AS3 :: Flash - Catching Uppercase Letters

Aug 10, 2011

I know how to catch usual lowercase letters. I'm using KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN and compare the code to the ASCII table to find out which key was pressed. Now, I also want to be able to find out if there is, for example SHIFT+A pressed, and I have no idea how to implement this. I mean, in my program SHIFT and A are absolutely different keys which have nothing to do with each other, and they both will call KeyboardEvents when pressed. In Georgian alphabet some letters are typed by combination of SHIFT and English letters, for example W on Georgian keyboard means წ, when SIFT+W means ჭ. Absolutely different letters, as you can see. And I want to be able to catch both, coz I'm currently developing Georgian-language game.

I've tried running the example given on the Adobe site, so I know the value I'm trying to replace ("%20") isn't at fault - it's something about the string I have! I've included the code below, but it seems correct. Is there a particular tip I should know when taking XML values into AS3? I'm putting them in strings for this project.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Converting Words And Letters Into Numbers

Dec 6, 2008

I need to convert a many paged document into numbers.

logicly a=1, b=2, ..z=26 & 1=1, 2=2, etc.. the numbers of the letters need to be seperated by comma's

and the spaces between words must be replaced by dashes

so for example: "i am crazy for doing this" should look like this:

"9-1,13-3,18,1,26,25-6,15,18-4,15,9,14,7-20,8,9,19"

does anyone know of a script that will take up to 500 words per conversion, or does anyone know a application that will be able to do this? unlimited amount of words would even be better.

ActionScript 3.0 :: How To Replace Symbols At Runtime

Mar 1, 2011

My game will have plenty enemies, and most of them belong to a "group" or "kind" of enemy, which will act pretty much alike, with the difference of a "skin". I've made a long movie clip with a generic soldier with all the animation available trough labels and ActionScript (e.g.: for setting the walk animation in the enemy, I just do [enemy].gotoAndPlay("walk") and starts a looping animation, same thing for stand, fire, dying, etc.

What I want, is to create different monsters at runtime, just by replacing the symbols within the MC attached to the class, so a red soldier and a blue soldier will have the same animations, and both can be displayed on screen at the same time. This will be done at the constructor of the class, exporting the MC for Action Script as Monster and creating a class MonsterRed which extends Monster, and in the constructor method I replace every part with the ones I want.

If I didn't do this in runtime, I'd had to create a movieclip for each monster, and if I change some animation I'd had to replicate the movement for every monster of the same type. I could do this by making every part such as leg or arm of the monster as a movieclip with different styles in each frame, and switching between the different "skins" using [enemy].[part].gotoAndStop(x). But this is a very dirty workaround.

One clear example would be the same monster carrying a different weapon, the only symbol to replace here would be the gun symbol (and changing the behavior of this new monster, of course). How can I swap the symbols attached to a Class at runtime? So different classes inheriting a MovieClip exported for AS3 could have the same animation with different symbols.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Getting The First Letters From A String Of Words?

Jan 18, 2005

For a rather complex search function I need to get the first letter of each word entered into an input field. At first glance this may not seem like a big problem if every word is neatly seperated by a space.

Although people can enter whatever they want into the field I only want to work with the words that start with a-z or A-Z.

I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how I can determine if a character in the string falls into this selection. One of the possibilities is to use charCodeAt(), but that's rather rough. I can walk through the string using indexOf() but I may have trouble finding the next word if characters other than a space come into play.
