I am looking for a means of placing the slideDataArray into a 'slot' or value of slideShowDataArray so that I can in the end pass the slideShowDataArray as a parameter to another function.As of now, the last slideDataArray appears 11 times (the loop runs 11 times) in slideShowDataArray and the way the code is written the slideDataArray is unique every iteration of the loop.

Apr 30, 2009In the AS2 days you could create an array and add a bunch of Mc names to it like so

Then you could use this array to reference clips dynamicly or on stage to do stuff.I was trying to do the same with AS3 but came across a problem I've not found an answer to yet. I created the following code:

Now with the line:

I get: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert []@369e8581 to flash.display.MovieClip.but if I remove that line, it works. My problem is that I need to make it a "var" of type movieclip before I can assign a listener to it. Why can't I build an array of movieclip names using:

I have seen arrays in the past that contain:
Code: Select allarray(mc1,mc2,cm3, etc...)
but notice that it's just using the name of the clip and not array("mc1","mc2","mc3", etc..)

Mar 10, 2012I have an Arrays that contains the names of MovieClips:

var MyMCs:Array = ["A","B","C","D","E"];
The actual MovieClips names are "MC_A", "MC_B", etc..., I use this method so I reuse the same Array for multiple tasks, I simply add what ever it's needed to the name to match the task at hand. On this case I add "MC_".
Then I have multiple Arrays, with the same names of the values of MyMCs. The values of each these Arrays are the names of buttons that are inside the movieclips of MyMCs:

var B:Array = ["YY","UU"];
etc...
I could add a listener to a button this way:

MC_A.YY.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, DoSomething)
My problem is that i want it to be done dynamically, using the Arrays values in a loop to add Listeners to the all buttons. The loop system is not a problem for me... my real problem is in the dynamic attribution itself.

I know that this is correct since I tried them separately and I can trace the proper values.
I know that my problem is in the "this" since I get an error message stating:
1084: Syntax error: expecting identifier before this.
I suppose it should state something else... I tryed with "root", "parent", "child", "MovieClip"... with no luck...

May 18, 2005I have been working on a Flash movie that loads variable data from an external XML file and dynamically displays the item names in a menu which may then be clicked to display other dynamically-loaded content that corresponds to the menu item that was clicked. I have now come to a standstill in the project as there is something I'd like to achieve but simply cannot work out how. This is my first attempt at working with XML in Flash and one of my early attempts at using variables. What I'm trying to achieve is; once the user has viewed the item's content, they can simply click "next" and "previous" buttons to display all of the content for the next or previous items in the XML document.
I know it probably sounds simple and I'm sure some of you could achieve this in 5 minutes (!) but I can't get my head around some of the coding. I assume previousSibling and nextSibling would come into play here as well as some sort of functions which access arrays of data for the previous and next items, but I'm just not sure how to correctly put these things to use. Oct 21, 2010I have an array called mclipArray with the names of movie clips stored in it as follows:
mclip0, mclip1, mclip2, mclip3....and so on until mclip99.
Later in my code I want to run a loop using "i" as a counter variable from 0 to 99 and then depending on the value of "i" add various movie clips to be inside the movie clip that corresponds to "i". For example if I want to add a movie clip called "someMovieClip" as a child of my movie clip called "mclip6" and my loop has been running and "i" is now equal to 6, how can I use "i" to reference the correct index stored in the array.
mclipArray[i].addChild(someMovieClip);
The above code doesn't work.

I can get it sort sort alphabetically just by using .sort(), but it takes into account the last name as well.
ActionScript 2.0 :: Array That Creates The Mc's Names?
Apr 19, 2005I have an array that creates 7 mc clips with names.I'm trying to make each one of those peices clickable.When clicked each peice will slide over to the far left "barrier_mc" and stop.Actually not true, the one closest to the "barrier_mc" will stop at the barrier and from then on each piece will stop when it hits the one beside it (kinda like a 7 car fender-bender). This isnt the problem im trying to work through right now, although i will in the near future.
What im trying to figure out is the array that creates the mc's names them like the following "" infoBar"+i+"_mc"". What im trying to do is call that in a function so that i dont have to type in each of the 7 mc names manual I.E (infoBar0_mc) you'll see my function at the bottem in the "function pieceStop"of the pasted code.

They all have instance names.. alabama, arkansas, delaware, florida, georiga, etc..
I am trying to send them all to an array because I need to be able to disable the movieClips all at once and I don't want to call each one separately. I setup an array and a "for" loop, and it properly gets each value in the array:

Jul 8, 2011I've continued with it and have hit another hurdle. When I run the loop to load in the XML images, inside the same loop I add instances of a "thumb" movieclip onto the stage. It's just a little graphic that I want to use as thumbnail buttons. So for example, if the XML loads in 3 images, 3 instances of the "thumb" mc also load onto the stage. I currently give then unique names in the loop but that name gets overwritten each time the loop runs. How can I record each name of the instance? I'm guessing an array but how do you populate an array with a loop?
Then, I'm hoping if those names are recorded in an array, then I can reference the different thumb instances (so they can do different things with the images) and also use removeChild on them when I close the gallery and load in the next gallery. Here is my code so far,
