Adobe - Access Local File System From Flex Web Application?
Jan 5, 2011
I'm trying to access local file system from Flex web application. I know it is pretty difficult, but I think there must be a way. Is there a way that Flex app can use AIR components or maybe web application can call some AIR module in order to choose files and upload?
Yes, you can access Local File System in Flex and that too with a standard SWF without resorting to Adobe Air.Check out the link below for full details and the SWF.
I've found several examples and documentation that show how to read and write files on the system, but all show user intervention or reading/writing files in user profile directories. There are a few things I want to do:
Monitor system and other application log files for changes, then automatically load those files when changes occur Reload a previously open file when the application launches Write files into a log directory, which probably will not exist in the same path as the application.
In my very quick search, it seems that there may be a security model that constrains an AIR application's access to the file system, so that files can only be read or written to directories selected by the user with the file system dialog OR files can be written within the user profile or air application directory.
Does an Adobe Air application have unconstrained access to the file system?
I'm developing an application for the Blackberry Playbook using Flash Burrito 4.5 and Flex. I'd like to create a file browser to allow users to load images from the local system into the application. I followed this example [URL] When I click on the Load Image button in the simulator however, the file browser pops up but tells me that "no file was found with the specified filter", even though I don't specify any filter or even if I specify a . filter.
I have made a application that plays videos that are stored in a assets folder of the air application but when ever I run it on an hp slate the videos are really choppy. Is there a way to preload the video or does it have to do with the processing power? the videos are 1.72mb or smaller. They are flv format and they auto play when that application is started. I am using flash builder.
I want to show a local html file into my application but I could't find to do that.
I used <mx:HTML> component with using its location property but it is not working when I try to do it with a local file which is in applicationdirectory.
EDIT: Here is my code :
<fx:Script> private function init():void {
I am working with Flex, Flash, Action Script and I want to browse the local machine file system using Operating System's file browse window and select a file then i want to get the full path of the selected file. How can I do this?

I need to disable all the aspects of functionality which access the client file system in a flash/flex application. I started having a look on how to do this. It appears that the package flash.filesystem need to be importated to allow the interaction with the file system. However, I did not find any reference to this package in the application. I am a beginner concerning these technologies so maybe I am missing a point here. Do I need to look into an other direction?
I am looking for utility/helper classes for Adobe AIR/actionscript 3.0 file system and native process utilization. Could someone point me to opensource library projects specific to Adobe AIR..
I am creating a Flex application for intranet use.I need the application to execute files, with different file types (txt, emails, etc.) at specific known locations on the clients computer. Is it possible to give permissions to the Flex application to execute local files? (I have administrative rights on the clients computer)
I'm writing a small application for myself and instead of using a database I'd like to just use Excel to store the small amount of data I have on my local file system. I want to be able to load that data without having to use the typical FileReference browse() method as it would just be annoying to do every time I use the application.
The code below seems to find the file fine as the file.exists method below and most of the other attributes seem to be correct but the file.data is always null.I'm guessing this is a security issue and that's why I'm running into this problem but I thought I'd ask and see if there is in fact a way around this problem.
var file:File = new File(fullPath + "\" + currentFolder + ".txt"); if(file.exists) { var byteArray:ByteArray = file.data; }
I am using FDT for Flex development and when I compile, and it tries to access a flv file, I get the error "cannot access local file". This is obviously a security sandbox thing. Now I tried adding crossdomain.xml to the root and it still makes the same error. I know somehow I need to add to my project use-network=false, but i cant for the life of me work out where the flex compiler additional arguments area is. I know in eclipse how to do it, but with the slightly modified FDT, i havent got a clue
In Python there is a function: os.system(command) that runs the command passed by parameter in the command line, there is something similar in AS3 (or MXML) running an Adobe AIR Desktop Application?
I'd like my application to be pretty light so it loads quickly. So i'd like to place all my assets (XML files, graphics, etc) outside from the main Air file and when the main Air file is loaded into memory, I'd like it to load in the asset files at runtimeSo how do I go about telling Flash builder to save my asset files locally when it packages my Air Application and also ensure I can access these files while debudding my application?
I think it can only access the network but not local file system, but from internet some people said it can in the newest version, can anybody confirm? It can reach arbitrarily file or just a specific location?
Is it possible to save text format file to our local system using Flash Player 9? Flash Player 10 has that facility to save text file, but i am not sure about Flahs Player 9. Please replay if anyone have implemented such using Flash Player 9.
I'm building an application in Flash CS3 to be deployed on CD as a Projector file. Is there any way to enable the user to browse to and play video files from their local file system.
I currently have a network camera that streams video as a .swf (and also as a motion JPEG as well...) and I want to be able to embed the stream inside of either a Flash or Air project that I'm creating myself. The only examples i've been able to find though, require the .swf to be saved as a resource of the project; clearly, this is undesirable for a live stream.
Another option is to utilize the motion JPEG. I have some generated code (shown below), but unfortunately only the first image is displayed when viewed via adobe air (if I were to view it in a HTML browser, the image would automatically update, effectively showing the stream:
function displayImage( ) { // Set the BaseURL to the URL of your camera
Does anyone know if there is any way for a Flash projector (either .exe or Mac app) to create or modify a file to the local file system? This could be anything... Flash creating a txt file, xml file, swf, anything at all.

I need to know what the details are of the file permissions of an adobe AIR app. Specifically, to where can may it write text files? Anywhere on the local system? I heard Adobe has a set of "Sandbox Permissions" but these just confuse me as I don't know where they apply. Additionally I wish to know if you need some kind of special permission to append to a file somewhere on the system.
I'm working on a project. In that we can register complaints to the IT department about system failure or software failure. In our company each computer is having unique system(local)IP address which is shown in the image below.
I want my complaint to be registered with that address, by which IT person can identify my system and repair it.
I am creating an web application in which users can upload documents, create folders (just like any file explorer) problem Is how should I translate this Hierarchical structure into Mysql database flat structure, how should I creat a tree view from database?
I have a HTML box and load a local html file from the project. In this HTML file I use jquery and I want to load an image from my user directory. I see the image from my user directory but jquery doesn't works. I get this error:
[Code]...
But if I load an image from the app workspace, everything works fine (I see the image and Jquery works). Is this a policy problem? The error says that is a "null object reference" problem, but this can't be true...
Does anyone know a good library to unzip local files in adobe AIR for with actionscript 3? I have: A local file named somefile.zip I need:To give some external library a path where I want to save the unzipped version of file.It must be able to process the file and not load it all into the memory.I found the FZip library - but it loads all archived data into the memory. And also found the nochump library, but there is no such parameter to choose where I want to unzip the file.
I'm trying to develop a simple mxml Flex application to start Skype from the AIR/Flashplayer runtime. Is it possible to get back events from a native Windows application? In the simple example of Skype, the OS returns control to the Flex app when Skype exits. But what about native applications which have their own event model and wants to communicate with the Flex event model. For example, a Face detection system which shows "Hello" on a Flex app when the camera detects a face. Can this be done in the current Flex framework?
I am working on an Adobe AIR Application. The size on Application window is 800X600 and is contains border container and border container contains many controls. What I want is to if user re-sizes the application then that container should also be re-sized according to scale. i.e If user maximizes or minimizes the window then that border container should also be maximized or minimized respectively.
