I'm writing a small application for myself and instead of using a database I'd like to just use Excel to store the small amount of data I have on my local file system. I want to be able to load that data without having to use the typical FileReference browse() method as it would just be annoying to do every time I use the application.
The code below seems to find the file fine as the file.exists method below and most of the other attributes seem to be correct but the file.data is always null.I'm guessing this is a security issue and that's why I'm running into this problem but I thought I'd ask and see if there is in fact a way around this problem.
var file:File = new File(fullPath + "\" + currentFolder + ".txt");
if(file.exists) {
var byteArray:ByteArray = file.data;
}

Yes, you can access Local File System in Flex and that too with a standard SWF without resorting to Adobe Air.Check out the link below for full details and the SWF.

I'm trying to access local file system from Flex web application. I know it is pretty difficult, but I think there must be a way. Is there a way that Flex app can use AIR components or maybe web application can call some AIR module in order to choose files and upload?

say, user created a xml file by an AIR application and this file has been saved in certain location of his machine. If user enters second time in that application, the content of that XML file, should be displayed without prompting him. application should read file silently and display the content.In this scenario, i thought that when user will save that file, the entire file location will be saved in cookie. If user enters second time in that application, the file path will be available from cookie. user will not be prompted.[code]How can I get that full qualified path of saved file?

I am sure this is fairly simple but I just can't get it to work. I am pretty sure it is because of my lack of knowledge in AS 3 and something to do with my variable. Anyway here are the two snippets hopefully someone can make sense of it

I have a String variable in my flex (flash builder 4) application containing CSV data. I need to allow the user to download this data to a local file. For example, giving them a "csv" button to click and it might present them with a save file dialog (and I would be sending the contents of my string variable).Is this possible / how ?I am using the ResuableFX component for the datagrid to csv. This the code I ended up with that works to save the string to a text file for the user (in a web browser):
var dg2CSV:DataGrid2CSV = new DataGrid2CSV();
dg2CSV.includeHeader=true;
dg2CSV.target=adgEncounters;
[code]......

I'm developing an application for the Blackberry Playbook using Flash Burrito 4.5 and Flex. I'd like to create a file browser to allow users to load images from the local system into the application. I followed this example [URL] When I click on the Load Image button in the simulator however, the file browser pops up but tells me that "no file was found with the specified filter", even though I don't specify any filter or even if I specify a . filter.

I have managed to get it to open a file browser but all I can seem to get it to do is give me the NAME of the selected file *eg. selectedFile.name* I also need the path of the file as in C:examplefile.mp3.
The program I'm making plays an MP3 of your choice at a certain time, like an alarm clock. But I got tired of entering the file path of the MP3 EACH time so I wanted to have a browse feature.

I have an actionscript file which provides me with xml data. But I m not being able to save it to the local host machine. The code i m using to save the file is just the normal one i.e
var xml : XML = <save><instruments/></save>;
var fileRef:FileReference = new FileReference();
fileRef.save(xml,"NewFileName.xml");
I've tried saving the data as byteArray first n saving it in a xml file. That didnt work. I've flash player 10 installed and I m working in Flash Professional CS5. I have also used a hex editor and changed my swf file's 7th and 8th bits from 09 to some A0 as directed in a website but I m always getting an error which is
1061: Call to a possibly undefined method save through a reference with static type flash.net:FileReference.

I am a newbie to Flash and ActionScript 3.0 platform. I don't know whether this is the correct place to post this kind of queries/problems/issues here. Till now, I had posted only basic flash issues here in this forum. I feel this is the most powerful issue which created head-ache to me till now. I spent nearly 4 hours working with this issue. But, I don't find any solution even in google.I have created a swf file, which when gets executed, gets data from backend database and displays as items in Combo-box. In swf file, if we select an item from Combo-box, collects data from database and gets back to flash and displays them as items in Combo-box. Each item has a specific image(.jpg file)associated,which gets displayed on stage of flash file(.swf file) upon selected from combo-box.
I am calling/invoking the flash file, When I click on a Button/select a tab created within my Java application.But,when the button gets clicked/tab gets selected, Combo-box is visible in flash file, but with no elements when we try to click upon it and the following error is getting displayed in a dialog-box:Title of the error is: An action-script error has occured.[URL]

How can I get the full file path of a file? I have this so far:
ActionScript Code:
var fileRefList:FileReferenceList = new FileReferenceList();
fileRefList.addEventListener(Event.SELECT, selectHandler);
browse.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, brwoser);
[Code]....
I can only get the file name and that pretty useless for an upload to a server. I will be using php to ftp it to my server.

I plan to run my App off a thumb drive, and I need to be able to find the full filepath of my Flash app at run time, so I can then point to an xml folder on the hard drive. I need it to work on Windows or Mac, so it needs to find the full path of the running file, then append the "xml" folder onto the end.

I am finding this task challenging in AS3.if I am missing something basic/simple or some builtin method which can do this. I am not well versed with RegExp.I have a DYNAMIC string representing full file path which looks exactly like "d: empabc.doc". I want to extract the filename part from complete string e.g. abc.doc.I am aware of techniques like using "fullPath.lastIndexOf("\")" or regular expressions. The problem is it doesn't seem to work if you have "" in your path. It works with "/". The path being dynamic can't be manipulated to replace "" with "/" or any other delimiter. My interpretation is that since "" is used to escape characters - ANY character appearing AFTER "" is ignored by actionscript. e.g.[code]

I am in the process of writing a custom script for our internal SharePoint system that will allow for multiple file uploads on list items. In order for this to happen, I was wanting to use a flash file input (to select multiple files at the same time) and then pass an array of file paths (local to the user) into my ASP page to do the actual uploading.Does anyone know of a SWF multiple upload plugin that allows this? I've looked at Uploadify and cannot find what I need there.

I just created a 448x380 SWF with the following code:
[Code]...
Why doesn't that load a video? The skin partially appears, but the video does not. Hitting "Play" gives a server error, even though I'm testing locally. Does FLVPlayback need the full MACHINE PATH -- file:////blah blah blah -- to access that local file? You'd think not.

I need to disable all the aspects of functionality which access the client file system in a flash/flex application. I started having a look on how to do this. It appears that the package flash.filesystem need to be importated to allow the interaction with the file system. However, I did not find any reference to this package in the application. I am a beginner concerning these technologies so maybe I am missing a point here. Do I need to look into an other direction?
