Flash :: Flex 4.6 Increasing Socket Receive Buffer Size?
Apr 5, 2012
I am having an issue with sockets where the data I'm sending is getting truncated on the client side (Flash/Flex). The data that is sent by my server is full and in tact, but flash does not wait the appropriate amount of time before firing an event saying to read the data. This results in the data not getting fully read and (as such) I can't parse the object out of it after that. We are exploring the possibility of stripping the object into smaller chunks, but the idea is for it to be as lightweight as possible so we would much rather get it to work the way it's supposed to than patch in a temporary solution.I'm not entirely sure if referring to it as the receive 'buffer' is correct, as some computers are able to receive all of the data and others are having it truncated (which means the buffer is adequate but flash isn't waiting the appropriate amount of time to dispatch the event for whatever the reason).

I am writing a online game with flex and java server and I have a big problem. In normal case, my game run smoothly but some time the clients can't receive the command from server. I found that if server send message too fast or client is doing something when server send message, the game client can't detect for a new message so my game is freeze. I only tested with 4 clients and I don't know what happen when thousands clients online in the same time. So terrible :(. In the game client, I use one EventDispatcher class to dispatch any command from the server. Do you have any solution to warranty that client must receive any message from server when the connection is still alive or server must know if client received the message or not. I use flex 3 with Socket (binary) and Java QuickServer.

We are in the middle to evaluate the technology choice to re-design an operator console application. The operator console as a hosted contact center has the abilities to queue the inactive calls, and hold, answer, transfer the active calls.
The legacy operator console used Java Swing. We want to use the latest RIA technology (Flex/Silverlight) to retire the legacy one. But the question is Flex/Silverlight can implement the functions like hold, transfer the calls? Based on my experiences, Flex can listen Java socket to receive XML data? Does it work well to receive voice data?

I am creating a platform game that is 800 by 600 dimension where the camera scrolls with the player. The problem i am having is that if i want to draw a map that goes off screen the stage are that i can edit in can only go so far when i am creating the map however i drag an object further than the edge of the editing space i can see it when the camera scrolls over to it in game but when i do this i cannot easily edit the objects that are not in view in the editing window. I can slightly increase the size of the editing window by changing the dimensions of the game to 2880 by 600 editing and then changing back to 800 by 600 but still i can only enlarge it up to 2880 because that is the maximum. Is there any way i can edit very large objects like a map that are way bigger than the stage dimensions?

I notice that Flash makes changes to a stage size to the right. Is there a way of making the change so it expands out from a central point, i suppose like photoshop and similar. This has caused me some problems in the past when a client has asked for the site to be increased or reduced in width for example, and it can take a considerable ammount of time to move everything accordinly

I made a small box that is filled with navy blue and has a red line around it, but when I increase the thickness to say 50, it reduces the size of my navy blue box.
PHP Code:
public class Box extends MovieClip {
public var color:uint = 0x000099; // class property of navy blue
public function Box() :void {
initialize();
construct();
this.graphics.lineStyle(50, 0xFF0000);
this.graphics.beginFill(color);
this.graphics.drawRect(0, 0, 100, 100);
this.graphics.endFill();

As the piece of music I use on the intro page to my site has become quite lengthy, I decided to stream it rather than imbed the file. I used (AS2):
var mySound:Sound= new Sound();
mySound.loadSound("melange.mp3" , true);
mySound.onLoad = function() {
mySound.start();
}
Which worked fine, the only problem being that after a certain amount of time (which varies depending on computer, bandwidth etc.) the tune will stop and then immediately start again from the top. After this, it will play back fine every time I load the page, until I empty the cache, turn off the computer, etc.
All this leads me to believe that I have a problem to do with buffering. Im thinking that if there was a line of code to override the default buffer size, I might be home free.

I'm creating a client-server game. My client is a flex based game, and my server is erlang server. At the beginning, when I test directly my flex client in flash player, I can establish a connection easily to my erlang server through socket connection. And both can exchange data with no problem. The problem rise when I deploy my flex app at Apache http server, and running it using a browser by calling [URL] my flex socket sends message requesting for a crossdomain policy to my erlang server. So I create an xml message that represent a crossdomain policy, and send it back to my flex app as a response for that request.
Yet still I can't establish any permanent socket connection between my flex client and my erlang server. I know this because I add listener on my flex socket that will modify its internal state to CONNECTED, if a connection between client-server has established.

Live streaming and a buffer on a NetStream do not mix. Why? The docs don't say you can't do this.The playback gets hosed. Buffer is supposed to fill to what you set it to before playing. Instead though, about half the time, the player starts playing right away and disregards the buffer time you've set. Then you get caught in short buffering and rebuffering cycles that degrades the playback experience.
Give it a shot yourself. Here is the simplest of live streaming video players. No frills. Just connect it to your live stream by changing the defaultURL string and stream name in the ns.play() statement.
Run it in Flex debug mode. It will check and print the ns.bufferLength property every second. The buffer is set to 20 secs currently. Last time I ran it, I never made it above 2 seconds in the buffer. Player started playing right away instead of buffering the full 20 secs first. Sometimes you get to the full 20 and sometimes not.

<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute"
initialize="init()">

I am trying to connect to a socket server from flex. I read, on adobe's documentation, the client automatically sends a "request-policy-file" xml element to the socket before allowing it to be opened, and should receive a policy file.
The client sends the xml element as expected, My server receives it (on the port I want to use, port 6104) and replies on the same port with:

I want to create a panel (or any other component) inside a component that has a 5 pixel border on all sides, but scales fully when the window is resized. I know I can set width to "100%" to make it resize, but that gives me no borders. If I put it to "95%",I have borders, but they scale annoyingly. Also, that only works for borders on the right or lower bounds, and not to the left or upper sides.Is there a convenient way to do this without having to write tons of resize-code (in which case I will not bother and just accept bad rescale behaviour, as it is for a private pet project).
EDIT: I know that I can just overwrite the display handling and set the positions manually every frame. I wondered if there is a cheap way to do it in the mxml-structure, along these lines:
<mx:Panel>
width="100%" height="100%"
</mx:Panel>
Coming from C++ and Java, I am intrigued by the option of setting something to "95%" and let the library work out the details, instead of having to write many lines of code, just so my text-area always keeps a 5 pixel distance from the border, but scales with window width.If there is no easier way to do it than figuring out pixel sizes by hand and setting the coordinates.

I am migrating an application from flex sdk 3.4 to flex sdk 4.5.I am using a telnet example of AS3 tutorials as base to construct a generic socket class that implement a specific protocol.The main problem is that the new application with the validated socket class does not fire any event (no error - no connected - no data - nothing). The try catch with the connect method does not throw any error. I checked if the events were successfully connected, but they are not fired never.Update: I used the suggestions to modidy the code. Actually, now I am receiving an error on the security policy.
This is the constructor:
public function GenericSocket(server:String, port:int, output:TextArea) {
// set class variables to the values passed to the constructor.

This is a test program to measure the time it takes Flash to draw a triangle 10,000 times.
The app (code below) calls runTimeTest() every N seconds which draws the triangle 10,000 times.
Now for the "interesting" part: each call takes increasingly more processor until after about the 6th or 7th call it goes to "infinity" (see screen shot of TaskManager)

I am running a socket server using PHP. The socket server runs fine because I can connect to it using PHP.Now, I have a flash application that is trying to connect to it:
this.socket.addEventListener(Event.CONNECT, onSocketConnect);
this.socket.addEventListener(Event.CLOSE, onSocketClose);
this.socket.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, onIOError);[code]....
When I run the application locally, it works! However, when I upload it to my server I get a sandbox security error (#2048). The flash app is actually hosted on the same server as the socket server, and there is cross domain policy file in place.

in other words, suppose I want to send data, like text, programmatically from a Windows app (such as a browser plugin) to a Flash app running in the browser. Well, conceptually, an example of this might be a Flash instant messenger with a textbox and button "Send"; so let's say I want to be able to programmatically paste the text and press Send or otherwise activate it. That's NOT what I am trying to do here in reality (i.e., no,I am not trying to spam other people's chat rooms or anything)but just an illustration of a similar situation.I can include in it whatever widget or hack that may be necessary.The reason why this problem is arising for me is that AFAIK the SDK that is providing me the data I want cannot be directly accessed from Flash, so I need a way to pipe the data from a regular app into Flash. can I have the Flash app interact with other apps through localhost IP? Or are there draconian restrictions on which server Flash in browser can and cannot interact?

Virtualized Layouts are nice, but I find that they often feel a bit "chunky" due to the "tightness" of the virtual range. This could be improved by increasing the range - one or two steps ahead (and behind) would often be enough to improve the "responsiveness" of the list, especially when external resources (like images) need to be loaded.

The orange square is the currently selected selected sprite. The sprites are all draws from coordinates that i receive from XML. var sprObject:Sprite = new Sprite();
[Code]...
What I want to do is the following. If I'm currently on the orange square and I use my keyboard direction buttons (up/down/left/right). I want to deselect the current sprite and select the next sprite in the appropriate direction. The problem I'm having is that I cannot get the x and y coordinates of the drawn sprites. If I look in the array, the x and y coordinates of the sprites are all 0. If I can retrieve that I can write an algorithm to determine the next sprite to select.
