Flex :: Attaching An Event Listener To All URLRequest's?
Oct 13, 2011
We have a flex application that connects to a proxy server which handles authentication. If the authentication has timeout out the proxy server returns a json formatted error string. What I would like to do is inspect every URLRequest response and check if there's an error message and display it in the flex client then redirect back to login screen.
So I'm wondering if its possible to create an event listener to all URLRequests in a global fashion. Without having to search through the project and add some method to each URLRequest.

So Im trying to get the current time (play head time) for a video on the stage and am using Netstream. I have a timer with an event listener pinging a function every 1000ms. But it is not smooth and the numbers jump a bit.
Is there a way to attach an event listener to the netstream time itself?
I tried ns.addEventListener(NetStatusEvent.time, monitorTime); but as you probably know that Dog wont hunt.

when handling data, i always have to write the following:
var dataSourceRequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest("/path/file.xml");
var dataSourceLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(dataSourceRequest);
dataSourceLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, handleDataSource);
while i can understand the usefulness of these 2 objects and event listener being separate, since they often work with each other i'd like to know if there is a method that will combine them all? the closest i can get is this, but it's a bit pointless/nesting:
var dataSourceLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(new URLRequest("/path/file.xml"));
dataSourceLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, handleDataSource);
what i'd really love would be something that automatically combines the URLRequest, URLLoader and completed event listener like this:
var dataSource:Whatever = new Whatever("/path/file.xml", handleDataSource);

printableInvoice.addEventListener(batchGenerated, printableInvoice_batchGeneratedHandler);Results in this error: 1120: Access of undefined property batchGenerated. I have tried it as FlexEvent.batchGenerated and FlashEvent.batchGenerated.
The MetaData and function that dispatches the even in the component printableInvoice is all right. It I instantiate printableInvoice as an mxml component instead of via action-script it well let put a tag into the mxml line: batchGenerated="someFunction()

I'm trying to sync animation to music at a specific BPM. I've tried using the Timer but it isn't accurate when dealing with small intervals in milliseconds. I did some reading and found an alternate method that uses a small silent audio file and the SOUND_COMPLETE event as a Timer.[code]...

I got a reference to an arrayCollection and add event listener like this:
collection.addEventListener(CollectionEvent.COLLECTION_CHANGE, onCollectionChange);
That's fine. Now some other component does have the same reference and is adding items to and removing items from that collection.
Each time the handler is called:
private function onProjectPersonsChange(event:Event):void {
if (event.kind == CollectionEventKind.ADD) {
//do something
} else if (event.kind == CollectionEventKind.REMOVE) {
[Code] .....
Why the removed item is not in 'items'?

In our app, I am periodically noticing that a particular event handler is not firing. 99% of the time, it works fine, but, every so often, it just dies. How can I find out whats happening? Is the DispatchEvent() not happening/working somehow? Is my listener still listening? Did something else catch the event, and not pass it along so that the 'right' listener can get to it ?
Here's a little bit of the code...
Thats a somewhat pruned down version of what the real code is, but I don't think I trimmed out anything important. The key, as I see it is that we fire up the params dialog, then start to listen for the closed event. Then, we show the param dialogs close function. What happens when it fails is that the trace message "caught close event.." is never generated, and, consequently, the closeHandler is not getting called at all.

let's say that i have this button which is called "Click_Here" and i added an event listener to it in some class file in order for it to run the event handler in a different one .. so it will be like this
classfile1.as
Click_Here.addEventListner(MouseEvent.CLICK , buttonClicked ) ;
classfile2.as
public function buttonClicked (e:MouseEvent){ trace ("hello");}

I'm trying to call an event I've created in another component. I've added trace() into my methods so I can see what's being called. Everything except for the event listener (myEvent) is being called.

I know I can create a custom event and associate data with it and retrieve it in respective Event Listener. But What I am interested to know is, is there a short method (without having to extend Alert Event Class) to associate parameters to its alert Listener.

I want to add an event listener to each component inside a repeater, but don't know how. Here's some code I have tried:
<mx:Repeater id="rp" dataProvider="{dataProvider}" width="100%">
<mx:Button id="attach" creationComplete="addListeners(attach[rp.currentIndex])"/>
</mx:Repeater>
This doesn't work. creationComplete is not called until the repeater has finished instead of (as I expected) when the creation of the button is complete. I'm not sure how to accomplish this.
BTW - I also tried placing the creationComplete on the parent component to the repeater, but it would only be called the first time the component was rendered (the data inside the repeater sometimes changes) so that didn't work.

I am writing a web application that will serve as a configuration for a random data generator that I have written in Java.The values that I set in this application will write to xml. The xml data is updated by a file called simulationParams.as and that file is added to each child in the "viewStack" so that when I change any of those values the simulationConfig file will be automatically updated.The problem is that when I press the randomizeBtn the proper events are fired and the listeners grab those events.My problem exists when I uncheck the randomize button.For some reason an event is triggered or the listener isnt listening so that when I uncheck randomizeBtn the values go back to their last position or value on the slider. Ex. if my initial value is 0 then press randomize the slider will go to 100. The config file updates and all is well.When I uncheck the randomizeBtn, the sliders value goes back 0 but the config file isnt update.The same thing happens when I press the useDefaultBtn for both selected/unselected, nothing gets updated.[code]

I have a tab navigator defined in MXML, with two tabs.In each tab, I have some buttons. I have used ActionScript to add event listeners to all the buttons, and they work for the buttons that are visible (and in the currently "active" tab) when I load my Flex 4.5 AIR application.However, I get an AIR error for the event listeners attached to the buttons in the second tab.Here's the crucial part of the error:TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

I'm trying to add an event listener to my air application that would prevent the "ActionScript error" window from appearing, so I can handle the error within my application.I was able to find a little information about this from adobe. I'm just not sure what I should be listening for.

I have multiple items in my app that I would like the user to click on.Some items are completely different classes.The classes dispatch events and then when the events are captured, some modifications are done to the transform properties of a loosely coupled display object.I want two separate classes to dispatch the same type of event, since I already have an image class that draws images based on a given url... I want the classes to dispatch the events, but then I think I want the difference to be detected when the event comes along... i.e., I would like to recognize the 'origin' or 'sub-type' of the event. Some sort of if/then logic would suffice.

I am trying to learn JavaScript and I am wondering whether JavaScript has a event listener just like ActionScript's ENTER_FRAME. Basically, I want this event listener to listen "all the time" not just wait for any particular instance (mouse click, keyboard event) of event.

if I have an event listerner (mouse, keyboard, enterframe,....event) that is being triggered, and when it finishes its event, something that is able to detect the finished event listener and fire out another sets of event.
It works more like MOTION_FINISH in TweenEvent, but it is only available for TweenEvent only, what if I want to detect a mousclick, keyboard, enterframe or even touch event?

My stage has about 25 buttons on it. Each button when pressed to tweens the background to some random x/y coordinates and then loads an external swf file.This is all working, but the timing is off. How can I wait for the initial background tween to end before I make the loader call to the .swf file.Currently each button's behavior is called on the MouseEvent.CLICK event which calls a function that knows its unique filename.swf. I know you can add the MOTION_FINISH even to the tween event but then I would have to call a new function and lose track of the button that initially called it.

I'm moving on to my next massive programming project and I'm trying to decide whether I should code it in as 2.0 or 3.0. I came across the new click event model in 3.0. Right now it's looking like a pain in the butt to me. So now I have to make a function and add it as an event listener? what the hell? What's the benefit? I understand stuff like this makes AS a more complete language but it's kinda annoying.

This is a very basic question but I can't seem to find an answer. I have a mouse over event and have created the buttons with the mouse overs which is working great. I created the actionscript to go to a specific web page when a user clicks the button. Now, I need to add a label to the mouse over so when someone mouse's over any area of the button, it will show them a particular name for the button.
I am sure that this can be done using actionscript in a mouse event roll over command but I can't figure out what I need to show the text. Here is where I am:

this.addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN, keyPressed);

This might be more of a subjective question, but is it generally best practice to have one dedicated method per event-types that you add an event-listener?
Such as:
myButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, onMouseOver);
myButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT, onMouseOut);
//Somewhere else in the code...
[Code].....
And if you had a MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN and other relevant MouseEvents event-listeners to watch for, you could even set a switch statement to handle all the various MouseEvent types.

I have these buttons in a movie clip and I would like to have only one event listener for the parent, using event.target to point to the children. I have also tried event.currentTarget, and it didn't work.here is the code that works:
test01.abtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);
test01.bbtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);
test01.cbtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);[code]....
It is only targeting the movie clip, not the buttons inside the movie clip.
