I'm using a RegExp that finds words with a hash in front such as #example .
If there is a link in a text with a hash like example.com/#about it comes to problems. So how to extend it to find only words that have also a space in front of the #? (E.g.: hello #world)

Is it possible to find words and then pass them as variables from a text field?
For example if I have the following text inside a text field inside my flash file:
"Playing soccer is fun"
Is it possible to somehow get those individual words and make 4 different variables out of them ?

I'm making a project in which I have a input/output text box. I'm trying to restrict the words that are able to be said in the input box, but I can't seem to figure out how I'd do that. I'd think that I'd use .replace, and possibly an if function which tells it that if a word used does not equal the allowed words, to replace it with something such as ###.

I have an input box and I want it to track if anywhere in the text box a certain word is typed then something happens. Here is what I got so far.
Code:
wordTracker = new Object();
wordTracker = function () {
if(txt_input.split == "word"){
trace("success");
}} Key.addListener(wordTracker);
But it doesn't work. An example of what I want to happen is for instance lets say the user enters this into the textbox "I like to type a word into documents" because the word "word" was typed in there it would trigger the trace action but it doesn't how do i get this to work?

For a rather complex search function I need to get the first letter of each word entered into an input field. At first glance this may not seem like a big problem if every word is neatly seperated by a space.
Although people can enter whatever they want into the field I only want to work with the words that start with a-z or A-Z.
I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how I can determine if a character in the string falls into this selection. One of the possibilities is to use charCodeAt(), but that's rather rough. I can walk through the string using indexOf() but I may have trouble finding the next word if characters other than a space come into play.

I'm planning to make a game that gives players the choice to search a word when selecting a character, and if that word is found, they get to play as them. I don't even have a clue what, where and how I am gonna put the list in the game for something to search it. I'll try to give an example:
A user puts "horse" into the input field, presses the "Search" button, and Flash searches the word "horse" in a list of maybe 30 or so words. If it returns no results, a message says, "keyword not found". If it is found, a picture of a horse comes up in the character preview box.

here's my string....
var shapeString:String = "Princess,Round,Radiant,Princess,Heart,Round,Radiant,Emerald,Radiant,Radiant,Pear";
I need to figure out how to return the the 3 items that occur most in the order of highest to lowest. In this example it would end up being.
newString = "Radient,Princess,Round";
I imagine I would use indexOf somehow but I am not going to know what pattern I am searching for in the string so it is just based on the items that end up in shapeString based on a bunch of selected elements.

Is it possible to split a string like "Lorem ispum dolor, sit amet. Howdy doody." into an array of words without commas and periods, in one operation?I've tried words:Array = startString.split(String.fromCharCode(32,44,46));i guess the reason my example doesn't work is because it searced for " ,." to split the string.

In Actionscript and Adobe Flex, I'm using a pattern and regexp (with the global flag) with the string.match method and it works how I'd like except when the match returns multiple occurrences of the same word in the text. In that case, all the matches for that word point only to the index for the first occurrence of that word. For example, if the text is "cat dog cat cat cow" and the pattern is a search for cat*, the match method returns an array of three occurrences of "cat", however, they all point to only the index of the first occurrence of cat when i use indexOf on a loop through the array. I'm assuming this is just how the string.match method is. I want to find the specific indices of every occurrence of a match, even if it is of a word that was already previously matched.
how the string.match method is and if so

I'm trying to isolate words entered by the user into an "Input Text" (command). In a function that executes every time a key is pressed, I set a string, "newTxt", to the text entered.[code]This works fine; I'm able to check the string "newTxt". However, this checks the entire command rather than one word. When I replace line 2 with:[code]it freezes. In theory, it should add every letter until it reaches a space or ends, right? Could anyone find my mistake? Also, how would I go about checking for the second word (after a space)?

How do I create an array of strings from a string, eg."hello world" would return ["hello", "world"]. This would need to take into account punctuation marks, etc.There's probably a great RegEx solution for this, I'm just not capable of finding it.

I have a string provided to my flash file that I need to break into a max of 3 sentences(strings).
I have written some actionscript to break it up by set lengths, but I also need it to not break words up.
To test you can place the following code in a blank as2 file.
Code:
var personalMessage:String = "You got this far so we reckon that you could be curious enough to learn a little more, well contact you shortly to answer any questions you may have.";
_root.myArray = new Array();
_root.myArray = personalMessage.split("");

my objective is:
1.Read in a text file. e.g containing text like this, teacher/student/1/sn/2/3/4/5/9/f/tn/02/
2.pass it to a string.
3.then beable to extract different parts of the string and place them in different arrays.
The bit I dont know how to do is the extracting specific parts of the string? Is it possible to search for / and to treat what comes after it as a specific peice of information until the next / is read? Or perhaps there is a more efficient approach?

i'm trying to write a function but with no luck. seems my brain capacity's limited the function will take two parameters: a term to search for, and a string to be searched. what i want the function to return is a new string containing the term (the parameter) along with a couple of words before and after it (as found in the search string).

I have an application written in AS3 that is loading swfs written in AS2. Most of them work fine, except for ones that contain the old AS2 accordion component. Loading one results in it working correctly, but each one that is loaded after it breaks the previous one (the content no longer shows and the mask disappears). It's not just limited to the accordion, any of the AS2 components that came with Flash Pro cause breakage. I've tried loading the swfs to separate movieclips, tried using applicationDomain, tried everything else I can think of. Rewriting the swfs in AS3 is not an option due to circumstances out of my control.

Im looking to be able to find a number (any number) within a text string, what i ultimately want to do is crop the number out of the string to just be left with a number value, the only problem is the string could be any length and the number doesnt necessarily start at any point from the last characterI have items on the stage named 'image0', 'textfield2', 'button500' etc, as you can see the prefix before the number isnt a fixed length so I couldnt use substr and set an index, and since the number could be any number i couldnt set the index as a certain value before the end of the string. (ie it might return '500' or 'ld2' or 'ge0' in the examples given before)

Is there an XMLList equivalent to Array.indexOf?
For example -
var array:Array = ['one','two'];
trace(array.indexOf('two')); // returns 1, since it's at the second position
trace(array.indexOf('three')); // returns -1, since it isn't found
[Code]...
there's got to be an easier way to check to see if one of the nodes in the XMLList has a particular value than looping through all of them, right? something akin to -
xmlList.indexOfChildByNodeValue('two'); // returns 1, because it's the second child
xmlList.indexOfChildByNodeValue('three'); // returns -1, because it doesn't match any children

I need to strip a string from another and get the remnants. The string I need to strip is a Twitter username, so it can be variable length, but always starts with an '@' and can only contain alphanumeric characters or underscores.
For example, the original string might be "@username: tweeting about stuff" and I need to get out of that ": tweeting about stuff".
