ActionScript 2.0 :: [FMX] Getting The First Letters From A String Of Words?
Jan 18, 2005
For a rather complex search function I need to get the first letter of each word entered into an input field. At first glance this may not seem like a big problem if every word is neatly seperated by a space. Although people can enter whatever they want into the field I only want to work with the words that start with a-z or A-Z. I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how I can determine if a character in the string falls into this selection.One of the possibilities is to use charCodeAt(), but that's rather rough. I can walk through the string using indexOf() but I may have trouble finding the next word if characters other than a space come into play. Say I have a string like: Super "big hamburger"notice the 'accidental' double space after super) What I want to get out of it is: Super big Hamburgerhich I later decrease to: s b h

I am making a game where random letters and words are generated into movieclips, thats the background. I built it using arial as my font, however I then decided to go with a fixed width font to make sizing the movieclips to the words much more straightforward. Yesterday this worked fine, the font i am using (Liberation Mono) is installed on my computer, all the textboxes which use this font have the character embedding on them, and I have not changed any of the movieclips, only non-relevant code. So I run it up again today and none of the words appear. Thinking it might be some code changes I made I go thourhg tracing out everything, only to find the wrds are being generated, and written to the textbox absolutely fine. I switch back to Arial just as a check and bang it works again.

I need to convert a many paged document into numbers.
logicly a=1, b=2, ..z=26 & 1=1, 2=2, etc.. the numbers of the letters need to be seperated by comma's
and the spaces between words must be replaced by dashes
so for example: "i am crazy for doing this" should look like this:
"9-1,13-3,18,1,26,25-6,15,18-4,15,9,14,7-20,8,9,19"
does anyone know of a script that will take up to 500 words per conversion, or does anyone know a application that will be able to do this? unlimited amount of words would even be better.

Need regular expression that will verify if all the letters in the word "cat" were also in the word "coating" in the proper sequence? So for the word "coating", the RegEx will test true for "cat" but false for "act".

I've made some code that loads a line from a text file as a string and puts it into a dynamic field. What I want to do is randomize the letters of the string, but I can't seem to find any functions that do so. Anyone have an idea as to how you do this?
Code:
var url:String = "test.txt";
var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();

I'm trying to take the letters I have in a string var, eg "EXAMPLE", and display them in a textField like so:[code]Maybe I'm trying to make it too complicated, but I can't seem to figure it out. I'm using the following code:[code]The textFeild shows nothing (the textField is coded correctly, as it shows regular strings).However, the trace shows it as:[code]I've got the textfield set large enough to accomodate the text.Is there a better way to split a string into individual letters, and then display them in a field one above the other?

I've searched high and low for a simple function that gives me all the possible combination of a set of characters with no avail. Anyone here got enough of a maths brain for this one? I want a function around the likes of this: possibleCombinations("abc"); which returns an array: "abc", "ab", "a", "cba", "cb", "c", "..." ETC You'd be doing me a hug favor as a deadline depends in the delivery of this code.

here's my string....
var shapeString:String = "Princess,Round,Radiant,Princess,Heart,Round,Radiant,Emerald,Radiant,Radiant,Pear";
I need to figure out how to return the the 3 items that occur most in the order of highest to lowest. In this example it would end up being.
newString = "Radient,Princess,Round";
I imagine I would use indexOf somehow but I am not going to know what pattern I am searching for in the string so it is just based on the items that end up in shapeString based on a bunch of selected elements.

Is it possible to split a string like "Lorem ispum dolor, sit amet. Howdy doody." into an array of words without commas and periods, in one operation?I've tried words:Array = startString.split(String.fromCharCode(32,44,46));i guess the reason my example doesn't work is because it searced for " ,." to split the string.

Algorithm to generate all possible letter combinations of given string down to 2 letters
Trying to create an Anagram solver in AS3, such as this one found here:
[URL]
I'm having a problem wrapping my brain around generating all possible letter combinations for the various lengths of strings. If I was only generating permutations for a fixed length, it wouldn't be such a problem for me... but I'm looking to reduce the length of the string and obtain all the possible permutations from the original set of letters for a string with a max length smaller than the original string. For example, say I want a string length of 2, yet I have a 3 letter string of "abc", the output would be: ab ac ba bc ca cb.
Ideally the algorithm would produce a complete list of possible combinations starting with the original string length, down to the smallest string length of 2. I have a feeling there is probably a small recursive algorithm to do this, but can't wrap my brain around it. I'm working in AS3.

I have a string provided to my flash file that I need to break into a max of 3 sentences(strings).
I have written some actionscript to break it up by set lengths, but I also need it to not break words up.
To test you can place the following code in a blank as2 file.
Code:
var personalMessage:String = "You got this far so we reckon that you could be curious enough to learn a little more, well contact you shortly to answer any questions you may have.";
_root.myArray = new Array();
_root.myArray = personalMessage.split("");

my objective is:
1.Read in a text file. e.g containing text like this, teacher/student/1/sn/2/3/4/5/9/f/tn/02/
2.pass it to a string.
3.then beable to extract different parts of the string and place them in different arrays.
The bit I dont know how to do is the extracting specific parts of the string? Is it possible to search for / and to treat what comes after it as a specific peice of information until the next / is read? Or perhaps there is a more efficient approach?

I'm trying to find a way to add to the front and back of a word in a string based on the letters it starts with.
For example if I had a string "I think http://www.facebook.com/ is better than http://twitter.com" it would look for the instance of "http://" and give me "I think <b>http://www.facebook.com/</b> is better than <b>http://twitter.com</b>"
