I am sorting an XMLListCollection in alphabetical order. I have one issue though. If the value is "ALL" I want it to be first in the list. In most cases this happens already but values that are numbers are being sorted before "ALL". I want "ALL" to always be the first selection in my dataProvider and then the rest alphabetical.So I am trying to write my own sort function. Is there a way I can check if one of the values is all, and if not tell it to do the regular compare on the values?[code]
I have a ClipDragger class where event listeners (MOUSE_DOWN and MOUSE_UP) are added to any MovieClip I choose, which fires methods that invoke startDrag and stopDrag. This is great whenever drag and drop is all I need, but say I want to add an action to the MOUSE_DOWN function/method (for instance play an animation inside a movieclip) and add an extra event listener (MOUSE_MOVE).writing a new custom class?
I am currently working on the 'Flash.utils.ByteArrays' and I am using writeobject() and readobject() to write and read byte Array objects. I also understand that, the objects are serialized and de-serialized as byte arrays through AMF formatting.
Since I am trying to write the object to a device(credit card reader) that doesn't supports AMF, I was wondering if there is any other way where I can still use the writeobject() and readobject() methods but can control the creation or reading through other 'byte array ' serializing and de-serializing format options if any.
I'm going to write a custom multimedia player. It will be embedded into a web-browser and will receive data from a server over SSL connection.
Required functionality is: MPEG4 video and different VoIP audio decoding (e.g. G.711 or G.729) custom controls waveform representation (or just flexible drawing API) I think about Adobe Flash (or Flex). But I know little about this technology. My biggest concern is multimedia decoding.
Can you recommend Adobe Flex or anything else for this project? What pitfalls can I expect on this way?

The difference here are two things, the earlier error is while converting flash event to custom event and now this one is while converting custom event to flash event and secondly, I have no clue why it is trying to convert to the mouseevent where I am just dispatching my custom event with proper listeners.
The spark panel component for example can be written like this

The motivation here is that I can now create a couple different skin files to change the look and layout of those subgroups. Reading source of the spark panel, there are some calls within the mx_internal namespace such as getMXMLContent() which is a method of the spark group component, but which I have no access to.
Does the description above make sense? How can I create custom 'contentGroups' in my custom Flex4 component that can use nested mxml child components? Should I approach this a different way?
whatever you wan't to call it. Nevertheless, curious to know if Air can write inside it's own installed package. I'm referring to the OSX '.app' files found in great numbers in the applications folder. Since every one of these can be opened as a regular folder, i'm guessing that's what they are.

I am faced with a dilemma. I am writing components with nested components. What sort of coordinate system scheme should I implement? I want to be able to pass points to the components without having to worry about where the origin is in absolute terms. At the same time, I want to have some sort of encapsulation when it comes to origins and stuff. Is there any sort of guideline to follow when it comes to nested components and such?

This is a bit of a crazy question, but does anyone out there know how to go about writing an extra compile step into the flex compiler. The idea would be that the MXML compiler would knock out the MXML to AS3 code as it does, but we have an extra step between the AS3 code and the bytecode.
The reason why I ask, is that this would be a great step to handle things like metadata tags to make code changes. A common practice in a lot of frameworks is to have an [Inject] tag before a variable. I.e. [Inject] public var user:IUser.

I made a custom server that accepts TCP connections on a certain port. I made a corresponding client that sends data to the server. The client writes to the socket and the server seems to accept it. In short, the server / client rig works. Now I want to re-create the client only this time, via Flex 4 / Flash Builder 4. How do I go about making my Flex 4 app connect to my custom server?

With that type of approach, the server doesn't seem to be receiving any connections at all. And also, even though I set the requestTimeout to 5, my Flex app seems to continuously try to connect to the server because I rigged it so that the button when clicked will call this HTTPService also that certain button would get disabled and it will get enabled again after it the connection successfully connects, returned an error or if it timed out.
So with all these said, I want to ask you, what is the best approach to making my Flex app connect to my custom made server?
Now, to sort them, I obviously don't want to do something like this:

This would get the last two, but lately I have just wanted community input on issues I have had in the past. So the question is, what is the best way to write a custom sort, using a relatively random order (not alphabetical, etc)?
Here, I need to create custom component object, changing their element values and appending that custom component in VBox. What are the correct syntax to implement this one?
I am using a custom component at the top of my application that includes an image and a buttonBar. I have the namespace declared in main.mxml as comps and the package is components. When I assign the dataProvider to the buttonBar and run the application, all I get is a blank page. If I remove the dataProvider everything loads fine. the dataProvider is supposed to be the ViewStack component I have in the main.mxml. The buttonBar and image custom component is TopNav.mxml
The problem is that my TopNav component does not know the dataProvider I am asking it to change; MyViewStack. Do I need to create a public viewstack variable and pass it to the component?
