I am working on a new project involving displaying and playing different movie clips depending on choices made by the user. What is the best aproach for this sort of thing, ie addChild/removeChild or visibility or whatever?

I'm trying to create a container movie clip, then inside that, create several other movieclips with an image in each and display them with an offset x.It does the offsetting but only displays the last one at the last x.When i dont put the clips in a container it works fine. but i want them in the container so that i can movie the container around on a press.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash Nested MovieClips Not Displaying Relative To Each-other?

I am creating a film strip of thumbnails and am dynamically creating the thumbnails from an xml file. All this works great. The issue becomes the fact that I need for the filmstrip to resize when the window is resized and add or remove the number of the thumbnails as necessary. In order to calculate where the last thumbnail should be, I'm using the following code to calculate the x position:

var lastX = rightArrow.x - (thumbWidth + 10); 

where rightArrow is actually filmstrip.filmnav.rightArrow. I get the correct answer - but when I add the thumbnail to the movieclip filmstrip.panelscontainer.thumbcontainer, it's actually on top of the rightArrow. Clicking on both of them to see where Flash thinks the X is will show that Flash this the X of the thumbnail is at 607 and flash thinks the X of the thumbnail is 731, which is as it should be -- so why is the thumbnail so far to the right?The first thumbnail should always be x=10 and that is working fine and I'm currently not trying to layout the other thumbnails because they were all screwed up with a similar problem.

First of all it is a UI design question Which is the best design practice for edit data in RIA, for example in Flex or Silverlight? I would like to show customer's details, but there will be an edit window, than the datas of customer will be editable. I would like to show a new form where the data can be edited. What is the simplest way to show this form. I can make my ui tabbed, so I can open the form in a new tab, or I can open the form in a popup/modal dialog (Save-cancel). Maybe I can use in line editing. What is the most user friendly solution in a Silverlight or Flex GUI? What is your opinion?

I have a particular problem where I normally would use a db and php for back end but in this case I cant. its a small app that would consist of 4 tables category, price, product, and product_association. the product_association would store which category and type the products are associated with. so as an example if you have cars. you might have off road as the category the cost would be 20-25k could be suv. now a product can belong to more then one category but only one price. trying to figure what the best way to simulate a relational database with in flash. thinking objects, arrays, how to do the relationships.

I've always used this way to refer to variables on my document class

MovieClip(root).variablename
But that complicates things because I would need to extend my class as a displayObject and then add it to the displaylist to be able to use "MovieClip(root)" to access the variables in my document class.. as long as variables in my document class are set out as public variables..

I didn't realise you could refer to variables on the document class by just using something like:

documentclassname.variablename
With the the variable on the document class as "public static var". This solves a lot of problems.. as now I do not need to keep adding objects to the displaylist to get access to the document class variables..

Now.. My question is..Since I want to access most of my variables on my document class.. I would need to set them all to "public static var".. Would setting 100 or so variables to "public static var".. have any disadvantages? Like performance issues... Or anything else which may make it not be as efficent if I were to keep them simply as "public var" and use "MovieClip(root).variable" to access them?

I'm trying to practice making a simple video phone app so I'm trying to make a program to send a video and recieve a video using Cirrus from Adobe. I'm having trouble recieving the stream though. Here is the cod that I'm using:

Inside of the getVideoReveiver() function I'm getting the flag to go off from writeText("flag") then I get and output in the text box of:

NetStream.Play.Reset
NetStream.Play.Start

from the netStreamHandler, but the video never shows up in the receiving video element.I'm running this is two different videos of the same computer and taking the nearID from one stream and pasting it into the textInput theirID. I'm not sure what to try next?

Using the for loop i create many buttons and add events to them;

I need to know which button is pressed, so i use the (tricky) unprofessional methode: event.target.name.the question is; how can I know which button is pressed, using a custom event, this custom event should pass some vars to the called function, including the j var (from the loop)actually I tried setting a custom event using the example at the noponies accordion menue class, but it's so complicated to get working.

I've landed a project which is centered around building a custom video player with some special functionality (so I can't just use the default Flash video player, unfortunately). I have two small 'problems' in the sense that I could probably solve them myself, but I'd like some input on best practice for solving them: (The project is for Flash Player 10 and the video is intended to run inside a browser.)

Problem 1: Toggling between normal / fullscreen playback Ok, so my custom video player needs to be able to toggle between fullscreen and normal embedded-in-webpage player size. How does fullscreen toggling currently work in AS3 -is there a specific AS3 method for fullscreening a specified video object in the swf (without stretching the video player UI overlay), and if so, does it automatically black out the background if the screen format doesn't match the video format? - or do I need to download a class for this?

Problem 2: Positioning video player UI when going fullscreen As opposed to YouTube, I want the player UI to still show up when the video is toggled to fullscreen mode - but as mentioned above, I don't want to stretch its size along with the video. So is there a best practice for repositioning the video player UI to the vertical bottom and horizontal center of the screen when the user clicks full screen? I'm not entirely familiar with what happens to the Flash stage when it goes full screen, How to deal with not knowing the coordinates of the vertical bottom/horizontal center when screens have different ratios and resolutions?

Actionscript 3 :: Flash CS5 Displaying Different "screens" On The Stage As Movieclips?

Taking this thread to the next level and now making a Main.as class to display different "screens" of my game.For right now I only have 1 screen called ControlPanel, but this will eventually have multiple levels (each level will be a separate screen) and a level selection screen, etc. added. So at this point I'm losing control over how to give things access to the stage (in other words... it's getting really thick with multiple levels and this noob's brain is being overloaded lol).

To start off, I took all of my graphics that were on the stage by default (buttons, lights, meters, score text, etc.) and created a new symbol (MovieClip) that I called ControlPanel and checked off "Export for ActionScript" with a class name of ControlPanel. So now my games fla stage is black and I made it's document class Main.as. which looks like this:

Running this worked perfectly in that my Control Panel screen popped right onto the screen. Of course all the buttons didn't work yet but that is the next step. So I modified my old Game.as to now be called ControlPanel and read like so:

private var _player:Player;[code]...........

this is a hodgepodge of ideas torn between the docRef and the View idea. I need to have access to the stage for my mouse and keyboard listeners, but then I also need access to the buttons in the ControlPanelView symbol. Do I need to pass both the view and the docRef here? How to I maintain access to the stage and the ControlPanelView graphic?

I m trying to make sense of how to load a swf into a parent MovieClip and allow them to communicate.I ve attached two zip files � one which works fine and the other doesn�t. Unfortunately (for me), the one which doesn�t work is closer to my current project.I need to load movieclips into the parent movieclip. The parent movieclip has controls which rely on values parsed from the child movieclip.In the parent movieclips I wait until the loading is complete and so the values should be passed. However, the values aren�t passed unless I use a button (or timer), to pass the values (see the working exampes).The code which doesn�t work is:

I want to test mc animations without having to hit F12 to see if they work correctly. For instance, if I have an animation movieclip and then I make another movieclip and drop that aforementioned movieclip within, and animate [via the timeline or library preview] I'm unable to see on-the-fly what my animation looks like... it only shows the top most nest, unless I F12 it.

So if I have a character blinking eyes (one movieclip) and then I create another movie clip of the face, and put that aforementioned movieclip within, the preview animation within the library does not show how it'll be viewed when F12'n it.,,,, it'd be great to see your animations on the fly.

why does a MC inside another MC have different _x and _y values than the main timeline?What I am trying to do right now is animate a MC inside another MC then get the main MC holding everything to move where that new MC ended animating at (it's part of a game I'm making.)

I know it's confusing but Flash shows the cursors current X and Y in the info panel, which is the same as the main timeline. Yet inside the movieclip, an x of 76 and a y of 277 on the timeline is -195 and -30.9 (respectively) inside the MC.How do I fix it so I can get the _x and _y values to match up so I can tell the main MC to reposition itself to the new X and Y (of the inside MC)

I have a movieclip called mapWindow, inside mapWindow are dynamically created movieclips of various sizes. The movieclips inside the mapWindow don't take up the entire space of the mapWindow and thus I use a startDrag on the mapWindow upon detection of a mouse press. The problem is, I don't want the start drag to start if the mouse is detected over any of the child movieclips inside mapWindow.

I have a few ideas of how to proceed, but I'm not sure how to reference all child movieclips of a particular movieclip - or something along those lines.

It would be easy to use the hittest function if I knew how to reference all the movieclips I need to, but alas...

I'm using flash MX 2004 Professional. What im trying to is the following: I have 9 movie clips, each has a "closed" and "open" state. Basically, when I click no.1 I want it to animate open, and then, when I click no.2, it must first check if any of the other clips are in their "open" state and if so, close them.
