Javascript :: HTML - Call A Function From A Flash Object?
Feb 7, 2011
I am trying to call a Jscript function from a flash object. I want the function to be called when the animation ends.
Here is the embed code
<h1 align="center">
<OBJECT classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"
codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,0,0"
WIDTH="360" HEIGHT="250" id="Yourfilename" ALIGN="center">
[code].....
here is the action code I add to the last frame of the flash object
URLLoader("javascript:mainFunction();");
The object loads but the function is not called. I can call the function other ways such as using an "onclick = mainFunction()" event on a button for example.

i have some actionscript that makes a
ExternalInterface.call('someFunction');
call.is it possible to reference the html object that made the call to someFunction directly using the ExternalInterface.call call?
Assume that the object that makes the call also has some Callbacks (via ExternalInterface.addCallback) that are accessible via javascript.
Currently:
Actionscript source
ExternalInterface.call("someFunction");
ExternalInterface.addCallback("someCallback",someASfunction);

i want to call a javascript function from within an embeded swf file in a html page and i'm using the ExternalInterface class. i know this function must be defined in a <script> tag in the html page. however, i want to have all my javascript code in an external file, but it doesn't work. my trial file just can't find the function, although i have my external js file linked in the header.

I was recently searching for a way to call the print function on a PDF I was displaying in adobe air. I solved this problem with a little help from this fellow, and by calling postMessage on my PDF like so:
//this is the HTML I use to view my PDF
<object id="PDFObj" data="test.pdf" type="application/pdf"/>
//this actionscript lives in my air app
var pdfObj:Object = htmlLoader.window.document.getElementById("PDFObj");
pdfObj.postMessage([message]);
I've tried this in JavaScript as well, just to be sure it wasn't adobe sneaking in and helping me out..

I have a function defined in JavaScript like so:
function fadeBack() {
alert("fadeBack called");
};
I call that function from my Flash file like so:
import flash.external.*;
flash.external.ExternalInterface.call("fadeBack");
This works in both Safari and Chrome, but for some reason Firefox won't ever call the function. Still, I can't figure this out. How can I fix it?

I'd like to call a javascript function from an embedded .swf file. Specifically, I'd like to call a function in one of my externally linked javascript files from within: function loadTrack(){

which is in an .as file which I assume somehow becomes the swf file. How would I go about this and 're-compile' the .as file?

Here's the challenge: I have a Flash movie which will be embedded in a page using an unknown DOM ID that I want to be able to identify/store for callback in a JS function. My ideal user flow would be: User clicks button in Flash. Flash pauses any animations / video / sounds / etc. Flash calls an injected JS function to display a page-covering overlay experience. When user closes overlay experience, a callback method on the Flash object is called. Flash resumes playback.
The problem is, when AS3 uses the ExternalInterface.call("functionName", args...) method, there doesn't seem to be a DOM event triggered, and thus it is impossible to tell which object called a JS function, so having a "registerMe()" function doesn't seem to work. Basically, the injected JS function has no way to determine which DOM object to call, because the ID of the Flash object is unknown.

I'm trying to use ExternalInterface.Call to call a JavaScript function to launch a lightbox window. So far I have this:
AS3:
flash.external.ExternalInterface.call("launchLB", "" + aUrl + "");
JavaScript:
function launchLB(url) {
alert(url);
[Code]....
I get the alert but I can't get the lightbox window to display. When my as code makes the ExternalInterface call I get what looks like a page refresh and a blank browser window.

I have some actionscript that plays a movie clip. When the movie clip is over I want Javascript to remove the Flash object from the page. I can't seem to get it working. When I test the actionscript in Flash I don't get any compilation errors, and my Traces all execute when I expect. I also don't get any javascript errors thought the RemoveFlash() function never gets called.

I'm trying to edit some flash to make an external javascript function call, but with no success. Here's my actionscript 2.0 code:

I've seen lots of examples and I'm mainly confused about the use of ExternalInterface.addCallback. I don't need the javascript to return anything to flash, so is this necessary? For whatever reason, I never see the alert. Does anyone see any problems in my code? Is there some ExternalInterface library I don't have? Also, what's the BEST way to use ExternalInterface (ie; error checking, etc.)

I have another question which i think is most easily solved by using javascript to find out if flash exist or not and dynamically modify the page. In my case place a placeholder, call jcupload code if flash exist or replace the placeholding div with my html
But the problem is i havent been able to find any javascript functions to tell me if flash is installed. All i found were html that displays alt html if flash isnt shown/enabled.

I have a flash SWF that passes a variable as a parameter to a javascript function in my HTML page. Somehow I need to put that value of that parameter into a global variable I can use outside the html javascript function that actually receives it from the SWF function that passes it. Ultimately I will store that value in a hidden form field in the HTML so I can reuse it elsewhere.
Using an alert box, I can see my desired variable data is being passed by the AS2 function but I can't figure out a way to access it from outside the javascript function. Here's a screen print of the alert and what I see when I try to reference it outside the function. Here is a link to a screen pic that demonstrates that
This is a code snippet that starts with the javascript function that receives the variable. YES, I know the"mailLink = str" is not valid. It just demonstrates how off the mark I am.
Code:
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
var mailLink = null;
function callJavascript(str) {
[code]....

is it possible to let clicks on a HTML element that's overlaying a Flash or Silverlight object bubble through to the Flash / Silverlight object? I've been experimenting with this, but i can't figure out if it is even possible because of possible security restrictions to prevent clickjacking.I don't have access to the source code to the FL / SL object, so i can't implement an ExternalInterface or something like that.

Excuse me, I'm afraid I'll show my ignorance here,I'm trying to update my music site, and am happy with the look I get when I preview in IE from Dreamweaver, but when I upload to my site online, IE chokes up and the flash object never shows up, as on the iphone iOS 4.3 safari browser, and Firefox renders the object, but too far too the left.
Basically, when I have href text of various song names in cells on a table with a background image. When a song name is clicked, I'm attempting to have songs from my soundcloud account show up and play in a cell on the table, using an iframe. This is sort of working locally in IE, but nowhere else (see above). The code I grabbed from soundcloud is a flash object with a number of parameters defined that I am not able to utilize in my current method of just using the src="http:samplefile.com" part of the ofject code, not the other object parameters.
I've also tried creating separate html pages that have the full object code and nothing else, and then having my text in my table cells call these html files to show up in the iframe--that's actually working in IE, and though the location is off, in Firefox, but not on an iphone. Here's the link, try clicking "walking" at the top for the first approach, or "Batesville" for the object-in-blank-html approach:[URL].

I want to display a Flash video in a popup window, and when the video has finished playing, close the window using a javascript function "closeIt":
<script>
function closeIt() {
alert("About to close...");
[code]....
How can I achieve this? I have imported a video into Flash (choosing "load external video with playback component"). This is in frame1. I thought that in the second frame I could make a call to ExternalInterface.call("closeIt") in the Actions window. I have tried this, but when I publish and view the flash movie in a web brower, I never see the javascript alert.

I have an ActionScript program that I want to access some external JavaScript functions. By external, I mean that the ActionScript/swf aren't going to be loaded via the HTML/JavaScript. Everything I see recommends ExternalInterface, but that seems to imply that your JS loads your swf. Is there a way to call a JavaScript function by URL?
