We are revising our company website and I wondered if it considered bad practise to use flash on the home page.This would cause issues for those users who dont have flash installed (and maybe dont want flash)

I'm using LoadVars to retrieve some data from a table using php. When I use the app from within my Flash environment I am able to retrieve the info, but once I post the swf to the website nothing happens. I"m posting to the same remote page. I don't think LoadVars is even firing since the trace in my else clause is not firing.

why Bitmaps are not considered children of displayObjects (at least from my observations, I think this is true). They themselves are displayObjects so therefore should be part of the display list. In fact, when multiple Bitmaps are in one MovieClip, it recognizes them as one child, a Shape instance. Could anyone explain this to me? I'm attaching an example with a few display objects in a movieclip.
View 8 RepliesI've been given a Flash tutorial to post to the corporate website that is an .exe file with an embedded Flash player. Users will be on IE, so I guess they would get the run/save prompt. I don't like this and I know it generally isn't done, but I need to know if it is OK to just do it. When I try to explain the security issues with executable files, eyes glaze. Is it possible that the users' system admins would be able to block the run prompt and make the user save the file? Could they block that too? The user community is hopeless, so having the embedded Flash player could be a good thing.

View 4 RepliesI have a particular problem where I normally would use a db and php for back end but in this case I cant. its a small app that would consist of 4 tables category, price, product, and product_association. the product_association would store which category and type the products are associated with. so as an example if you have cars. you might have off road as the category the cost would be 20-25k could be suv. now a product can belong to more then one category but only one price. trying to figure what the best way to simulate a relational database with in flash. thinking objects, arrays, how to do the relationships.

Does anybody use bare .SWF files as webpages? I know it's possible; it seems to work fine for me. Why would I embed a SWF inside an HTML page if it's just going to be full screen (I mean the size of the browser's normal viewable page area, not COMPLETELY fullscreen)?
Is there a lack of browser support? Or is this functionality determined by the browser's Flash plugin?
I want to have a web site which switches the web camera of users, makes a video recording and send results to my web server.Is it possible to do that? I think it should be. The rest will be queued.If I have a flash movie on the page which is continually making image requests, how does this affect the maximum number of downloading files in the browser?
Is this browser limit accurate, and is it generally the same across browsers? Does flash share the requests of the browser? If not, does flash have a limit and what is that limit?
For some background, I do have a flash movie that is continually loading files so there is a queue of Loaders waiting to make requests.My idea was that if there was a different request that I needed to be executed straight away I could make it jump the queue by making a javascript call and allowing the browser to make the request instead.

View 1 Repliesi downloaded a free of use gallery from (this gallery) and i'm trying to load it in my flash site .. now, the gallery works if i open it directly (i open the swf file)when i try to load the external swf file into my siteloadMovie("image_gallery.swf", box);then the movie loads .. the gallery is displayed the message "loading xml file" displays and then when the xml is loaded the message "loading image 1/7" displays and only the first image loads.
once the first image is loaded it will not be displayed (it remains outside of my swf file .. i can see it when i resize the window) and no other images will be loaded.if i open the gallery.sfw file again everything works fine .. the problem is only if i try to load the gallery.swf in another swf ..something must be wrong ..i tryed to opern the gallery.fla file and copt everything directly in my site and the problem remains the same .. only 1 image loaded and not displayed in the gallery
recently i needed to share data between different flash .swfs on a homepage.. so i tried to use Shared Objects to do so..
sofar its fine.. i tried it .. and as long as the data is stored on my harddisk.. the sharedObject "cookies" work fine.. but when i put the site online.. they simply dont work anymore..
could this have something to do with security settings of the browser used?. doesnt a web browser allow flash to access the harddisk to read and write shared objects..
is there another.. simpler and more reliable way to send data from one .swf file to another..?? (without using php -> my webserver doesnt support this sofar )

I would like to show customer's details, but there will be an edit window, than the datas of customer will be editable. I would like to show a new form where the data can be edited. What is the simplest way to show this form. I can make my ui tabbed, so I can open the form in a new tab, or I can open the form in a popup/modal dialog (Save-cancel). Maybe I can use in line editing. What is the most user friendly solution in a Silverlight or Flex GUI? What is your opinion?

But that complicates things because I would need to extend my class as a displayObject and then add it to the displaylist to be able to use "MovieClip(root)" to access the variables in my document class.. as long as variables in my document class are set out as public variables..
I didn't realise you could refer to variables on the document class by just using something like:

With the the variable on the document class as "public static var". This solves a lot of problems.. as now I do not need to keep adding objects to the displaylist to get access to the document class variables..
Now.. My question is..Since I want to access most of my variables on my document class.. I would need to set them all to "public static var".. Would setting 100 or so variables to "public static var".. have any disadvantages? Like performance issues... Or anything else which may make it not be as efficent if I were to keep them simply as "public var" and use "MovieClip(root).variable" to access them?

Inside of the getVideoReveiver() function I'm getting the flag to go off from writeText("flag") then I get and output in the text box of:

from the netStreamHandler, but the video never shows up in the receiving video element.I'm running this is two different videos of the same computer and taking the nearID from one stream and pasting it into the textInput theirID. I'm not sure what to try next?

I need to know which button is pressed, so i use the (tricky) unprofessional methode: event.target.name.the question is; how can I know which button is pressed, using a custom event, this custom event should pass some vars to the called function, including the j var (from the loop)actually I tried setting a custom event using the example at the noponies accordion menue class, but it's so complicated to get working.
