - CS4. I have a supplied video.flv that I have in Flash with a skin control and exported as video.swf and inserted into a GoLive site, all is well apart from the excessive sound. The volume controller is defaulted to max and I would like to reduce the default volume by about 50%. Is this possible to do in Flash before exporting the video.swf.

I have created a simple mxml file with code as follows:
<s:application..........>
<s:BorderContainer>
<s:SkinnableContainer id="firstRow"/>
<s:SkinnableContainer id="secondRow"/>
<s:SkinnableContainer id="thirdRow"/>
</s:BorderContainer>
</s:application>
Now I want to apply different font size, font color and font type and background color on each row i.e each of the three skinnableContainers.Currently I have defined 3 different skin classes for each of row but I think this is a bad programing. I should create a single skin class for outermost container i.e BorderContainer and any how provide different fonts and background color to all the 3 child containers through that skin class. So, is it possible that I can create single skin class that can provide different decorations to each of the child container.

SkinParts are a great way to add event handlers and logic to an object that is instantiated in the skin, away from any business code. Often, though, I find myself wanting to do the opposite, and define parts that will be used in reusable, skinnable containers in the parent mxml files which will be inserted into the skinned containers.
What's the best practice for when you want to be able to define a control and a skin which can be reused with different controls inserted from outside the skin? Edit: A better way to put this might be that I want to use something that works a little bit like a SkinnableContainer, but that isn't limited to one area where content can be placed.

We are using default CS5 skins with an flvplayback component built through action script 3. When playing certain videos (and only certain videos, however there isn't yet a pattern), the play/pause, stop & seek buttons are completely unresponsive. They don't change stats on hover & they are unclickable.However, the fullscreen button does always work, and upon going fullscreen and coming back out, the buttons now work again. So far, the problem was seemingly at its worst displaying a video that was encoded with Sorenson spark (an older codec) and we wondered if it had to do with the file itself, the headers, anything of that sort. But the fact that the skin and buttons work fine once entering and exiting fullscreen - that is perplexing.

I attempted to build a Flex 4 skin for a Spark button, typical practice. I adjusted the colors and other styles to my liking, including using dot selectors to specify alternate colors and such during different states. However, these are all ignored when the button is disabled. Regardless of what I do, in the disabled state, my button always has the wrong color and is alpha'd to 0.5 (even if I specifically state that alpha.disabled="1"). All the other skin states work as expected. This is my custom skin. If it were working correctly, it would appear to have no shadow or highlight, and would be a gradient grey color. Instead, it appears as a 50% alpha version of the up state (shiny green).
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:SparkButtonSkin xmlns:fx="[URL]"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:fb="[URL]"
minWidth="21" minHeight="21" alpha.disabled="1">
[Code] .....
This is the code used to create and then disable the button:
_action1Button = new Action1Button();
view.actionGroup.addElement(_action1Button);
_action1Button.enabled = false;
The error was that _action1Button is not the actual button, rather, it's the container of the button. Doh! Switching it to _action1Button.actionButton.enabled = false; fixed the issue.

When creating an Actionscript Project in Flex builder 3 an application class is automatically created and dropped in the root of your source folder. In my case my source folder is called src/.Is it possible to change the default application class to a class which is not directly in the root of the src folder? It seems when right-clicking on class files which are in sub packages the 'Set as Default Application' option is not selectable.Is this done on purpose by Adobe to enforce all pure AS projects to have their application class residing in the top-most package?

I have a problem which involves skinned buttons returning to their default skins after certain actions occur in my application. Below I have included a partial screenshot where you can observe the problem.The left button is returned to its default skin after it was clicked (the click triggers a state transition). The right button is the default skinned button. Note that my mouse is neither over nor pressing the left button.The code for the Button Skin is as follows:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
