How do I call a custom component's public function from the main app. For example, I've got a timer component, MyTimer.In the main app, I want to call startTimer() or stopTimer().In the main app, I've got:

I'm trying to organise my code better and figured it would be good to place the pop-up logic within the component that's being popped-up. However, I can't seem to do this without causing one error or another. I also need to make the pop-up modal.I'm doing something along these lines (psuedo code):

I have trace statements in eveything and from this I know the despatcher in TellAllModeChangeToStudent is being called.The problem is that the listener in the main.as is not calling the function exp.I cant see why and I dont know how to check if the listener is actually seeing the dispatch event?
Is it possible to call/envoke a public static function from JS? I can't seem to get it working and Im almost certain it cannot but I thought I would ask the community.
View 2 RepliesI'm a bit confused in AS3, after long developing in 1 & 2. I'm doing a radioplayer, so I did set my document to be of document class: RadioPlayer. Here is everything ok, sound playing etc. Now my client wants to add a volume button. So I made a movieclip of class VolumeManager. Now, to change the volume, I want my clip to call a public function of RadioPlayer.
As RadioPlayer is the document class I don't know how to reference it inside VolumeManager to call its public function. In AS2, I would say: _root.setSoundVolume(volume);
How do I get "close" button to run runFunction() from within component to outside declaration? FxGlobals.topLevelApplication doesn't seem to be working for this.

i write a sound playback class that stop the older sound and play the new sound.After that i need an extra method in this class that trigger when the sound play is complete.I successfully achieve this, but i need to inform the main app (main.mxml) about the completion of that sound playing.

I would like to be able to call a function, inside the itemRenderer, from the main application.
When running the app, we have a list with three persons, and a button. I want to call the function myItemRendererFunction() inside the itemRenderer, of the selected item in the list, all this, from the main app.

In my main application I have a viewstack with 3 child views. In the viewstack change handler, I programmatically change the selectedchild property.
I understand that the initialize method for the view is not called every time I change the selectedChild Property. So I tried to invoke the init method programmatically too..

have a node that has an asfunction embedded - won't work. if I change the a href to a web page- it works fine. If I try to call a custom function it doesn't call it at all.
View 1 RepliesMy flex project uses FA-Bridge, and apparently in Safari browser I cannot call any of my public AS functions that have arguments passed in. For example I can call this AS function from javascript:

In the above call safari throws an error # 1063, (i.e. Argument count mismatch) in the safari javascript console, and points to line 561 in FaBridge.js. It thinks I didn't pass in the requied parameters. Now the above issue exists only on Safari. Both of the above approaches work on IE, Firefox and Chrome browsers. Note: I am NOT using swfObject for embedding my swf.
I have a viewstack in my main application

I'm using a drag and drop inside to choosecar component, so I want to change the 'currentstep' - which is a variable of the main application - with +1 so the viewstack changes to the second component 'configcar'. The only solution I found is calling a component from the main application, I need it the other way around but I can't find it.

The difference here are two things, the earlier error is while converting flash event to custom event and now this one is while converting custom event to flash event and secondly, I have no clue why it is trying to convert to the mouseevent where I am just dispatching my custom event with proper listeners.

But if I want the component to have that behaviour innately, where do I write it in the mybutton mxml file to have it reference itself?[code]...
I have been working on a Flex Mobile application using Flash Builder 4.6. I have 2 mxml 'views' in my project. In one mxml file, i have a function that grabs xml data. In my other mxml file, I have a refresh button that when depressed is suppsosed to call the function in the first mxml file in order to once again grab the xml data. I dont know how to call that function from outside the mxml file it is housed in. [UPDATE #2]* I thought I should share some more details about my issue.

View 4 RepliesI'm building a top view 2D map, that it's objects are stored on the server.The kind of objects are 10 and might be a photo, label, button, lists, mix of them or labels with tooltips.The component must request the "areas" that are missing on screen.An area is 1000x1000 px and is cached in flex.To move in the map, will be like in google maps (drag-and-drop).I should be able to have another list and move objects from one to another using drag-an-drop on objects. Ex.: I grab an objects from a list and I move it on this map, I release the mouse button and the item is placed there.Now the problem is: I build a custom component for this trying to emulate the item renderer for performance and recyclage, implement drag-and-drop on objects and request the areas that are missing?

I extend the List component from spark and I add some features as multiple kind of itemrenderers and use recycle on them. Of course it must be able to request the missing areas on the screen and cache it's data.Maybe create a custom layout is needed too.What I need is something that must be really fluid, so the lighter this component is, the better.

Anyway I already begin to do this using a class that extends the SkinnableDataContainer and a custom layout. As the layout is not like a grid, is sparse, random items at diferent points(x, y).How to get the localX and localY, relative to item renderer and not to the Spark List, from a DragEvent in Flex 4?
I have a custom Flex 4.5 component (to be used in a List) -
Game.mxml (represents a clickable playing table in a card game):

But I never see the "game clicked: " trace. Does anybody please know why? I'm probably missing something minor, because I can see the "Clicked: 8946" trace.

I have a datagrid with itemRenderer in datagridcolumn as my custom component(c1). I am getting the dataprovider data in custom component by overriding the set data function, it is fine. But now my custom component(c1) is also having another custom component(c2).
Now the doubt is - how to get the dataprovider data in c2 component?

The spark panel component for example can be written like this

The motivation here is that I can now create a couple different skin files to change the look and layout of those subgroups. Reading source of the spark panel, there are some calls within the mx_internal namespace such as getMXMLContent() which is a method of the spark group component, but which I have no access to.
Does the description above make sense? How can I create custom 'contentGroups' in my custom Flex4 component that can use nested mxml child components? Should I approach this a different way?
