I'm trying to create a popup glossary that contains about 100 words and their definitions. Each word is its own movie clip, so that when you rollover the word, it will change color and when you click on it, it will show its definition. In addition to each word being its own movieclip, they are all contained in one big movieclip that works with my scroll bar.Their definitions are all stored as frames in a seperate movieclip, and when you click on the word, it goes to the corresponding frame in that movieclip. In addition to this, I have all the letters at the top (A, B, C) and when you click on them, it scrolls the word movieclip so that all the B definitions are on top, and so on.All of this works fine, I just need to have a search box that will find the words within the movieclip and move them to the top.
View 1 RepliesI wish to create a glossary that is read from an external *.txt file. The glossary function like a dictionary in that there is a word, its definition, and a link to a relevent page where the word appears. e.g. <label="apple" def="that thing people eat" url="apple.txt"> The reason I want it external to flash is so that new words can be added and removed manually and flash will simply update. A user can type in a word to search for in the "sorted alphabetically" list within flash.

Note: The error in my earlier post is giving below error message

The difference here are two things, the earlier error is while converting flash event to custom event and now this one is while converting custom event to flash event and secondly, I have no clue why it is trying to convert to the mouseevent where I am just dispatching my custom event with proper listeners.

View 3 RepliesI need to make a custom event listener (if that's what they are called) so an event listener can pass arguments. I found something on the internet that worked, but it was using regular events and I needed to use mouse events. So I changed some of the code around and it resulted in me producing something that didn't work. Despite this, it didn't return an errors. I use three files: Untitled, UntitledCode, UntitledCustomClass. Here is the code for all of them: (I have attached the final project)Untitled:

I am trying to build a preloader class for loading external content (images in a gallery). I have no experience in this area and I could not find many examples of making preloader classes. I was wondering if and how would it be possible to trace bytesLoaded and bytesTotal from within the preloader custom class. I was trying to pass the Loader's variable into the class and then try to trace the bytes but no luck with that.

View 5 Repliesmaking custom checkboxes/radio buttons. I have created one of each on the stage. The goal is to create each in a movie clip so that I can use them in various programs. As I am using these flash programs in an interface down the road, I have found myself to have trouble with the prebuild flash components. I would like to build my own. I would also like them to be able to only have one clicked at a time.
quick note: I have the buttons both changing their stages in movieclips. Frame 1 is the upstate and frame 2 is the down state.
I have an object called MenuButton that extends MoveClip.I want to arrange 8 MenuButton objects in a cirle. The easiest way to do this would be to use a for loop and an array of MenuButton objects.The problem is, I'm not exactly sure how to make an array of objects. I've seen some code online, appears to be AS2 and I need 3. It's also not very clear if it does what I need it to.It would also be cool if I was able to name the buttons sequentially, i.e.: button1, button2, etc. I've seen AS2 code for that, but again it's not too clear if that'll work the same in AS3 and if the code I've seen will do what I need it to.

The spark panel component for example can be written like this

The motivation here is that I can now create a couple different skin files to change the look and layout of those subgroups. Reading source of the spark panel, there are some calls within the mx_internal namespace such as getMXMLContent() which is a method of the spark group component, but which I have no access to.
Does the description above make sense? How can I create custom 'contentGroups' in my custom Flex4 component that can use nested mxml child components? Should I approach this a different way?
I have the following situation:I have an event handler, that displays small messages in my application's statusbar.These messages get passes through by dispatching events from custom components.A simple message could be like "HTTP Error" or so.Now, the main event listener, in the main application file, listens to the event dispatched by any custom component,but seems to refuse listening to events dispatched by custom AS classes.Here is my code for the custom event:

- The event listener listens to the custom event dispatched by any custom component.
- The event listener does not listen to the custom event duspatched by an AS class.
Those who wonder, the event really gets dispatched, that's why I added a trace call.
In the main file, I would write[code]...
But if I want the component to have that behaviour innately, where do I write it in the mybutton mxml file to have it reference itself?[code]...
I couldn't work it out yet...

I want to have a custom class tempSelection with a Dictionary as a public accessable property of that class. If I use this code, the compiler tells me:

I have a custom Flex 4.5 component (to be used in a List) -

trying to make a movie clip follow a custom drawn vertical line, the movie clip follows the cursor but only the y axis

I have a remoteobject within my main.mxml.I can call a function on the service from an init() function on my main.mxml, and my java debugger triggers a breakpoint.When I move the remoteobject declaration and function call into a custom component (that is declared within main.mxml), the remote function on java-side no longer gets called, no breakpoints triggered, no errors, silence.[code]

View 3 RepliesI made a custom server that accepts TCP connections on a certain port. I made a corresponding client that sends data to the server. The client writes to the socket and the server seems to accept it. In short, the server / client rig works. Now I want to re-create the client only this time, via Flex 4 / Flash Builder 4. How do I go about making my Flex 4 app connect to my custom server?

With that type of approach, the server doesn't seem to be receiving any connections at all. And also, even though I set the requestTimeout to 5, my Flex app seems to continuously try to connect to the server because I rigged it so that the button when clicked will call this HTTPService also that certain button would get disabled and it will get enabled again after it the connection successfully connects, returned an error or if it timed out.
So with all these said, I want to ask you, what is the best approach to making my Flex app connect to my custom made server?

So that brings up an interesting thing. I know you can optimize the above some using something like this:

This would get the last two, but lately I have just wanted community input on issues I have had in the past. So the question is, what is the best way to write a custom sort, using a relatively random order (not alphabetical, etc)?

I am using a custom component at the top of my application that includes an image and a buttonBar. I have the namespace declared in main.mxml as comps and the package is components. When I assign the dataProvider to the buttonBar and run the application, all I get is a blank page. If I remove the dataProvider everything loads fine. the dataProvider is supposed to be the ViewStack component I have in the main.mxml. The buttonBar and image custom component is TopNav.mxml
The problem is that my TopNav component does not know the dataProvider I am asking it to change; MyViewStack. Do I need to create a public viewstack variable and pass it to the component?
