ActionScript 2.0 :: Calling A Function Based On Variable's Value?
Feb 16, 2005
say I want to declare a global variable in my main movie on a mouse event (button) and give it a value "functionA".
then I want to load an external .swf into a clip (with the same mouse event)
then I want some code in the loaded .swf to execute a function of the same name "functionA"
how would I code this?
this way I could load the same .swf but execute different functions depending on which button triggered the load... comprende?

I've got a simple program that consist of a document class and a buttonTemplate constructor class. I need to call a function called updateText that should be in the document class, when someone clicks on a button. So that after each button is clicked, it updates some text in my document class. My event listeners for the buttons are in the buttonTemplate class. My question is, how do you call a function in the document class from a constructor class? Here is my simplified code below
DOCUMENT CLASS
Code:
package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.text.TextField;

I have a function that has a For Loop inside it. Inside that For Loop I am defining a button and calling to another function if clicked. The issue is (since I shouldn't put functions inside other functions) how do I get the variable being processed in the For Loop to be considered in the function that was just activated by pressing the button.
Here's the code. All variable are defined elsewhere in the code.
function populateBox(DataInput:XML) {
linkAmount = DataInput.country[boxPartNum - 1].link.length();
/// defines amount of links being made
for (k=0; k<linkAmount; k++) {
myLink = new LinkClass();
[Code] .....
I need to trace the "K" used in the For Loop.

I'm trying to get to grips with having a function that can accept an input that is passed to it as it is called, and then use that input in its workings.As I'm writing more code, it's becoming clear that this is something that I need to pick up, but despite reading and playing about with it, I'm still a little confused.The code is designed for a character's "level up" screen. When the button next to a stat is pressed, I want it to pass the name of that stat to the statUp function, which will increase the selected stat by one.In my main file I have this code, to call the function when the button is pressed. (In this example, it is the Strength button)
ActionScript Code:
_root.buttonStr.onPress = function()
{

If the province is zoomed IN when I click another province I want it to return to its original size and have the next province that I clicked on zoom IN. Each time I zoom a province IN I want to set a variable to the value 1 so that I can use it as an indicator to let me know the status of the other provinces. Ie: if variable ON (Ontario) has a value of 1, then when I zoom IN on Manitoba I will use an IF statement to determine that Ontario is currently zoomed in (ON has a value of 1) and will zoom Ontario out prior to zooming in Manitoba. When I zoom out Ontarion I will reset the ON variable to 0. My code for Ontario looks like this[code]...

How can I get a variable to change based off of a function? For instance.
var imageNumber = 1;
And when I click on the next button it kicks off roughly this function.
imageNumber ++;
Effectively adding to the image number. But it is confined only to that function. The imageNumber outside of that function didnt change. How can I get the next button to change the number outside of the function?

I have some code that makes a variable based on an MC's name:
[Code]...
but it doesn't work, yet it traces "_level0.but1menu", and trying the function as this: _level0.but1menu.easeY(100) does work. I've also attached a mock up if you want to see what I mean. al input, this one seems weird to me - but I'm sure there is a completely logical explanation. I've used the same sort of idea to open external swfs with no issue.

I'm going to post the full code of the two functions, disregard the "fluff" unrelated to the two functions as it is all working flawless, I've tested this HEAVILY and cannot understand why it keeps setting the entire array to undefined!
Code:
// processReplace Function
function processReplace(transferFiles) {
var processArray:Array = transferFiles.slice();
[Code]....
Basically it's supposed to check to see if the file exists and return as true if it does and add it to a replace array, then the replace array is processed into a single string and put into a dialog box through the flash wrapper prompting them to "replace the files or not".
It makes the replace array just fine, it actually even has the right "count" in it but it's setting all the "filenames" to undefined because of the exists = processSearch function.
I even tried to make a new array and run the search just from that one and set the values from the old one and it's still failing.
Is it because of the "break" or can anyone figure it out? Iknow it's hard because you can't use the code

I would like to input a certain (x,y) coordinate and have a function return which movie clip is based at that location. Is such a method possible, to refer to a movie clip based on its position rather than instance name?

I'm trying to get this one function to be able to call many functions (not at once, but call many possible ones)In other words, I'm trying to get this variable to be named as a function. That way, this one variable can create multiple functions.example:

class Thing extends MovieClip{ var funcvar; var othervar; function onLoad() funcvar = "YYY"; othervar = "ZZZ"; function onEnterFrame()

I am refactoring some code. I have a PHP page that contains a MySQL query and stores the result in a PHP variable $my_result. This result is then echoed to a Flash SWF during embedding with SWFObject. I now want to call this PHP page that makes the query from a javascript function like so - one change I have made to the PHP is that instead of storing the result in a variable $my_result I am echoing the result. Javascript function to call the PHP page and make the database query

What happens if I have a previously allocated variable (new), then I set such variable to null in order to mark it for GC but then a few seconds later I call new again on it (not knowing if it has been GCed), and the GC still has not cleaned the memory address containing the variable.Would the first (new) allocation be garbage collected

Basically I'm creating a question with 4 answers (i.e. a,b,c,d).I have my question working fine, but I'm having a problem adding a check mark beside the answers once the user clicks the submit button.I've created four instances of my check mark; rightAns1_mc, rightAns2_mc, rightAns3_mc, rightAns4_mc. I've set them all to _invisible = false; I've also set up a variable; nCheck:Number = 0; and when the user clicks one the radial buttons I have the variable change (i.e. if they click A, it set to nCheck = 1; if they click B, it sets to nCheck = 2; etc)So in my if statement for the submit button I figured I could have rightAns(nCheck)_mc._visible = true;

var myvar = "this is the value of myvar";
var notMyvar = "this is some other variable";
var thirdVar = "this is some third var";
var nameOfVarToCall = "myvar";
//print the content of the var name specified, in this case "myvar"
I have a string which contains the name of a variable I need. What I want to do is find out the name of var (in this case "myvar") and use the name to access the value of the var (in this case just print out the value). Is this feature available in Actionscript. I know it's available in PHP and can come in very handy.

i have the following script, i'm just doing tests over failed attempts, I have a "cnc+i" dynamic variable, wich is a BitmapData type, i'm sure it's declared since the trace function returns true at the output, what i have a problem with, is at the moment of attaching the Bitmap, i don't know how to call it, and i don't want to do it manually like this: cnc1. Since i am planing on putting the attachBitmap inside a for loop:
ActionScript Code:
import flash.display.BitmapData;
this.createEmptyMovieClip("CNC",this.getNextHighestDepth());
CNC._x=50;
