Flex :: Determine If A PopUpManager Window Is Open (or When It Has Closed)?
Sep 6, 2011
In Flex (Flash Builder 4) I am opening a new window via PopUpManager.addPopUp. I have timer code that runs in my component and I need to stop my timer when that window opens and start the timer again when the window closes.
I figure it's easy enough to stop the timer in the function that opens the window, but how can I start the timer again when the window closes?
Is there a way to tell if there is a pop-up window in front of my component, or if a specific pop-up window is still open via PopUpManager?

I'm trying to open/close a TitleWindow using PopUpManager.addPopUp() and PopUpManager.removePopUp() while reusing the same TitleWindow instance. I noticed that the creationComplete() is only called once for TitleWindow even if I open it several times and was wondering what events I should listen to for the succeeding popup loads.

we're developing an app that should be able to open specified file with default editor application. (so if it is .doc - it suppose to be opened by MSWord or openOffice)
But I also need to wait until user will close the editor, check if it was changed (by size and date), and upload it to the server.
So the following steps:
1) find def editor
2) open file
3) wait it be closed
4) do smth after that with the file.
now results of my research:
-> opening by def editor is simple: file.openWithDefaultApplication();
but there is no way to know that editor is closed (maybe by checking that file is not locked in timer???)
-> i can start the native process and pass file as parameter BUT looks like the code NativeApplication.nativeApplication.getDefaultApplication(file.extension); does not work for any extension :( - it doesnt work for "rtf", "doc" but works for "pdf"... and [file.openWithDefaultApplication()] works fine with any file!

I'm developing an AIR application which uses multiple windows. I'm running into an issue where I want to open new windows (toaster notifications for example) when the primary application window is not visible, but the behavior is different depending on how the window is closed.
When a user hides all application windows with CMD-H, opening a new window causes all application windows to come back to the foreground (instead of just that new window, like I would expect). If the user closed a window with CMD-W, however, that window does not become visible when I open a new window.
Is there a way to either 1) tell when the user uses cmd-h to hide all windows OR 2) tell whether a window is hidden using cmd-h vs. closed cmd-w?

In Flex Air app, how do you open a window behind an active one?
I tried following and i can't seem to get it to work
[Code]...
With this code, I would expect window1 to open behind the main app window and, in 3 seconds, window2 would open behind window1. But if you execute this, window1 will open on top of the main window and window2 will open on top of window1 and the main app will retain focus. This seems like a bug in the Flex. If so is there any workaround for this problem?

I put the MC that contains the script for creating a window inside of another MC. When I do that, the script does not create a new window. Why? I have the window component in the library of the childMC and the below script is in the childMC. The openBTN creates a window when childMC is not inside parentMC. Is this a "KnownIssue"?

I work with 3d animation. Im have a problem with a personal website Im doing, I have a link in a button inside a flash movie to open a new window and play a youtube movie:
on (release) {
var jscommand:String = "window.open('http://www.youtube.com/v/b0L4XLODhAA&hl=en&fs=1&','win','height=344,width=4 25,toolbar=no,scrollbars=yes');"; getURL("javascript:" + jscommand + " void(0);");
}
This works fine in Firefox but in IE it doesnt work, I then change the /v/ in the youtube link with /p.swf?video_id= and now I have the window open showing the small youtube thumbnail of my video but once a click play, nothing happens, I check it and is not loading anything.

I have an animated dropdown menu with 7 buttons. Each button slides down it's submenu.They're setup so that they open when you click them, but automatically close when you move the mouse out of the area of the given menu/submenu. If i permitted for more than one submenu to be open at a time, then size of the menu in total would be too big.Ok what I need is that, in plain language, when menu 1 is open - the rest is closed. But the menu 1 will close when you click menu 2, not before. OK, if my explanation was too lame here's the real thing, so you can get the idea of what i want:

I would like to display a message in flash "we are open" or "we are closed" based upon time. Naturally I can do this for the users local time on their system, but is it possible to work out if their time is different to UK time (GMT) and display those messages accordingly. After all I don't want a user to see a message "we are open" at 1pm their time - they could be in Japan and it'd be about 4am UK time. Is this possible to work out the time difference on any system?

I have to be able to cancel and kill a Loader process properly and many times. If I dont do this, it seems that the flash player (at least on mac) eventually crashes as some loader processes are flying about , strangling the CPU.
There doesnt seem to be a straightforward way to know this and just calling a Loader.close causes an error, if the stream is not open.

I was wondering if you can make an eventlistener to trigger to execute a function when the window/tab viewing the swf is closed. I searched around, and there seems to be a way to do this with flash.external class and javascript, but some users have javascript disabled, so is there a way to achieve this without javascript?

I have created a simple slideshow of thirteen frames. The slideshow script starts at Frame 2. This is because I have inserted a preloader in Frame 1. When I output my SWF and upload it to the web, it pulls down without incident. However, when I "Simulate Download" locally, Flash says this in the Output window:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at AS3GallerywPreloader_fla::MainTimeline/updatePreloader()
[AS3GallerywPreloader_fla.MainTimeline::frame1:9]
And it keeps writing this error message, ad infinitum, until I close the SWF movie window!
Here is the preloader script:
stop();
loaderInfo.addEventListener (ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, updatePreloader);
function updatePreloader (evtObj: ProgressEvent): void{
var percent:Number = Math.floor((evtObj.bytesLoaded*100) /evtObj.bytesTotal);
preloader_txt.text = percent+"%";
if (percent==100) {
nextFrame ();
}}
I should note that the slideshow portion functions as it should (the Back and Forward buttons advance frame by frame). In essence, the whole movie works. But I suspect I that error code is a bad thing to have. I ran the "Debug" feature (Debug-->Debug Movie), but got no apparent indication of a bad line of code.

is it possible for flash to detect when a user closes an html window with a swf embeded in it?
I want to record a user session time and need to be able to call a function and serverside script from within flash when a user closes the window...is there a way?
(I thought I might be able to do it with onUnload, but that will only work for unloading movieclips, not closing the main swf.)

I've been searching around web and so far found many tutorials/docs on how to install or open air application from a web page. This just opens a new AIR-browser window and that's not what I'm looking for. I'd like it be opened inside a browser frame (even if downloaded first) much like a plain swf file.
I know air file is more or less plain zip, so maybe I could unpack it? What AIR features shouldn't I use for this to work?

I have a flex 3 application that creates an Image from a canvas which the user draws on. I use the ImageSnapshot class to create the image
var imageSnap:ImageSnapshot=ImageSnapshot.captureImage(myCanvas);
var imageByteArray:ByteArray=imageSnap.data as ByteArray;
I want the user to be able to print or save the image. I can use the following code to print the image but flex does not provide good control over printing across multiple pages
var printJob:FlexPrintJob=new FlexPrintJob();
printJob.start();
printJob.addObject(myCanvas, FlexPrintJobScaleType.SHOW_ALL);
I would like to display the image in a browser window so that the user could print it using the built in browser functionality or right click on the image and save it. Can this be done without requesting server side code to do it?

I am trying to figure out how to open a pop up window in my Air application, in a secondary Window, instead of the main application window.I am using the ReusableFX components, which include a custom DataGrid with filtering and other capabilities. The filtering feature displays a pop up window via PopUpManager when you click on the top of a column in the grid.
PopUpManager.addPopUp(this, FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication as DisplayObject);
The problem is that the pop up window opens in the main application - I am assuming because of the 'topLevelApplication' reference.So, I need a way to open this window in the current Air "s:Window". I am assuming I need a way to walk up : this.parent.parent or this.owner.owner - though I have tried that and it did not seem to work (it said null reference).OR, is there a way to get the current top most window / component (NOT the main application / window)?
Update:I decided to create a new project for the component, and add in the Air libraries. Now I am able to access the "NativeApplication.nativeApplication.activeWindow" call. That gives me the correct Air window. However, it does not seem to be working:
PopUpManager.addPopUp(this, NativeApplication.nativeApplication.activeWindow as DisplayObject);
My popup does not appear. I am assuming because "activeWindow" is not actually a DisplayObject?(so how do I get the DisplayObject if that's the case?)

I have a chat program built using flash for the front end tied to a J2EE back end. My program creates socket connections which must be closed appropriately when a user signs off.
When a user decides to sign off they can click the sign off button and everything is peachy. However, a less responsible user may choose to sign off by simply killing the browser window. Is there any way to implicitly call an actionscript routine on this event?
