ActionScript 2.0 :: How To Prompt User To Install ActiveX On Visiting Site
Sep 13, 2011
I have a flash site that I maintain very casually (just a hobby). But recently, after a fresh install of Windows on my laptop, I went to my site in IE and nothing would happen - it was just a blank, white page. I have since discovered it was because I needed to install ActiveX on my computer- after having done so, the page now works perfectly in IE. So my question is this: how can I prompt the user to install ActiveX if they haven't already when they go to my site? I made my site in Flash MX 2004 (super old, I know).

If no flash is installed and one browses to http:[url].... it'll launch a popup box: How exactly are they doing this? Through some jQuery java-script code snippet or other? Second, I would like to know if there is a better way to inform the user that they need flash. Or is this an appropriate way?

I got Facebook to work with Flash as I wanted it to using the Facebook-Actionscript-Api. Works great and I got get Graph api working so that I'm able to post stuff to ppl's walls using the Facebook.api("/me/feed") post stuff without asking the user permission, as it's already got that permission, and it's great for many occasions. But not all.

How can save data into a XML file without user prompt dialog in Action Script 3?
I'm writing an simple application (with adobe flash) that runs on client PC and save user state data in XML file in same directory of app. When i use FileReference it shows a user dialog for saving file. Is there any class to save just XML data directly into XML file?
I think writing just XML (text plane) data couldn't make any security problems?

Is there anyway I can run an install file from a flash site. I don't want it to be downloaded first. And if not how do I get the file to be downloaded. Something like the PC format Cd's have, where the programs install directly from the CD.

I have a site where I want to restrict the user from moving forward unless they have visited certain pages. So if you visit page 1, 2, & 3, then a button appears that lets you move forward. I have this working using buttons. See Example: boolean.zip
However what I need to have happen, is instead of having it check to see if you visited the page by clicking a button, I would like it to check if you visited a frame just be going to that frame. I am not sure how to do that.

Got a site almost complete however the user authentication isn't working. Simply put, I wish my website to reference a PHP file, which is echoing a users authentication level. Via the Actionscript, Flash pushes the user to the frame on the timeline they have the authority to view.
My PHP Code
<?phpecho 'checkLog=999';?>
My AS2 Code - This code is pasted in the first frame of the timeline
appname="mikesapp"loadVariablesNum("newlogin.php", 0, "POST");
//This verifies the users status and forwards them to the portion of the website they are authorized to access.////Auth Level 100 = Regional Access, Auth Level 200 = Franchise Access, Auth Level 300 = Employee Access, Auth Level 400 = Denied Access and Back Button as they do not have the privileges to move forward from there.//
this.onEnterFrame = function () {
if(_root.checkLog == 100){
_root.gotoAndStop("regional");
} if(_root.checkLog == 200){
_root.gotoAndStop("partner");
} if(_root.checkLog == 300){
_root.gotoAndStop("employee");
} if(_root.checkLog == 999){
_root.gotoAndStop("denied"); }}
Because the "checkLog" value is 999, the user should be forwarded to the "denied" label in the timeline however it is not as the site simply loops over and over. I'm sure Flash is accessing the "newlogin.php" file as when I rename it, flash errors stating it cannot locate the file. I have changed it back to the correct name since.

I am a newbe to Flash and I have built a flash file that ends up with user input fields which write data to my 1shoppingcart autoresponder. From 1shoppingcart I got the HTML code to capture my website visitors name, email & phone number.
<form name="form1" method="post" action="[URL]">
<input name="merchantid" type="hidden" id="merchantid" value="111555">
<input name="ARThankyouURL" type="hidden" id="ARThankyouURL" value="[URL]">
<input name="copyarresponse" type="hidden" id="copyarresponse" value="1">
<input name="custom" type="hidden" id="custom" value="0">
[Code] .....
When I try to submit the information from my new flash website it does not work and when I did a trace on the application all of my variables seem to be working correctly but not in the same sequence as I had added them to the Actionscript. The only other difference on the trace is at the end of the correct post I get the following fields.
bh_is
bh_fv
bh_fx
bh_iw
bh_ib

I have a site that includes a Flash music player integrated into the layout. I want users to be able to navigate around the site without interrupting the music. I've done plenty of research and thinking and the following are the options I came up with (keeping in mind I want to be as SEO friendly as possible).
AJAX: I set up a version that changes the main content div to whatever nav link they click, thereby not interrupting the Flash player. I set it up in the proper search-engine-friendly manner with direct links and JQuery/Ajax functions. If someone goes to site.com/ and clicks the Contact nav link, it loads what's in the main content div on site.com/contact.php into the main content div and changes the URL bar to site.com/#Contact. The same goes for if they go to site.com/contact.php and click About in the nav, it loads the About content and changes the URL bar to site.com/contact.php#About. Obviously this opens up a whole new can of worms with AJAX and hash navigation/history issues, and I would end up with people possibly linking to things like site.com/contact.php#About (which I think looks terrible and can't be too great for SEO). Store the Flash player vars somewhere and reload them with the page: I'm not sure how to go about this, but I thought about keeping my regular navigation without AJAX and have it so when a user clicks a nav link, before it changes pages it stores the Flash player vars (current song and song position) somewhere, then loads them into Flash when the new page loads. Something with an iframe? Good alternative to a Flash player that will work for this type of application?

The problem is when I ask for extended permission from the user, using FBML. I get a link which I have to click and get the permission. How can I make sure a popup appears instead of the link. I'm using the following code.<fb:prompt-permission perms="publish_stream">permission</fb:prompt-permission>

In VB6 the main form loads a full screen .swf animation played by the ActiveX control ShockwaveFlash. If I rightclick on it (the control while playing) a small rectangular form says "About MacroMedia Flash Player 5" then the second form should be loaded (when animation is over) but Runtime error 401 says "Can't show non-modal form when modal form is displayed". I know the cause of this error and can fix it. But do you know a way about how to make ActiveX control ShockWaveFlash itself ( thru its properties maybe) not respond to right-clicks at runtime?
-----------------------
P.S No reason to right-click there, but as you know users can do anything.While the animation is playing mousepointer is set to invisible, yet still the error.

I just spent 3 days making a drop-down-button-menu. It looks great.I added it to the HTML of my website, but everytime you load the page, you have to download the ActiveX control...How is it that people have drop-down-button-menus that are flash-based, yet they don't make you download the ActiveX control? Should I just scrap my buttons and try to use CSS, or HTML, or Javascript?

I am trying to put a Flash ActiveX control into a Windows Form but I am running into a problem: a lack of documentation. The best I have found is a site called "F-IN-BOX" that has some documentation but much of the API is still a black box. For example, some property will take an integer or a string and provide no clue about what it wants. Another exanple is the FlashVersion() function that inexplicably returns 655361 on version 10.
Incidentally I'm having the same problem with Apple's Quicktime OCX. I've searched both sites and Google and I'm starting to wonder if either of these companies provide documentation for any of their products. Does anybody know where I can find documentation for either of them, even if it's the unofficial variety?

My external container isn't able to set FlashVars since I upgraded to Flash version 10.1.53.64. What's the matter ? A simple for loop didn't list anything in the loaderInfo.parameters object (for (var val:String in loaderInfo.parameters)).
It didn't happen with any older Flash version.

I am in need for some serious help before i have to do the ultimate and reformat my hard drive and spend the next 12 hours reinstalling everything. The issue is flash. I get this error "ActiveX control for Flash Player could not be registered" anytime i tru to install flash. I can see flash content in every browser except internet explorer 9 so I don;t know what to make of this. I have tried everything to now avail. There are a few programs that won;t work and always prompt me to install flash. When I do I get the same error. The fact that this error can;t be fixed is amazing to me. I am asking has anyone got any idea on how to fix this problem minus the usual links that Adobe has, none of their remedies work. I am using windows 7 64 bit.
