ActionScript 3.0 :: Add Event Listener To Multiple Children At Once?
Jul 17, 2009
Suppose I have a Movieclip and in that Movieclip I have several MovieClips I'm using as buttons.I want all the buttons to do the same thing when I MouseOver. Is there a way I can reference all children of a display container so that I can have a statement like MouseChildren.addEventListener(MouseEvent.RollOver, rollOverHandler) ?

This might be more of a subjective question, but is it generally best practice to have one dedicated method per event-types that you add an event-listener?
Such as:
myButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, onMouseOver);
myButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT, onMouseOut);
//Somewhere else in the code...
[Code].....
And if you had a MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN and other relevant MouseEvents event-listeners to watch for, you could even set a switch statement to handle all the various MouseEvent types.

I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to run multiple buttons using a single addEventListener so that I don't have to create extra code. For example, in the code below I have my instance name "btnCA" which is on my movie clip. It works great and there are no issues with this code, but I need to add more buttons. Does that mean I have to copy and paste this code for each button or is there a way to add multiple instances to an event listener?
Sample code:
buttonMode = true;useHandCursor = true;
var rewind:Boolean =

I'm using for loop to display 3lifes on stage using:
[Code]...
and I have already create a hitTestObject on the character, once the character comes in contact with a movieclip, removeChild(Life); is triggered. The first child removed successfully but when it comes to the second one, an error appear:

What should I do to solve this? and how do I trigger an event after no more life is left?

How can i add an event listener to multiple movieclips using a for loop in AS3 so that when i click on a movieclip, flash traces the name of the clip i clicked. This would be it's equivalent in AS2:

I have been focusing on PHP a lot lately and just had a client that requires an MP3 player playing multiple songs so I had to whip out my rusty actionscript skills. I have the player completed and it is working as desired. The down side is it has multiple songs. I am using separate functions for each song and separate event listeners. My main question is there a way to combine these funtions into one and just use the event listener to pass another variable to the functions? Below is a sample of one of the code for Song1. I would like to make it so anywhere there is Song1 in the code, I can make it a variable so I can put in for example (Song2, Song3, Song4, etc.) This way, I can have one or two functions handle all the songs instead of having to copy, paste and then find and replace.
// Song 1
var Song1:Sound = new Sound();
pbSong1.source = Song1;
//pbSong1.visible = false;
var Song1Loaded:Boolean = false;
[code].....

Basically i am loading a series of URLs in from an XML file and i want to assign them to each button on stage (the number of buttons on stage and the number of URLs in the XML doc will match). They will correspond, so myButton1 will go to the first URL in the XML file and so on. I also want to declare button mode true on all the buttons on stage (they are actually movie clips) but i just don't know the syntax of how to do it in a for loop without writing the whole thing out in a really long winded way.Here is my code:
Code:
var myXML:XML;
var buttonURL1:String;

I have an interesting problem that I'm attempting to solve and I could use some pointers.Here's a basic run down of the AS3 script:[code]The problem is that the event listener always pulls the url from the last object in the array when you click any sprite (as would be expected).What is the best way to have the event listener only deal with the specific url of the specific iteration that creates it?

So I have an object, generated on each click of the mouse. It's set up as a series of points with properties, with values for position randomly calculated, and set around where the user clicks the mouse. Lines are drawn from where the mouse is clicked out to each of these points, so it kind of looks like a star, but only lines, rather than a solid shape (like those old 50's atom clocks?). So once clicked there's an enter frame event listener on the object so that each of the points 'wobble' (using a randomly generated number) up and down around the original point.
For some reason, I can either set it so that on each new click of the mouse and newly generated object, the last one stops "wobbling" and only the new one does, or each new object moves to where the new object is, and maybe is still wobbling(?), but is underneath the new object. This way has the event.target as a new object in the wobble function, so I think it may be just a case of where the centre point is - i.e. saving the mouse x and y for each object individually, or perhaps I have too much of the setup function code repeated in my "wobble"function?

I have multiple items in my app that I would like the user to click on.Some items are completely different classes.The classes dispatch events and then when the events are captured, some modifications are done to the transform properties of a loosely coupled display object.I want two separate classes to dispatch the same type of event, since I already have an image class that draws images based on a given url... I want the classes to dispatch the events, but then I think I want the difference to be detected when the event comes along... i.e., I would like to recognize the 'origin' or 'sub-type' of the event. Some sort of if/then logic would suffice.

I know the difference between the two, but I never felt the need to use the bubbling feature. If I want to listen to an event from a deeply nested children, I always use the capture phase. Could someone explain to me why I should rather use bubbling, its advantages, and maybe show me a situation in which bubbling would be the only solution?

I am trying to learn JavaScript and I am wondering whether JavaScript has a event listener just like ActionScript's ENTER_FRAME. Basically, I want this event listener to listen "all the time" not just wait for any particular instance (mouse click, keyboard event) of event.

I have a Document class called Main.
As a child of Main, I have an instance of a class called NavMenu.
As children of NavMenu, I have multiple instances of a NavLink class: navLink01, navLink02, navLink03, etc.
Back up in the Main class, there is a function called navigateTo, which accepts sectionID variable as an argument.
My question is, what is the best practice to get the navLinks to call the navigateTo function on Main? I've been told that in the spirit of encapsulation, it is not best to pass a reference to Main down to the navLinks, and call the function from there.
But rather, it is desirable to use the event listener/dispatcher method, where the navLinks are dispatchers, while the Main class listens for the navLinks to broadcast their sectionIDs.
While this makes sense, however, don't you still have to pass a reference of the listener on the Main class down through the hierarchy, so that the navLinks are registered as dispatchers? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of encapsulation?

if I have an event listerner (mouse, keyboard, enterframe,....event) that is being triggered, and when it finishes its event, something that is able to detect the finished event listener and fire out another sets of event.
It works more like MOTION_FINISH in TweenEvent, but it is only available for TweenEvent only, what if I want to detect a mousclick, keyboard, enterframe or even touch event?

My stage has about 25 buttons on it. Each button when pressed to tweens the background to some random x/y coordinates and then loads an external swf file.This is all working, but the timing is off. How can I wait for the initial background tween to end before I make the loader call to the .swf file.Currently each button's behavior is called on the MouseEvent.CLICK event which calls a function that knows its unique filename.swf. I know you can add the MOTION_FINISH even to the tween event but then I would have to call a new function and lose track of the button that initially called it.

I'm moving on to my next massive programming project and I'm trying to decide whether I should code it in as 2.0 or 3.0. I came across the new click event model in 3.0. Right now it's looking like a pain in the butt to me. So now I have to make a function and add it as an event listener? what the hell? What's the benefit? I understand stuff like this makes AS a more complete language but it's kinda annoying.

This is a very basic question but I can't seem to find an answer. I have a mouse over event and have created the buttons with the mouse overs which is working great. I created the actionscript to go to a specific web page when a user clicks the button. Now, I need to add a label to the mouse over so when someone mouse's over any area of the button, it will show them a particular name for the button.
I am sure that this can be done using actionscript in a mouse event roll over command but I can't figure out what I need to show the text. Here is where I am:

I have these buttons in a movie clip and I would like to have only one event listener for the parent, using event.target to point to the children. I have also tried event.currentTarget, and it didn't work.here is the code that works:
test01.abtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);
test01.bbtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);
test01.cbtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, mouseHandler);[code]....
It is only targeting the movie clip, not the buttons inside the movie clip.

The MetaData and function that dispatches the even in the component printableInvoice is all right. It I instantiate printableInvoice as an mxml component instead of via action-script it well let put a tag into the mxml line: batchGenerated="someFunction()

I did this once in AS2, but as I'm trying now to code in AS3, everything has to be re-learned. I have a very simple game where the user has to navigate through an intersection without getting hit by oncoming traffic. The traffic is a single movie clip that I want to use over and over. Using an interval, I can add the movie clip as a child of a container, but once it plays it's done. Previously, I used the variable "i" and added it to the end of the instance name. Something like this did work:

I'm using Event Propagation in order to change the alpha of each Child on MOUSE_OVER, MOUSE_OUT, and MOUSE_DOWN using... evt.target.alpha On OVER the Child's alpha increases from 0 - 0.5. On OUT it goes from 0.5 - 0. On DOWN it goes to 0.5 and stays there even with a MOUSE_OUT. What I'd like to do is then add a button to the main stage which takes the visibility of all Children back to 0, a basic type of Clear button.
I have one way to do it where I list each Child in a function (all 9!). But can I re-write this so that all Children are effected writing so much code? Ideally I'd like to send a request to find the number of Children (9) and then use this variable to write a function which says (where 'n' is the Instance name of each Child) that n(0-numChildren).alpha = 0
