AS3 :: Flash - Get All Subclasses Of A Class?
Sep 1, 2011
This is a little odd but I need to know all subclasses of a specific class. So let's say I have the base class called Shape and 3 subclasses (Circle, Triangle and Rectangle) that implement it. I would like something like this :
public function getSubclasses(aClass : Class) : Vector.<Class>
{
//???
}
that returns a vector containing Circle, Triangle and Rectangle.I unfortunately cannot count on the fact that each subclass be instanciated at least once before that function is called.t the moment I need to manually add the classes to a list but this is error prone (if I forget) and also not as versatile as the function proposed above would be (since I would need to make a new list for every class I want the subclasses of).

I'm trying to access a MovieClip object in a SuperClass from a SubClass. The only way I can tell this is possible is through an event dispatch, but I'm dealing with a preloader and a loaded external SWF. So I can't make an instance of the "not yet loaded" classes because I'll get errors. Furthermore, the objects in both SWF need to be controlled in sync.

I want to create a movieclip class that subclasses another movieclip class and inherits all its properties (rather than having to rely on the include statement). In my project I'm using:An abstract parent class that extends a movieClip: "infantryDroid".[code]However everytime I try this, flash acts as though nothing was imported from the parent movieclip class.If I was to try the above code I would get the message that _root and speed (which were defined in the parent class) "are undefined".

Trying to find a straight answer for this. I am going to be creating some sub classes in actionscript 3. I was wanting to know if it is possible to override the parent class. If so, do I need to put a override assigner on the parent class method or what.

In the below example, stage is always null. If I move the listener for enterframe to TestSubClass, it obviously works OK (even if the added function remains in TestClass?) - but why can't I detect stage in TestClass and reuse that code for all classes that extend it?
Some code:
Code:
// ParentClass
var testClass:TestSubClass = new TestSubClass();
this.addChild(testClass);

I've been having trouble with scope in subclasses, where variables that I would like to be local to each instance of a class are instead global. For example:
Code:
class Prototype extends MovieClip {
//Various functions all clips have access to
}
class Ship extends Prototype {
[code]....
I've found that if I instantiate more than one ship, the hitboxes array is populated with clips from every instance of the class, instead of staying local to each instance as I'd like. Is this because I'm attaching them with a constructor?

how subclasses, instances, and inheritance work. The below code isn't actual project code, it's theoretical code, generalized to a simplistic level so that we can talk about the big issues. I have animals_app.fla, with a "Dog" class MC and a "Cat" class MC. Both "Dog" and "Cat" are subclasses of "Animals"; animals_app.fla uses document class "Main".
Intuitively,I think Animals should declare that every subclass should have some animalSpecies ,and each subclass will define the value of its own animalSpecies. It wouldn't make sense for Animals to provide any default value, because it will always be different per subclass.Is this correct?
I had tried out some code similar to that below, and was perplexed because it seemed like whenever a subclass tried to define a value for its own animalSpecies variable, it was actually changing the value of the variable in the Animal class, but that's not what I want. How do I rewrite this code so that each subclass defines the values of variables it inherits from its superclass, without altering the superclass? And how would I define the value of variables for each instance of a class, so that I'm only changing the values of that instance, without altering the subclass?
Animals.as
package
{import flash.display.MovieClip;[code]..........
Also, conventionally, what should be in my Main class? Only the addChild code which attaches MCs to the stage? Or should the values of variables be defined in Main? What am I missing?I recently read Foundation Game Design with Flash and didn't feel like the explanation was sufficient.

I'm trying to create a base class for components by extending Group in Flex 4, but I can't seem to define the layout through MXML. Any time I try to move the definition to a subclass of my base component, I get the following error:
Error: Could not resolve <s:layout> to a component implementation.
Judging by that error, it seems that some magic from the framework's side goes into assigning it for a Group and thus the compiler fails when trying to assign it for any other classes. Does anyone know how this is supposed to work? how to allow me to define it in subclasses?

I'm new to Flash AS3. I started making a game and I am a bit confused. Let's assume that I want to create a game that has multiple levels/modes, how can I do this in an object orientated way?
When i create games in other languages e.g. XNA C#, i create a separate class then create an object of that class within the main class and run the game based on a simple statement.

If I have three classes:
public class Example {
public function Example () {

You can see that the two last classes extend the first one, and both have the 'variable' property. In case that I have an instance of Example and I am sure it is also an ExtendedExample OR AnotherExtendedExample instance, is there some way to access the 'variable' property? Something like
function functionThatReceivesAnExtendedExample (ex:Example):void {
if(some condition that I may need) {

Assume I know practically nothing about AS3! I'm using Flash Pro CS5. I'm trying to reassociate a flash file I've been given with its external assets and classes. In the library I have a movieclip with linkage to a class called 'StaticMap' using the base class 'flash.display.MovieClip'. am I missing a custom class file called 'StaticMap.as' that was originally located in the same folder as the fla, or is this a generic class accessible to all movieClips from within Flash?

Is there a way to generate an instance of a class that implements an interface based on the name of the class?
I am trying:
var ClassReference:Object = getDefinitionByName("movement.OuterSpaceMovement") as IMovement;
var m:IMovement = new ClassReference as IMovement;
trace("startup..." + m);
-But I am getting an error message ReferenceError: Error #1065 (OuterSpaceMovement) not defined.
I have several classes that implement the same interface (IMovement) but I need to be able to generate new instances of these classes and then pass these instances as a datatype (IMovement datatype) to other classes...
So then I tried:
var ClassReference:Class = getDefinitionByName("OuterSpaceMovement") as Class;
var m:IMovement = new ClassReference() as IMovement;
and this doesn't seem to work...but the following
var m:IMovement = new OuterSpaceMovement();

Using Flash CS5 Professional I have created a symbol, dragged it onto the stage, and given it an instance name of GreenLight1. If I want to make this visible from the document class, I can simply do the GreenLight1.visible=true; and poof it's good to go when I test the file. As long as I stay in the document class I am good to go, but now I'm trying to move to another class and hitting ALL kinds of trouble just trying to get Flash to allow me to access this simple object. All I am looking to do is have this GreenLight1 go invisible (visible=false) when a certain condition occurs in this new class and Flash just won't let me access GreenLight1 at all. Things I've tried thus far:
stage is passed to the class and is referenced by _stage and is working just fine when I do _stage.addchild or anything like that. So I have tried "_stage.GreenLight1.visible=false;" and I get "ReferenceError: Error #1069: Property GreenLight1 not found on flash.display.Stage and there is no default value." My document class extends Sprite, so I figured I'd try the root function. So I tried "Sprite(root).GreenLight1.visible=false;" and I get "1119: Access of possibly undefined property GreenLight1 through a reference with static type flash.display:Sprite." I tried to create the Resource class as described therein. To which I came across the same problem that I started with in that it doesn't know what GreenLight1 is to begin with so I got "1120: Access of undefined property GreenLight1." Here is my code for Resource.as (am I supposed to pass something to this class from the document class?)

I'm trying to load a RSL library into a flash animation developed with Flash CS5 IDE, that extends a custom class and implements an interface. I have reduced the problem to the simplest setup and find that I can have my main class extend another class or implement an interface, but not do both at the same time if I want to load an RSL.I have a very simple class to extend:
import flash.display.Sprite;
public class MySprite extends Sprite
{[ code]...........
but if I want both I get the VerifyError: Error #1014 with MySprite not found and ReferenceError: Error #1065.

I have this Fla which contains a symbol that is linkaged to a certain class that is in my project. That class inherites a base class named CMovieClip which resides in one of the libraries that is in the class path (and inherites from MovieClip).Of some reason, every change that I do in the base class doesn't seem to influence the resulting linkaged class, much as if this library is cached somewhere that I can't feagure out.I tried to create the same conditions in a separate Fla but it does not repeat the issue.I tried to duplicate the symbol but the issue isn't solved that way.

I've been searching around trying to work this out for a while now. There's been various ideas popping up, like dispatchEvent etc but nothing that seems to be a clear, simple way of doing this.What I'm trying to do is call a function from a class seperate (but in the same folder as) my document class.Specifically, I want to 'spawn' an object and run a function within that object's class from my Main.as.The snippet I have at the moment is as follows;

var object:class_Object = new class_Object();
object.spawn();

I'm just now learning the new object oriented way of scripting. It's been a wild ride, but I've finally learned how to keep script off my frames (very hard coming from as2).Here's my problem:
I have a TextField on the stage in my main .fla file named loadPercent.
I'm loading a jpg with preLoad.as and displaying the bytes loaded in loadPercent.
I can access my loadPercent TextField from my MainClass
but I can't access it from preLoad.as
the document class is MainClass.as
Code:
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;[code]....
I get three '#1120 access of undefined propery' errors for each time i try to access loadPercent.
a few basic questions: 1. all my files are in a folder in my documents, not in the flash directory, is this bad? I've seen people using com.whatever etc.
2. my main .fla file does not share the same name as my MainClass.as (it's not named MainClass.fla) Is that a problem?
I'm assuming these are inconsequential because my code seems to work up to a certain point.

I have trace statements in eveything and from this I know the despatcher in TellAllModeChangeToStudent is being called.The problem is that the listener in the main.as is not calling the function exp.I cant see why and I dont know how to check if the listener is actually seeing the dispatch event?

I understand it's probably best practice to name your custom classes differently than the built-in AS3.0 classes; however, what kind of problems could I run into if I don't?Specifically, I have a class which, ideally I want to name DataProvider. But, as you know, there is already a DataProvider class on the Flash platform (used for list-based components and such).Now, I don't think I'll ever use BOTH of those classes, so I'm assuming as long as I reference the correct DataProvider class in my import statements I should be ok?What if I DO need to use both, is that even possible?
