ActionScript 2.0 :: Assign Variables To Text Boxes
Apr 25, 2005
I'm having some trouble with a flash 5 game I'm making. I'm attempting to make a simple choice game, where there are two input text boxes and each has a different meaning. Similar to url.... One for the smart remarks for a reply to their answer. The other for their score. I want the score added after the correct choice is made. [code]The problem is that I don`t know how to assign variables to the text boxes and the answers so that the score carries over from the last scene.

The problem is that I don`t know how to assign variables to the text boxes and the answers so that the score carries over from the last scene.
I'm having trouble with subtracting hp (a number in a dynamic text box). There's a variable on the main timeline for hp, and I'm trying to edit this when the character takes a hit.My character has over 350 hp at the beginning, but after one hit, it goes down to something like 1 or 6, and then after the next couple hits it'll go back to something in the 100s or 200s.
I don't see it documented anywhere, nor have I heard it mentioned but it appears that Flash has a problem displaying _global variable values in dynamic text boxes when setting the var property in the property inspector. I am not able to display the variable successfully using just the var property, but I can dynamically set it via ActionScript. Seems odd to me that it doesn't work. It works as expected with timeline variables. Also...can someone explain why you DON'T type _global variables? In fact, you'll get errors if you try to initialize a global variable as such:
Setting variables. Have a look at the file. Current height and width are both set at 200. I dont think i got the scripting right, or it may be in the wrong place.

I have a PHP file which is correctly pulling records from a SQL database. What I need to do is place each new record into a new text box. I understand that I need to assign a variable to each record as it comes through the PHP file and that Flash needs to know which variable to assign to which text box. So, in that respect I have added a counter to the PHP script (it is performing correctly)
I've had a site running for a few months that takes fourinput text boxes (name, e-mail, subject and message) and posts thevalues to an ASP page which composes an e-mail with a CDO.Messagecommand. For some reason (nothing has been changed in the files or onthe server), it stopped working and I've traced it down to Flashpassing Input Text Box Formatting information along WITH theariable.Can anyone explain what's happened and how to correct it?For example, in my form I've set all the name, e-mail andmessage to static text and let the Subject variable be passed andin the e-mail subject line, I get this:
I have two .swf flash 5 movies and on one of them it has two input boxes which for the sake of easyness we'll call....
Inputbox1 Inputbox2
Is there any way that on another .swf file i can recall what the user put in any of the Inputboxes and then if they entered "something" then it would go to a frame.
How do you assign an object different variables.I tried setting it up like this but I get an error.[code]How do you do this correctly I get error Label must be simple identifier when I do it like this.
As primitives are copied as 'value' not by Reference, this doesnt work:
ActionScript Code: var myPrimitive1:int = 10; var myPrimitive2:int = myPrimitive1; myPrimitive2 = 20; // i want this to affect myPrimitive1 too
My goal is to pick a random property on a data Object() and alter that. My approach was to put all the Objects properties into an array, and then randomise that array, and pick the first element. The only problem is of course that, that element is no longer a Reference to the original, so If I change that it wont alter the original...
ActionScript Code: // Create Data Object var myObject:Object = new Object(); myObject.primitiveVar1 = "string1";
I have 4 dynamic text boxes which duplicates the text from a main input text box. How do I write a code to make visible only the dynamic text box I want when clicked it's check box.What is the CODE to make each "DYNAMIC TEXTBOX" visible when clicked on it's checkbox?
I am making an audio player app that collects variables based on javascript running on the page. By default it loads 2 mp3s, but I need to be able to re-assign the mp3s that it loads based on different javascript clicks.
I think what I want to do is assign the default 2 songs to variables on file load. Then call a function that re-assigns those variables to the javascript variables passed in. My question is - how do I create a function that only runs on initial load? I assume I could then use javascript to call a different AS3 function to stop the player, re-assign the variables, load the file, and then start it again.
I have an AS3 function that runs when a URLRequest fails. I need to be able to use this function to assign global variables that I can then check against using other functions. How do I assign global variables inside of a function?
Edit:This is the variable (soundFile2Exist) I am trying to get outside of my function:
function onIOError(e:IOErrorEvent):void { var soundFile2exist = null;[code]...............
could anyone help me modify the code for these checkbox components? right now, the SUBMIT button checks which ones of the checkboxes are checked and gets their label, then writes the appropriate labels in a dynamic text box.[code]For the program I am doing, I need to have a maximum of 6 checkmarks and each one of the checked label must go into its own variable. (see gray part of the swf) I would also like the labels to appear in the right order, right now it's inversed.

// HERE IS THE CODE FOR THE Checkbox Components----------- // Array of the instance names of the checkboxes myCheck = [one,two,three,four,five,six,seven,eight,nine]; // Function
I was wondering if it's possible to have a dynamic text box that can change sizes, without distorting the text displayed in it... I would also like to set it up dynamically.
I use .txt files a lot with flash to load external news and updates. Although you can use the loadVariablesNum() command to load the .txt files is there anyway to edit and save the external files in flash? e.g. say I have a text box and a submit button in flash is there some way where I can add the text boxes content to a .txt file?
! I just did the Kirupa XML tutorial (for Flash MX) and ... I actually understand! But now I need to change a few things.. and I haven't got a clue. Right now, I know how to import text from an XML file into different text boxes. But, what I need to do, is be able to import text regardless of how many text boxes my FLA file has.
The code I'm building creates two MovieClips on the stage, in one it instantiates several text boxes and in the other some buttons.
What I can't do is access data from the text boxes (e.g. textField.text) for use in the functions called by the eventListeners attached the buttons. I had the system all working nicely before I placed the text boxes and the buttons on separate movie clips.but this structure makes it much tidier to refresh the text I'm using.The button functions are fine with variables created prior to the building of the text boxes.
Am I failing to address the text boxes correctly (because they're on another movie clip) or is there a stage / movie clip property I need to set so they can see each other ... or is this something else altogether?Could it be that the buttons are created before the text boxes?
Is it possible to tell a text box to auto fit to its text? What I mean is that when i change the size of a font to something smaller the text box remains its old large self. This is a problem because when I want to align this text with several other text boxes that have gone through similar treatment, the alignment will take into account the full box size rather than just the text.
So basically I have to go and manually shorten each text box. Which is a pain when you have to deal with a lot of text. Is there a script or button/option I'm not aware of that will auto fit the box constantly?
I want to parse the data from an XML file into an array and then put each of the values in the array into a dynamic text box on the stage. The text boxes are name "number1_txt", "number2_txt" &c.I have managed to set up a loop to parse the XML into my array and also to generate the names of the text boxes dynamically but I can't get the values from the array to display in the text boxes!
function parseXMLNumbers(doc:XML):Void { temp = new Array(); for (a=0; a<doc.firstChild.childNodes.length; a++) {
I have: Input text box Dynamic text box What's the code and where do i put it, so when entering a value to the input text, the dynamic will show the amount multiplied by 20?
