Flex :: Call A Method When A Public Property Changes?
May 12, 2011
If I have a .mxml file that has a method in it and a public property, can I have the method execute whenever the property changes.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:HBox xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml">
<mx:Script>
[Code].....
In another .mxml file I have added this .mxml file like so:
<viewComponents:MyViewComponent myProperty="{myVariable}" />

I have to know if a public method has been called from outside the class or from inside. The reason is that depending on this, one of the actions to be executed in this method vary a bit.

Is it possible to add my own custom property to the flash.display.Bitmap using a public static method? I'm trying to write a bitmap utility that does something to a bitmap, and stores a Number property onto it afterwards.
[Code]....
I'm still learning AS3.0 OOP, I think that this can't be done with this method. I think I have to make a new Class that extends 'Bitmap', add the prop there, and then in the Main.as make a new instance of that class, point to the target Bitmap, and run the method in the extended 'Bitmap' class (?).

To my knowledge, there are 3 options:1 - parent.publicPropertyOrMethod.2 - using static vars/methods.3 - dispatching events.Under best practise for OOP development, which is the "best" method? Are there any more?I dislike #1 and never use it as it and can easily descend into hideous parent.parent.parent references that are easily broken. #2 has it's own problems whereby attempting to get/set instance variables doesn't always work through a static function (I am yet to completely understand this). #3 is great for triggering methods (I use this the most) but sucks for altering class properties and suchlike.

I'm trying to extend a class like panel so that I can fire click events only when the title area is clicked on. The title area is a protected uicomponent of Panel called titleBar. So I want to make that component public.It seems like I'm almost there but I'm getting a "TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference." when it tries to add an event listener to the titlebar.
here is my extended panel
package custClass{
import mx.containers.Panel;
import mx.core.UIComponent;
public class ExtPanel extends Panel{
[code]....
And then this in the AS:
newPanel.getTitleBar().addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER,over);
Still getting the same error.

My flex project uses FA-Bridge, and apparently in Safari browser I cannot call any of my public AS functions that have arguments passed in. For example I can call this AS function from javascript:
[Code]....
In the above call safari throws an error # 1063, (i.e. Argument count mismatch) in the safari javascript console, and points to line 561 in FaBridge.js. It thinks I didn't pass in the requied parameters. Now the above issue exists only on Safari. Both of the above approaches work on IE, Firefox and Chrome browsers. Note: I am NOT using swfObject for embedding my swf.

I need it in FlexUnit to test private methods. Is there any possibility to do this via reflection by using describeType or maybe flexUnit has some build in facility? I dislike artificial limitation that i cannot test private functions, it greatly reduces flexibility. Yes it is good design for me to test private functions, so please do not advise me to refactor my code. I do not want to break the encapsulation for the sake of unit testing.

I have a MainClass on a FLA file that defines both public, private, statics or not, properties and methods.I also have a package named 'components' that stocks Sprite sub-classes for my movie exportable clips. In one of them, I use the "this.root" property to access my main class instance elements at runtime.When I access public method references, same thing, I can trace them and have a true reponse to the question : [myPublicMethod is Function] ? BUT, when I want to execute the public methods, like MainClass (this.root). myPublicMethod(), the compiler boldly throws this at me :Error 1195: Attempted access of inaccessible method myPublicMethod through a reference with static type MainClass.

In my Flex 4.5 application I have a TitleWindow Settings.mxml, which is popped up by the PopUpManager.Once the user has changed some settings, I not only need to save them to a SharedObject, but also to apply them to the main Application itself - so that the changes are visible to the user immediately.For example I need to call its method hideApp(somevalue);
The spark.components.Application does not seem to have any static/singleton methods to get ahold of it.So how do you do it? how to declare, that an MXML file implements one or several interfaces?
package {
public interface Hiddable {
function hideApp(value:Number):void;[code]....
besides the main Application I have a SettingsTest.mxml Application in my project for"unit testing" that particular functionality.

In Flash CS5 I'm getting 1195: Attempted access of inaccessible method testFunc through a reference with static type Doc. when compiling and can not understand the circumstances, which I have boiled down thoroughly.
MyDoc.as - My document class.

public class MyDoc extends MovieClip {

I can get an error-free compile if I take the seemingly unrelated TLF text box out of the equation, either by changing it to a classic text box, deleting it, or unlinking its containing MC from MyClass.
I can also get rid of the error by removing myOtherFunc()'s definition or moving it below myFunc()'s, which I had to do a few times just to convince myself that it was true.
Update: I just confirmed the same behavior on a friend's version of CS5. He's using a Mac as opposed to my Windows setup, and he only has the CS5 version installed, whereas I have both CS5 and CS4.

The problem I run into is that I want to call a method in the component that is now the selected child in the viewstack, right after I assign it to be the child it gives me a "Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference." Is there some way that I can make this work without changing the creationPolicy to all?

public function displayTaskDashboard(evt:Event):void

pm_viewstack.selectedChild = nc_taskDashboard;
taskDashboard.populateTasks(Globals.currentProject.Project_ID);

I am using RemoteObjects to call ZendAMF PHP from Flex/Flash Builder 4.6. I want to stop or abort a method call before it sends the request to the server based on an event or similar.
I have a class where I create and store all the RemoteObjects - for example:
activityLogService = new RemoteObject("zend");
activityLogService.endpoint=endpointServer;
activityLogService.addEventListener(FaultEvent.FAULT,faultHandler);
Then later I can simply call this object:
remotingService.activityLogService .getRecords();
I am trying to find a way in my remotingService object to stop the request - and not send anything to the server - for example if some variables are not set properly.
I noticed there is an invoke event: activityLogService.addEventListener(InvokeEvent.INVOKE,invokeHandler);
However, I can not tell if that's going to stop things at the proper point, or if it's even possible to actually STOP the request - if so, how?

I recently found a method (ByteArray.clear()) that FlexBuilder complains is possibly undefined; however, the method is in fact documented in the Flex LiveDocs. It must have been added in a later version of the SDK than I have installed. I'm not asking about this particular method, but I'm giving it as an example of the documentation issue that I'm trying to resolve. My questions are:
How can I determine what version of the SDK or Flash player that a method or property was added in? How can I tell which versions of the SDK are supported on which Flash player versions?
I want to be able to determine from the documentation, instead of compiler or runtime errors, what SDK and Flash player versions are needed to support newly added methods.
With Java I look for the @since javadoc tag when I need to know this, but I can't find an equivalent feature in the Flex docs.

I know that I can get info about constants, methods, etc of a class by using flash.utils.describeType. But I want to know if I can retrieve the asdoc comments of a class member.
I suspect, documentation is removed when classes are compiled into SWF so it might be impossible to get comments during run-time.

getEventsFromFacilityIDResult.token = currenteventService.getEventsFromFacilityID(facilityIDArray.getItemAt(i));
getEventsFromFacilityIDResult.addEventListener(ResultEvent.RESULT,toShowArray);
}
then this is the function that is called by the service call

public function toShowArray(event:ResultEvent):void

var i:Number = new Number();

the main thing that is happening here is only the last call will be added to showArray the other calls are disregarded..

In my project I've defined a Point class to build Point objects. I also built a Polygon class with a (private) array property, Points. The polygon class contains a method getPoints() which return the current Points array. My objective is to built one or more Polygon objects and assign several Point objects to the Polygon's Points array. Let's say I've created two Polygon objects, plgPolygon01 and plgPolygon02. To both objects I insert three new Point objects into the Points array.
As I call the plgPolygon01.getPoints() method, i expect to get an array with three values. But when I do this, I get an array with six values. So I conclude: while I was inserting Point objects into the Points array of a Polygon object, this Points array seems to be public instead of private. Otherwise, I'd only get the Points I assigned to the first Polygon object and not all the Points assigned to polygons.

Code:
import TestPrivate;
var obj1 = new TestPrivate();
obj1.getGo();
The result is still can be execute even though I put the private keyword in front of the methods. So what's the private keyword stands for actually...I thought it prevent been get accessed from outside...
