AS3 :: Flash - Setting Dynamic TextField.text From A Parent MovieClip?

I have a MovieClip that has a Dynamic TextField: let's call the instance of the field txtName. I want to set the text field on the fly for txtName, so I add a little ActionScript (3!) that does it nice and easily: txtName.text = "Foo";reat. Now why isn't it working when I try the same thing from a parent MovieClip which contains the MovieClip that has the dynamic text? Example:Child MovieClip with TextField ActionScript 3 in Frame #1:

i have a movieclip containing a dynamic text-field in it. When movieclip is stretched using transform manager, the text stretches. i am developing a component. Moreover,Event.Resize can not be used as Event.Resize is the Stage event. it does not work for movie-clips and sprite.Putting it in Event. Enter Frame works but that hangs the whole CMS when this technique is used.
I'm missing something obvious, but after looking over the same line of code and settings over and over and not being able to find a solution, I thought it better to just ask on the off chance that it'd be an easily resolvable problem. I've tried googling it, but end up with basic tutorials on how to use dynamic text in flash, which just go over what I'm doing already.
The problem is I have a text field in a movieclip. The text field is set to dynamic text, embedding is set on the characters I need, it's instance name is set to "val", it contains the text string "100%". The text field is contained within the movieclip called "uihp". The linkage on this movie clip is turned on, and has the name "uihp". I can attach the movieclip fine, and it is visible. The problem occurs when I attempt to change the text string. I use the following line to attempt to do that:
uihp.val.text = Math.floor(hp)+"%"; I have tried changing it to the string to "one" instead, but the same problem occurs: The text field doesn't display any text, and the previously present text "100%" vanishes, leaving nothing in the text field's place.
Setting the text field's var value to "test" and using uihp.test = "test" gives the same result as using the above method. I know I'm probably missing something obvious, but it feels stupid to waste so much time over this one aspect of an almost finished project if it could be just a simple thing I'm missing.
I have another post on here today about trying to set a textfield's text in AS2. I have been working on this problem all day. I am beginning to wonder if it is due to the fact that the fla was authored with CS4, maybe even CS3 and now I am trying to use it in CS5.5

Any way to optimize this?Long version:For a video player I'm working on, I've rewriting a bunch of code I've written in the past and optimizing where I can, and I've noticed something a bit strange.I have a time readout (the typical "00:00 / 01:00" thing) that I'm updating every frame, and it seems to be gobbling up FPS (I'm using mrdoob's great little Stats class for monitoring).The thread to make the call is a bit heavy -- involving a dispatched custom event from the FLVPlayer class (with the current netStream.time as a property) onEnterFrame, which is passed up 2 parents and then back down via a function call -- but I've isolated each step along the way and everything is totally fine (running at or close to 30fps) right up until that very last call where I set the TextField.text property, which results in about a 10fps drop.
If I comment out the setting of TextField.text it runs great, but even if I set it to something arbitrary (like currentTime.text = "0") -- bypassing the reformatting math -- it just tanks.Anyway, anyone know if there's something I can do about this? I've considered using a Timer set to 100m instead of onEnterFrame, but I actually assumed the overhead would come from the dispatching of and listening to the event as well as the reformatting of the time, but *not* the very last step of setting the .text property, which is something I can't avoid whether I use a Timer or onEnterFrame.
I've got a number of related projects set up in Flash Builder. Each project gets its graphical assets from an exported SWC file (or multiple SWC files.) This works fine, but I wanted to create a shared project that contains stuff used across all projects. The first item in there is a screen with a number of clips containing dynamic text fields on them. This screen (and associated assets) are exported to a SWC and then I have written code in the shared project to add functionality to the screen and buttons. I'm using 2 fonts, both are embedded.
Both show up just fine in my test harness, but when I link the shared SWC and src folder (which is required in order to use this code/assets in the other projects) the textfields blank out if I try to set their text properties. If I leave the default text (set in the FLA) it shows up, and the static text fields in the FLA also show up, it's only when I set the text property.
I've tried a number of combinations, including removing embedding, exporting for ActionScript, setting all textfields in the shared project to dynamic, all with no luck. The main project does have the same font embedded, and I've checked that the same glyphs are selected in both the main and shared projects. I realize this is a rather complicated setup, but I have yet to find a workflow to allow a designer and developer to work on large projects that is better (but I'd love to hear one!)
i have a textField wherein i uses embedded fonts, the problem is when i change its size and i do not set the SAME scaleX and scaleY value, it seems to compress the letters inside it when i make it smaller, and stretch the text when i make it bigger... i tried using width and height values (instead of scaleX and scaleY but its the same result)... it seems that the embedded fonts are maintaining some kind of aspect ratio or whatever, and again this only happens when embedFonts is set to true
I am a newbie in Flash CS3. How to resize the width of of a movie clip according to the size the size of dynamic text inside it. I did it by creating a text field 'myText' and then converted it to a MovieClip symbol and named the MovieClip as myClip. The text in myText is assigned at run-time and its width changes according to the text.
I did it as follows:- myClip.myText.selectable = false; myClip.mouseChildren = false; myClip.useHandCursor = true; myClip.buttonMode = true; myClip.myText.width = myClip.myText.textWidth + 5;
On doing this I find the clickable area changes according to the size of the text field but the text field doesn't appear at all.
how can i make a movieclip and a textfield to resize to the content of the text in the textfield? I mean, if I have a textfield with 3 letters font name XXX and then the content of the field change, how can i resize te textfield so the text dont autoadjust to the 3 letter space?
im building this interface in FLASH CS5, where i want to place a digital clock, i created a MovieClip InstanceName "RELOJ" in that MovieClip i have two layers, one with two Text Fields that are going to display Time and the other the Date, and on the other layer is the actionscript (AS3) of the whole clock and date.ok, now i place that movieclip on my Main TimeLine, i play the swf but i dont see the clock working.I have tried placing an Actions layer on my main timeline and writing "RELOJ.play()" but nothing... I'm having difficulty setting the text of a dynamic text field when using an if statementI have a gallery and thumbnails, which gives each image a picNum, ie 1, 2 etc;When I click on the thumbnails, it sets the picNum accordingly.What I want to do is set the caption depending upon my picNum, so I set a function to change the caption depending upon the picNum that is called when the thumbnail is clicked. When a user enters a number into the page count it makes a calculation and places the outcome into the dynamic textfield. This textfield is for the individual price.All of this so far works. What I want to do now is create another dynamic textfield for the total. So the individual price is multiplied by the quantity and this result is put in the new dynamic text field. I have the code for that working but here is where it gets tricky (for me anyway).The total price is to start off invisible. When I roll over the individual price the total price is to appear (For a test lets just say when I roll over an area the total price appears).To stop cursor flickering this should be done inside a movieclip. So... I have create a movieclip and placed a dynamic textfield inside it. They all have instance names BUT how do I reference it in script?I need to tell the resulting calculation to be placed inside the textfield which is inside the movieclip. If it isn't inside a movie clip I can do it. But how to I reference it when inside one?
I'm creating an XML-driven pie chart in AS3 with 2 text boxes in each pie slice. Both text fields are dynamic in the sense that they are populated by the XML doc and then told where to place themselves in the AS3. I've got them both using the same x and y position to place themselves at the moment (which of course puts them right one top of each other), but I'd like to make one of the fields (which acts like a label or a title to the larger number and % text field) place itself in a particular spot around the other text field. The result I'm looking for is to have the smaller "title" text field appear approximately 5 pixels above and left-justified to the larger "percentage" field.
Anyway, here are two sections of code that I've currently got. The first chunk, for the Tags portion, sets the position for the "percentage" text field using a good old x and y method. The second chunk, for Titles, is setting the position for the smaller "title" text.

I've a flash template and the variables are editable in XML files. I need to define a gradient on dynamic text, Here's the code in the flash actionscript that i think it's linking to xml:

anyone has ideas for defining a linear gradient?? i've researched and try somethings but this is really not my field, and I seem to keep failing.
I'm trying to create a dynamic text field which displays the first number contained in an array named _root.arr. I set var to "_root.arr[0]" to catch the first number in the array. Unfortunately it doesn't work because it shows just a blank text field.
I've also noticed that if I just set var to "_root.arr" all the numbers contained in the array will be displayed separeted by a comma.
So, how can I just display the first number in the array?
When using dynamic text and you set the text alignment to "align right", the text is supposed to flow right to left correct? With my code below I can't seem to get this to happen. All my text is flowing left to right.

I'm updating an old Flash file and I'm pulling some dynamic text into a text box, but I'm having a really, really hard time trying to get it to resize the width so it always fills the box, which is 170 wide.
How can a set the image size in the above code. I've tried inserting width and height parameters just after the image's path but an error is thrown. I would like for the image's width to be as wide as the dynmic text infoBox.informationText

I have 8 dynamic text boxes in my scene. What I need to accomplish is setting the value of the text in the text boxes to "Ready". The number of dynamic text boxes that need to have their value set to "Ready" is based on the variable "myVar1". Which dynamic text box to begin with is based on the variable "myVar2". In the scenario below mytextbox4, mytextbox5, and mytextbox6 should all be displaying "Ready" when done.
I'm having trouble getting an external.swf to show dynamic text in the parent swf. When I run the external swf by itself the text shows up fine, but when I try to load it into another swf using the MovieClipLoader the dynamic text doesn't show up.
my dynamic text is not appearing on parent swf. but 100% working on self swf.i used trace to output the value and it works both on parent and child swf.
I have a problem with loading text from a *.txt file into a dynamic textfield which is located in a movieclip in another movieclip. It seems it can't find the textfield because it is in movieclips. I know I shouldn't work with the '_root' command but in my project it doesn't matter. Also tried making '_root' globalmain to 'this'. But that still doesn't do the trick.

I have a dynamic textfield that loads text from a txt file. The content of the txt file will be modified daily by the client.What i need is that if there is too much text in the txt file, the dynamic textfield resizes (and not only with autosize because the text can be really long).[code]it doesnt look very good but it works. The only problem is that if I have a really long text the maxsizeY doesnt work fine.

Sorry) Funny behaviour...I'm trying to load an external MC containing dynamic text (MC-Clip.swf) to a MC empty holder (MCimport) within my main/parent movie. This piece of AS is attached to a button (to call the dyn. txt clip):

With this, the dynamic text gets loaded indeed... but Fullscreen into the parent movie, and not into MCimport (where it should be). Now... I don't understand why, but the thing is that if MC-Clip.swf contains just static text (and change accordingly the text properties to static text in the holder MC), it gets loaded in the right place (MCimport) within the main/parent movie. (?!??!) And this is the piece of AS attached to the button (to call the MC containing the static txt):
