I am trying to enter a student name into a textfield (student1_txt). I just can't seem to work out the correct syntax. The student numbers and names are in an array. I have the fields working fine outside of the movie clip but not inside.
I wonder if anyone can see what is wrong in the statement below:
_root.desk1_mc["student"+heidedata[0]+"_txt"].text = myStudents[0];
This is probably easy stuff for most of you guys but have tried to have this working for the past hour and it's not working.I basicly have made my own button which is a movieclip. Inside the movieclip on the normal/roll off state i've put a dynamic textfieldwith instance name "textbtn" my button is supposed to span 2 frames on my mainstage, thought is need to say something different in each frame.
Sofar I have this inside the movieclip on Frame 1:

on my mainstage in frame1 I have:

I have a main movie that has a sidebar. The sidebar is it's own movieclip that contains two frames because it has two tabs on it. I would like to reference a dynamic text field that is contained in the second frame of the sidebar movieclip. When I try to do so, I receive the following error:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

Is there a way to reference an item in the second frame of a movieclip?
I have created a movie clip with the following path to a dynamic text field:
_root.i_lotteryball1.i_ballstrip.i_text.d_text1.text = _global.text1;
I have then duplicated the 'i_lotteryball1' movie clip, and called it 'i_lotteryball2'.When I try:
_root.i_lotteryball2.i_ballstrip.i_text.d_text1.text = _global.text2;
It changes the text in 'i_lotteryball1' text field aswell as 'i_lotteryball2' text field with the value of '_global.text2' How can I update each text field with different values.When I try to change the instance name of the text field inside 'i_lotteryball2' to 'd_text2', it changes the 'i_lotteryball1' text field instance name aswell to 'd_text2'!
My objective:
_root.i_lotteryball1.i_ballstrip.i_text.d_text1.text = _global.text1;
_root.i_lotteryball2.i_ballstrip.i_text.d_text2.text = _global.text1;
On the main stage I have a button that I have made invisible once the file is loaded. Inside a movieclip I have on frame 15 the following actionscript 3 code
button_mc.visible = true;
I want the button to become visible at the end of this movieclip. I am not using an external as3 file, I am putting the as3 code in its own layer on the first frame.
I know it has something to do with the path to the button, but I cannot figure it out. If there is anyone who can point me in the right direction for referencing instances by instance name that reside on the main satge from inside a movieclip
How do I make some text inside my scrollable text field linked.
EG:
(Scrollable using the UI scrollbar)
Test1
Test2
Test3
I want to link Test1 to frame 1, Test2 to frame 2, etc.
Ok, this is one of those walls that I know once I can jump over it, I will be a much happier developer again.
I've done tons of reading, and think I have a firm understanding that the general consensus is that if you want to reference something, it needs to be added to the display list, using addChild().
I hate to be defiant, but what if I don't want to?
Or at the very least, what if I want to add a movieclip class to the stage using addChild, and then reference objects inside it?
It is much easier this way than what most people recommend - adding 15 objects via addChild, then setting the x and y for the, etc.
That said, I'm all about using classes and using as3 the way it was meant to be used. So what this is, is a best practices question I guess.
HERE ARE THE STEPS I'M TRYING:
- Create new flash document
- Draw graphic symbol bg, with text field over it, select them, convert to movieclip symbol, and export class name "box", then delete it from stage
- Add document class .as file, which simply adds that class "box" from the library, to the display list using a simple addChild()
- Set a name for that box using box.name = "test" let's say
- Do a simple trace like the following - "getChildByName('test').textFieldName" - it shows up great
- So then, I'll now try to set the text by doing this - getChildByName('test').textFieldName.text = "yo";
That last line above, is what doesn't work. I know I'm referencing wrong, but how would a pro as3 developer, reference something on the stage within a movieclip class, from the document class?
Im creating a website for a client who wants to be able to update it themselves and so i'm using AS3 to create a textfield which calls text from a txt file to display and uses the UIScrollbar to scroll the area. What i'm wondering is, is it possible to load images into this same textfield so they are easily added and updated (like the text is) and so they scroll with the text as if it were all one part?

The flash file is supposed to go through the xml file and each time it reads a node it is supposed to create a text field on the stage with the text from the XML file. Then it is supposed to animate along the y axis for a short time, pause for a few seconds, and then continue animating along the y axis. (like a news ticker on a News Channel). Anyways, I've got the FLA reading the XML file fine and it even creates a text field populated with the text. I have combed the Web and I can't seem to find the answer. All I want to do is display some html-formatted text, located within an external XML file, in a dynamic text field in Flash CS3.
I don't have any code to supply because at this point the only thing I'm trying to display in the text field is "<b>This</b> is a <a href="http://www.google.com">test</a>." For this hypothetical example, I could call the text field myTextField. I just need to know how to format the AS3 code to get the XML to display inside myTextField.
Using php to declare a few Flashvars. No problems - they all arrive and behave. One of these populates a dynamic text field inside an MC. Simple enough stuff right? But.... when I try to test equality on that text field I get nothing. I've tried EVERYTHING I can think of. The MC is called "fake2". I have a simple Google Maps API with external data loaded from XML file (location, lat, long, info etc.). I also have a custom marker as a MovieClip (marker_mc), which works fine, but I want to add a Dynamic Text Field (label_txt) to this MovieClip and load a simple data (<label>) to it from same XML file (distribubtion.xml), so as a result every location would have it's own label on the marker.I know how flash loads XML data, but what I don't know is how to include that in Google Maps API (if it's even possible).

Is there a way to pass the textfield A text to a dynamic text input (flash) as I'd like to use the font embedding flash offers. I can make it work when loading a value from a txt file but I'm not sure how to access the value identified above as KitGroupID_16_TextOption_38 and make it appear in a dynamic input box. Eventually I might want to have 3 font choices for the user but I'd like to just see if I can get this working properly first.

I've made 18 movies in a for loop. I'm trying to modify a text field in those movies. I am unable to do so in the for loop. Something with my referencing is wrong.
The dynamic text field in each movie is named "eventText".

I am trying to create with actionscript a centred input text field, and a static field above it. My first problem is that both work fine individually but when i try and do them both the second one overwrites the first one, causing it not to display. Can you only have one text field in a movieclip?!
Secondly, when i delete the content of the input field it loses it's align and shoots to the left.

I'm writing a menu generating script. It's suppose to display arrays
and any inner arrays.
Ex:["test item",["item 1",["item 2","item 3"]],"item 4"];
These movie clips should be displayed if the actionscript is correct.:

item 1 <---this of course, has a following subarray
item 4
and the submenu should display:
item 2
item 3
I run the script and it see's the inner array items ["item 2", "item 3"] and shows them in the next submenu -FINE---but what I get in the main menu to my surprise is 'run-on text' in the Dynamic field of that movieclip. ex:
test item
item 1; item 2; item 3 <---? seems to concatonate inner items in text field
item 4
I only want to see text "item 1" ....not the items associated with it as well.
(they are already displayed in submenu)
