ActionScript 2.0 :: Combining Complex Buttons And External SWF Transitions?
Jul 19, 2005
I have made a complex button with the help of warhero's tutorial. The onRelease event of this script opens a URL when clicked. What I need is to have the onRelease event of this script load an external movie into a container mc based on Voetsjoeba's Transitions tute.I thought I'd try combining the if/else statement from Voetsjoeba into the complex button script, but this does not work. Can someone tell me how to combine these scripts?
I have just completed the "Transitions Between External SWFs" tutorial and I'm now I'm at the stage of altering a few things in there to suit my needs. But I've run into a problem... For my buttons, instead of "Button" symbols, I want to use "Movie Clip" symbols - reason being is that I've got some specially animated Movie Clip buttons that I wish to use.
To get this... err "working"... with my Movie Clip buttons I have needed to use "_root." when referencing to the container Movie Clip. Now that works to an extent, but for some reason each button plays only "red.swf" even when there is no mention of it in the ActionScript and is instructed to play "blue" for example ("red.swf" happens to be the first appearing movie). Normal method with Button - works fine!
Code: on (release) { if (_root.currMovie == undefined) { _root.currMovie = "red"; container.loadMovie(" [Code] .....
I can handle animation but am somehow ignorant about ActionScript as my knowledge of Flash goes back to the Tell target actions...I've been playing around with 2 tutorials I've found on Kirupa (see links below) in order to build a text based navigation:
My first level is made of MC buttons. All working great when adding the script indicated in the first tutorial. From there, I would like to be able to load external SWFs when clicking on one of those first level buttons and in order to do so I added the script from the second tutorial (Transitions Between External SWFs)
Doing so, I was told I could only add that script on button symbols which is unfortunately i not an option at this point. how can I launch external SWFs that would allow transitions from those MC symbols?
[FMX04]complex rollover button and transition scripton RollOver/RollOut Effects with the Transitions Between External SWFs tutorial. For some reason I cant seem to get the buttons to function properly. I keep getting a mouse over error Im sure its something really small that Im overlooking.
//all this code is inside the complex button so you can stick as many as you want //on the stage and all will work.. they all will have this code in it.. stop(); // stop the movie clip from playing (stop button from growing, we want that when the mouse rolls over only
I have a problem with buttons and transitions.I have two buttons onstage (they're inside a movie clip) inside the movie, on the button one I have the following code:
on (release) { if (_root.externaltwo._currentframe == 7) { _root.externaltwo.gotoAndPlay(8);[code]....
I have similar code on button two and this does indeed make the buttons move into place as required. My problem is this, I need to load in external swf files into an empty movie clip on the main stage called container. These External SWF files have transitions and this is where my problem is. If I place a normal button on the stage it works but not if the button is inside a movie clip and has actions applied as above. The code next is what I have believe should also be placed on the button to make swf transition one load in.
on (release) { if (_root.currMovie == undefined) { _root.currMovie = "externalone";[code].....
Obviously a similar code would be placed on button two so the transitions could take place.I am uploading my file so you can see exactly what I am talking about. Also in this file will be a folder containg a version that works but without the buttons moving up and down which is the effect I wish to have
I have a problem with buttons and transitions and it is similar to a problem I had a couple of days ago that I posted and that was sorted out. I have two buttons onstage (they're inside a movie clip) inside the movie, on the button one I have the following

I would like an animation to play (of the words being scribbled out) and when you mouseout, it goes back to normal. On page click, I wanted the link to change colour so that you would know which page you were on.I have created a frame by frame animation of the words being scribbled out, but I don't know what to do with the animation!How do I insert it into my html? Do I need to use actionscript in flash?
I'm writing code for a website (for the first time) using Flash CS4 AS3 and am hoping someone out there can answer a simple question for me. I have multiple buttons on the stage that point to different areas of the timeline. All of the simple buttons work fine.he problem that I'm having is with the complex buttons (that have a movie clip in them) only work one time and then die. They still animate, but don't function after the first use...Why?! I've googled for days and am baffled to my wits end.I'm talking about and be able to point me in some direction. I've tried several different things from different sites, so the code is a little funny right now. The buttons that don't work are 'mybutton, pic1, and entrypic1.' Everything is labeled correctly in the properties manager and the code is below:
stop(); function setupEvents() { pic1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, mouseDownHandler1);
I have completely hit a wall. Here's what I'm after. I have two sets of radio buttons, each of which controls what loaded swf appears on stage. Then, depending on which button is clicked in group one and which button is clicked in group two, a third swf appears. I can access the value of each radio button, and I'm passing it into a variable (I think - the trace command works) but when I drop it all together into an if/else statement, no data is passed.
Here's the code: //printArea is a movie clip on stage, which has dynamic mc's attached via code var thisFront; //function for what happens when fronts radio buttons clicked frontListener = new Object(); frontListener.click = function(evt) { [Code] .....
In the last line, I want the function to go to a frame in the timeline, not to an outside URL. Shouldn't I just be able to change it to this? (85 is the frame number)
I've made a pretty complex button thats actually a drop down menu. So when you mouse over the button, it opens the drop down menu, but the actual button is also clickable. The problem comes in when I copy the button like 4 times. I can make the main button go to different links, but everything inside the button,i.e. the drop down links, changes across all copies whenever I modify one. How do I go about making each button a different separate button so that I can modify each one individually?
How do you code simple buttons and complex buttons that show they are on or have been activated? I want my interface to be able to tell my users that they are in a specific area by highlighting the button on my menus. (Just like the navigation menu for [URL]).
On the main timeline I have a movie clip ("Sound Full") on it. The movie clip is being used as a complex rollover button for "revealing" a full sound interface. When the mouse rolls over, the word "Sound" fades out and the panel appears. When rolled off, of course it goes in reverse. I've seen it done in many places...including www.iso50.com.
Anyway, on the timeline for "Sound Full", I have three layers being used for the following...
1) Actions 2) An instance of a graphic symbol ("Sound Text") 3) An instance of a movie clip symbol ("Sound Player)
The Actions are a few lines of code to rewind or play based on whether or not the mouse is over the area or not (as learned directly from [url] And for the instances, I just used motion tweens to have "Sound Text" fading out as "Sound Player" fades in. It's like 5 frames in all. Very quick effect.
The timeline for "Sound Player" is only one frame. Each piece of the player has its own layer (play button, stop button, etc.) and the top layer (also reserved for Actions) has a single line of actionscript where I have written:
[code]...
The problem is that when I test the whole movie...the rollover effects works beautifully, but the buttons in the interface aren't clickable or working at all. I discovered that if I simply tested "Sound Player" by itself...it works perfectly, except there's obviously no rollover effect since "Sound Player" is nested inside of the movie "Sound Full" which is what does the effect.
Does this make sense? Hopefully it does. Anyway, so my question is...
1) Am I missing a basic fundamental rule of Flash in order to make it run smoothly?
2) Is the "tweening" of "Sound Player" possibly messing it up? (Remember, I noticed that when the include line for the external actionscript file was in the same frame as the indiv. player buttons it worked fine.
3) Do you need to see the .fla file to help me out?
I have been trying to figure out this problem for a couple days. I made an animation using actionscript 3.0 and the GreenSock TweenLite to load images in through XML in flash. When you click the button (btn1) to go to the next image, it animates in perfectly, but since I am multiplying 140 each time, if I click btn1 while the image is transitioning in, it adds another 140 to that value and the next image goes off the screen. Think of it as a slot machine effect, witch is pretty much what it looks like. The images load in as if they're on a reel, vertically. I would like to know how to set a limit so that instead of adding 140 to the value, it goes to the next image instead, and centers it perfectly in the mask I have set up. Do you guys get what I am trying to do? If not, I can zip the folder up and attach it here, but it's a project for a client so I'm a bit weary.
Again, quick summary: btn1, if clicked more than once during the span of the image transitioning in (through XML and gs.tweenlite), the image gets 140 added to its positional value and goes off the screen.
Code: import gs.TweenLite; var id:int=0; var list:XMLList; var xmlLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
I would like to play out a movie that has been loaded (if it has been loaded) when another button is clicked.
It is my understanding, I can do this by adding AS to the SWF file at the point I want to play it out (labeled "init_out") and variables to my base file.
Summary: btn_GD btn_IL btn_CN
btn_CN plays a transitional animation ("init_in") which changes the base of the scene.
Once btn_GD or btn_IL has been clicked btn_CN needs to play ("init_out") in an external swf to return the scene so they can play their movies, which are also external.
My second problem is (on a different button), I have a loaded Movie Clip which unloads itself, but once it is unloaded I would like it to show another (internal) and/or a static page.
This is a transitional animation which plays and it does not go to another scene, but shows a different "flat" of the file which contains buttons returning one back to the main scene.
Though it's exeternal I'm not opposed to having that movieclip remain up as long as I'd be able to have it click and return back to the main menu section.
Summary: btn_CT needs to both load an external SWF, unload said SWF, and arrive at mc_CT.
[URL]theres the link for the turorial. my questions is, how can i use movieclips instead of using buttons. i thought it would be simple enough to create a movieclip, add the on release as to it and done, but it doesn't work. i also converted the file to flash 8 btw.
Is there an updated version to this tutorial? I'm specifically trying to apply the technique, but using a tween engine (tweenlite) as well as MovieClipLoader.Or perhaps there's a newer, more efficient way to load swf's with transitions?
I read the tutorial about transitions between external swfs and started implementing it! So as a good and ordonate guy that I am, I put the index.html in the root, created a style folder for the style and a folder for the swfs. I was struggling about one hour to find out why it wouldn't work, to find out that if I move the html inside with the swfs, being in the same directory, it worked fine!
I am using Flash CS3 AS2 I have a main movie into which several external swfs are loaded. Two of these swfs are left_menu and middle_menu. I would like these to be able to talk to each other. When the 'home' button is pressed on 'left menu' I would like 'middle_menu' to go to a certain frame and play out. I have had a look at the tutorial which differs a bit and I'm a little confused (very new to actionscript!). I have put on by 'home' button if 'left menu':
I've worked on this for a week with no success. I have a main index.swf with a nav menu loading external swfs into a movieclip for each section. I would like to simply fade out the loaded swfs into the new one, in the same moviclip. I don't know if this is possible because upon loading the new swf's they wipe away the loaded swf completely. I've tried
contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, loadProdComplete); event listeners to make the loaded swf fade after the new one is completed but same deal, the loaded swf is wiped clean and I can't get a fade transition between the two. My code:
[URL] for smooth transitions between externally loaded swf's. I've search for such an in depth tutorial all over the net and was unable to find any until I came across yours. I need to modify the code however to suit the need of the current site I am working on. My site contains background images ans a button loads an external swf in an empty movie clip ontop of these images. The cliemt would like the end user to have the option of collapsing the box that is laoded to allow the full backgroung image to be seen. I am having troubles modifying the script. Any suggestions? Here is the link to the website asit currently exists. [URL] The "x" that appears in the top right hand corner needs to collapse the box, preferribly with the same animation sequence.
I followed your tutorial on transitions. And its working really great. But...what if I want to link the content in the transition? I want to link it to an other swf. I tried to change the path but It's not working because im a beginner.
[URL]is there a way to instead of having an outro animation for your movieclip, make it reverse the whole timeline to the start and THEN load the next external swf? [URL]
Great tutorial, works excellent. My only issue is how to do this on multiple levels? I'm trying to get an external swf open within an external swf. I know this probably isn't necessary but it does keep the site easily managed and very dynamic. It works on the main swf, and if i test it on the the linked page it works as well, just not together. I orginally thought that maybe it was the conflicting container names/variables so I made sure to change those. Maybe the solution would be to use a common container?
Please download my sample fla here: [URL] (note, not all linked swf's are included, just enough to get the point across. The issue is with the sub-menu within "Information"). To see an online version: [URL]
I am using this scripting for my website. [URL] I have used it on other websites successfully, but the website I'm working on now is a little more complicated and the scripting is not working correctly.
Before I had simple buttons on the root level, but now I have complex rollover buttons in side movieclips playing on the root level. When I go to test the site in Flash 8, it works fine, but then when i publish the files and open it in a browser, it is not loading the external swfs into the main swf. All the files are in the same folder as the main swf and I am not using any other folders. attaching and transitioning of external swfs?
I am trying to convert the source in this tutorial from AS1 to AS3 [URL] i think i am doing good but i am missing something.the AS3 code is:
[AS] //Load Sec1 var requestDefSec1:URLRequest = new URLRequest("section1.swf"); var loadDefSec:Loader = new Loader(); loadDefSec.load(requestDefSec1);
