Actionscript 3 :: Use The Same Event-listener Callback For Multiple Event Types?
Nov 18, 2011
This might be more of a subjective question, but is it generally best practice to have one dedicated method per event-types that you add an event-listener?
Such as:
myButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, onMouseOver);
myButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT, onMouseOut);
//Somewhere else in the code...
[Code].....
And if you had a MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN and other relevant MouseEvents event-listeners to watch for, you could even set a switch statement to handle all the various MouseEvent types.

In our app, I am periodically noticing that a particular event handler is not firing. 99% of the time, it works fine, but, every so often, it just dies. How can I find out whats happening? Is the DispatchEvent() not happening/working somehow? Is my listener still listening? Did something else catch the event, and not pass it along so that the 'right' listener can get to it ?
Here's a little bit of the code...
Thats a somewhat pruned down version of what the real code is, but I don't think I trimmed out anything important. The key, as I see it is that we fire up the params dialog, then start to listen for the closed event. Then, we show the param dialogs close function. What happens when it fails is that the trace message "caught close event.." is never generated, and, consequently, the closeHandler is not getting called at all.

i recently made a custom event and its easy.what i didnt find though was a way to add different types of events under the same category e.g
MouseEvent.CLICK
MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN
...
i know how to make CustomEvent.Type1. how to add other types.

In all the ActionScript examples I come across, people write custom events with the types defined inside the custom event's class definition. But, in my experience, it makes more sense for the object dispatching an event to own its own definition of that event (which, in ActionScript 3, is a String).
[EDIT: After writing this question, I've found there to be cases for both positions -- in some situations, event types should be stored on the event object, and, in others, they should be stored on the object dispatching the event.]

I would like to extends the Event class to add some events I am using in game. But I don't want the new Event Class to have the old public static types. For instance I don't want to have:
NewEventClass.ENTER_FRAME
How do you go about extending the Event class without getting the old types mixed in?
Is there any way to outsmart AS3 to leave out the uneeded types?
Or should I avoid creating a new Event type altogether and just add the new strings?

I am trying to learn JavaScript and I am wondering whether JavaScript has a event listener just like ActionScript's ENTER_FRAME. Basically, I want this event listener to listen "all the time" not just wait for any particular instance (mouse click, keyboard event) of event.

I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to run multiple buttons using a single addEventListener so that I don't have to create extra code. For example, in the code below I have my instance name "btnCA" which is on my movie clip. It works great and there are no issues with this code, but I need to add more buttons. Does that mean I have to copy and paste this code for each button or is there a way to add multiple instances to an event listener?
Sample code:
buttonMode = true;useHandCursor = true;
var rewind:Boolean =

How can i add an event listener to multiple movieclips using a for loop in AS3 so that when i click on a movieclip, flash traces the name of the clip i clicked. This would be it's equivalent in AS2:

Suppose I have a Movieclip and in that Movieclip I have several MovieClips I'm using as buttons.I want all the buttons to do the same thing when I MouseOver. Is there a way I can reference all children of a display container so that I can have a statement like MouseChildren.addEventListener(MouseEvent.RollOver, rollOverHandler) ?

I have been focusing on PHP a lot lately and just had a client that requires an MP3 player playing multiple songs so I had to whip out my rusty actionscript skills. I have the player completed and it is working as desired. The down side is it has multiple songs. I am using separate functions for each song and separate event listeners. My main question is there a way to combine these funtions into one and just use the event listener to pass another variable to the functions? Below is a sample of one of the code for Song1. I would like to make it so anywhere there is Song1 in the code, I can make it a variable so I can put in for example (Song2, Song3, Song4, etc.) This way, I can have one or two functions handle all the songs instead of having to copy, paste and then find and replace.
// Song 1
var Song1:Sound = new Sound();
pbSong1.source = Song1;
//pbSong1.visible = false;
var Song1Loaded:Boolean = false;

Basically i am loading a series of URLs in from an XML file and i want to assign them to each button on stage (the number of buttons on stage and the number of URLs in the XML doc will match). They will correspond, so myButton1 will go to the first URL in the XML file and so on. I also want to declare button mode true on all the buttons on stage (they are actually movie clips) but i just don't know the syntax of how to do it in a for loop without writing the whole thing out in a really long winded way.Here is my code:
Code:
var myXML:XML;
var buttonURL1:String;

I have an interesting problem that I'm attempting to solve and I could use some pointers.Here's a basic run down of the AS3 script:[code]The problem is that the event listener always pulls the url from the last object in the array when you click any sprite (as would be expected).What is the best way to have the event listener only deal with the specific url of the specific iteration that creates it?

So I have an object, generated on each click of the mouse. It's set up as a series of points with properties, with values for position randomly calculated, and set around where the user clicks the mouse. Lines are drawn from where the mouse is clicked out to each of these points, so it kind of looks like a star, but only lines, rather than a solid shape (like those old 50's atom clocks?). So once clicked there's an enter frame event listener on the object so that each of the points 'wobble' (using a randomly generated number) up and down around the original point.
For some reason, I can either set it so that on each new click of the mouse and newly generated object, the last one stops "wobbling" and only the new one does, or each new object moves to where the new object is, and maybe is still wobbling(?), but is underneath the new object. This way has the event.target as a new object in the wobble function, so I think it may be just a case of where the centre point is - i.e. saving the mouse x and y for each object individually, or perhaps I have too much of the setup function code repeated in my "wobble"function?

if I have an event listerner (mouse, keyboard, enterframe,....event) that is being triggered, and when it finishes its event, something that is able to detect the finished event listener and fire out another sets of event.
It works more like MOTION_FINISH in TweenEvent, but it is only available for TweenEvent only, what if I want to detect a mousclick, keyboard, enterframe or even touch event?

My stage has about 25 buttons on it. Each button when pressed to tweens the background to some random x/y coordinates and then loads an external swf file.This is all working, but the timing is off. How can I wait for the initial background tween to end before I make the loader call to the .swf file.Currently each button's behavior is called on the MouseEvent.CLICK event which calls a function that knows its unique filename.swf. I know you can add the MOTION_FINISH even to the tween event but then I would have to call a new function and lose track of the button that initially called it.

I'm moving on to my next massive programming project and I'm trying to decide whether I should code it in as 2.0 or 3.0. I came across the new click event model in 3.0. Right now it's looking like a pain in the butt to me. So now I have to make a function and add it as an event listener? what the hell? What's the benefit? I understand stuff like this makes AS a more complete language but it's kinda annoying.

This is a very basic question but I can't seem to find an answer. I have a mouse over event and have created the buttons with the mouse overs which is working great. I created the actionscript to go to a specific web page when a user clicks the button. Now, I need to add a label to the mouse over so when someone mouse's over any area of the button, it will show them a particular name for the button.
I am sure that this can be done using actionscript in a mouse event roll over command but I can't figure out what I need to show the text. Here is where I am:

I have these buttons in a movie clip and I would like to have only one event listener for the parent, using event.target to point to the children. I have also tried event.currentTarget, and it didn't work.here is the code that works:
test01.abtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);
test01.bbtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);
test01.cbtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);[code]....
It is only targeting the movie clip, not the buttons inside the movie clip.

The MetaData and function that dispatches the even in the component printableInvoice is all right. It I instantiate printableInvoice as an mxml component instead of via action-script it well let put a tag into the mxml line: batchGenerated="someFunction()

I have multiple items in my app that I would like the user to click on.Some items are completely different classes.The classes dispatch events and then when the events are captured, some modifications are done to the transform properties of a loosely coupled display object.I want two separate classes to dispatch the same type of event, since I already have an image class that draws images based on a given url... I want the classes to dispatch the events, but then I think I want the difference to be detected when the event comes along... i.e., I would like to recognize the 'origin' or 'sub-type' of the event. Some sort of if/then logic would suffice.

I created an image uploader for an app I am working on. I first used php for the server side script, and everything worked fine. I found out afterwards I had to use .net, so I created new serverside scripts. The problem I am having is that my event.COMPLETE listener is never firing. I can receive data back using a DATAEVENT listener, but then it stops at this error:
Error #2044: Unhandled IOErrorEvent:. text=Error #2036: Load Never Completed.
Here is how I am sending my file.
var fileRefReq:URLRequest = new URLRequest(FILE_UPLOAD_TEMP);
var fileReqVars:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
fileReqVars.subdir = "Temp";
fileRefReq.data = fileReqVars;
fileRefReq.method = URLRequestMethod.POST;
fileRef.upload(fileRefReq);
The file definitely gets uploaded to the first TEMP directory, but then it breaks with the above error.

I have been experimenting with supplying better debugging information when an error happens in asynchronous code in AS3.
As an example of the poor error reporting be default, take the case where I force a null pointer in a Timer callback (github gist), I get the following stacktrace back on the console:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at Function/<anonymous>()[/[path-to-source-file]/TestClass.as:14]
at flash.utils::Timer/_timerDispatch()
at flash.utils::Timer/tick()
This tells me very little about how the timer callback actually links to my code.
The question is: How can I get information about what code created the callback?

In Flex, is it possible to listen to all event types of an object that's an IEventDispatcher? addEventListener's first parameter is the type, which is a string. In many cases the documentation is not clear what event type it fires. I'd like to attach a generic listener to inspect the events.

I rarely use NetStream or any video in my projects, but someone I email with was wondering this, and I have no earthly idea.
Is there any reason why the NetStream's "onMetaData" event cannot be listened to using addEventListener, but instead requires you to use a callback function?
Is it faster, avoiding the overhead of events? Is it to prevent more than one listener being attached?
