ActionScript 2.0 :: Replace With Random Words In Array
Jul 23, 2010
I want something where I click a button, and it replaces words with other synonyms automatically. My thoughts are:
set up array
(array1=array2)
array1="word1","word2","word3"
array2="word1","word2","word3"
search text for word in array1
if find in text= word in array1
replace with random word in array2
Would anyone know how to set this up, or point me in the right direction?

I was wondering if there was a way to code a loop so that it searches through a string and replaces a specified word that it finds with another.

I found this handy function...
String.prototype.replace = function(find,replace){
return this.split(find).join(replace).toString();
}
// Example:
foo = "Let's replace all the e's in this sentence with an o.";
trace(foo.replace("e","o"))
How would I replace the first "e" with "a", the second "e" with "b", etc...

I'm having some real trouble getting .replace to actually replace something. Here's my code...
[Code]...
I can trace both newFiles[i] and keywords[i][whatever], but the replace doesn't replace anything. The regex is valid as well. I'm using regexr to test it, and it works perfectly there... but will not for me and I don't know why.

I want to have a name appear on my Flash page stay for 10 seconds, and fly off then another name and so on... So it would sort of be like "her name was... JENNY", and the "JENNY" would be the bit that changed... I don't want it to ever end either so would I need to have some sort of file with like a million names in there that Flash would pull in?

I am making a game where random letters and words are generated into movieclips, thats the background. I built it using arial as my font, however I then decided to go with a fixed width font to make sizing the movieclips to the words much more straightforward. Yesterday this worked fine, the font i am using (Liberation Mono) is installed on my computer, all the textboxes which use this font have the character embedding on them, and I have not changed any of the movieclips, only non-relevant code. So I run it up again today and none of the words appear. Thinking it might be some code changes I made I go thourhg tracing out everything, only to find the wrds are being generated, and written to the textbox absolutely fine. I switch back to Arial just as a check and bang it works again.

I'm trying to build a bingo card, that will show random words in different locations each time you reload the page. It's 5x5 grid. I'm planning to set up 25 arrays (for each text field on my card), containing lists of the same 25 words. I have a code that pulls random words from each array into my text fields, but I can't figure out how to prevent the words from repeating on the card. A different word should be pulled out from each array.
Here is my code so far:
var words1:Array = ["word","table","lamp"];
var words2:Array = ["word","table","lamp"];
var words3:Array = ["word","table","lamp"];

I need to generate three lines of text (essentially jibberish) that are each 60 characters long, including a hard return at the end of each line. The lines are generated from a dictionary of words of various lengths (typically 1-8 characters). No word may be used more than once, and words must be separated by spaces. I think this is essentially a bin-packing problem.
The approach I've taken so far is to create a hashMap of the words, grouped by their lengths. I then choose a random length, pull a word of that length from the map, and append it to the end of the line I'm currently generating, accounting for spaces or a hard return. It works about half the time, but the other half of the time I'm getting stuck in an infinite loop and my program crashes.

I have a sentence that's basically items from an array, and I have this line that when I type one of those words on it, that word is removed from that sentence/array. And I'm having trouble coming up with a function, I'm trying to make it an if statement.so far I tried: and I know I need to put splice in, but this is just to see if it works or not.
ActionScript Code:
if(enterWordLine.text == sentenceLine.text)

Is it possible to split a string like "Lorem ispum dolor, sit amet. Howdy doody." into an array of words without commas and periods, in one operation?I've tried words:Array = startString.split(String.fromCharCode(32,44,46));i guess the reason my example doesn't work is because it searced for " ,." to split the string.

How do I create an array of strings from a string, eg."hello world" would return ["hello", "world"]. This would need to take into account punctuation marks, etc.There's probably a great RegEx solution for this, I'm just not capable of finding it.

I need to flash a series of words for 2.5 seconds with a pause for .5 seconds. The words are drawn from an array that is assigned, but I need to have these words flash in a particular order.For example, if the "words" were A, B, C, D, E (each of which I've assigned a stored value), I might need to show A C E B A A F.

for some reason escapes me: using AS3 how can a swf load another swf to replace itself in the same loader on the stage, while simultaneously calling a randomizing function in the first frame of the main timeline, to randomize the next swf?At the end of each swf (called "koan_#.swf") there is the following old AS2 code...it was used to randomly select and then play a swf from koan array:
_root.index++
if(_root.index>_root.koan.length-1){
_root.index=0;

I want a movieclip consisting of a dynamic text box that, from the time it's loaded onto the stage, loads a randomly selected text string from an array, and continues to loop until the clip is removed from the stage. I also want the text strings to appear in the text box for random intervals between 500 and 3000 milliseconds.
While I've found tutorials here and elsewhere on loading one element from an array, usually triggered by a button, I don't know how to combine/alter it with the other elements.So I want this movieclip on the stage randomly flashing phrases from an array, some for a barely perceptible time, and others for a readable time.

I've been putting data into an array via XML, and then selecting at random an image string to load in a pic at random. But whilst doing this, I wanted to remove the String from the Array that I have just used, so I don't get repetition of the same image in the output. I initially thought that pop would remove the string I had just used - But of course it Removes the last value in the Array instead, which doesn't really help.
Ok - so how about randomizing the data once inside the Array, after it has been pulled in from XML!? That way I can load in the 'last' image, and then pop it out! Keeping a randomized selection of images each time 'it' is loaded

so if my array is
ActionScript Code: var topScores:Array = new Array(1000,900,800,700,600,500,400,300,200,100)
I know that I can replace the item at position 5 by doing ActionScript Code: topScores[4]=550
but how do I just insert another array item without replacing so that position 5 becomes position 6 and position 5 is the new number?
more to the point, I then ideally want to lose the last postion so that the same number of items exists in the array

I've got the following script that loops an array of movieclips at random positions in and out of the stage using Tweener. My problem is that the loop uses all the movieclips (WELCOME00, WELCOME01, etc.) at once. What I'd like is for the loop to only use one of the movieclips, chosen at random, for the loop instead of all of the movieclips listed in the array at one time.
Code:
import caurina.transitions.*;
var mcArray:Array = [WELCOME00, WELCOME01, WELCOME02, WELCOME03];
var init:Boolean = true;

I have 12 empty Movie clips on stage. I want to get the content (jpg's or swf's) for these containers from an array. This is all fine, but I would like the contents to be loaded randomly into one of the 12 containers. The containers load the jpg's, which are preview thumbnails that need to link to the actual larger image plus some text. Loading eveything is OK, but I haven't figured out how to load the content into a random MC...
I attached the fla and images.

I'm creating a series of banners for a website. There are 3 so far with more to be made. I have made each banner as a separate swf file.The thing I would like it to do it create a randomly ordered array of the banner swf names and then load the banners in that order. Once the banners have been played or loaded through, I would l simply like it repeat that same order again.I have managed to create an array and play through that array in an ordered loop, but how do I create a random array that will do the same thing?[code]

I have problem with getting a random word from an array and the putting that word to a text field.
I setup the array for my words like this:
Code:
// a string of words
this.somewords = "wind breeze storm stormy tornado text space";
// convert the string of words into an array of words
this.wordList = new Array();
this.wordList = this.somewords.split(" ");
And I want to put randomly these words to a movieclip that I'm attaching to the stage about 50 times.
