ActionScript 2.0 :: Keeping The Data Parameter Of The Object Created With A While Loop
Mar 7, 2004
i've been struggling with the following:
i am creating a list of buttons with an attachMovie. the AS is :
//as
var i = -1;
while(++i<userlist.length){
var user = userlist[i];
[Code].....
okay the problem is this: then i assign an on click function to every button right in the while loop that uses the data parameter of the "ob" object and when i play the movie the data parameter is always the parameter of the last object created for all the buttons. I know why this is happening- it overWrites the old "ob" with the new with every itteration of the loop.
But how would i go differently about creating an individual "ob" for each button created and still be able to have a function with a data parameter like this.onRelease.userClicked(data)?

I'v been toying with this for a few weeks now and I'm trying to find the best way to animate several instances of an object created by a for loop thru an ENTER_FRAME function.When the function runs only 1 of the 3 instances that were created animates.
var balloonArray:Array = new Array();var balloon: hotAirBalloon;var xVel: Number = -3;var yVel: Number = -4;
addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, startBalloons)

I want to remove an object that is created in a loop, with a timer.
var timer:Timer = new Timer(2000);
timer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, voegtoe);
In function voegtoe I'm adding an Movieclip Object called man:
man.x=Math.random()*650;
man.y=Math.floor(Math.random()*(70))+350;
addChild(man);
I want to remove this object after 2 seconds. The problem is that there are multiple 'man' objects.

I thought this would be simple but for some reason I'm having all kinds of problems. Why won't the for loop create a new c instance each time the loop increments, like it does for sHolder and s? ...And, assuming it is possible to make it do this, how can each instance be given an identifier that can be accessed dynamically, like sHolder and s in the traceSomething function?
Code:
package {
import flash.display.Sprite;
import flash.geom.ColorTransform;

What I'm trying to do is setup a function that shoots through a set of buttons within a subset and creates click code for these buttons.
THe three variables are the identifiers for the actual keyframe i wish to jump to, the movieclip in which i want to perform the action and the actual button to go to the right frame.
Presently the problem I'm having is that the variables aren't stored when the onRelease functions are created, so they all are just calling the LAST variables declared.
Here's a sample of the code I currently have
Code:
//function to load canvas/acrylic
function setSwatches(mySwatchCount:Number, myContainer:String)
{

i load in AS3 data into flash and mantain their data type? Like receiving an array and even with arrays in it and recognizing that is an array instead of a standard string.
And if this is possible is it more reliable then using XML?

I am working on a modularized Flex application, and I am trying to cut-down on the amount of client-server interaction.Every time a module is opened, a request is made to a web service to get values to bind to the Flex form. If a user closes the module, and then reopens it at another time during their session, the same web request will be made.Since this data is static, i.e. not changing, I am thinking about creating global variables to hold the data providers. On the initial application load, a series of web service calls will be made to fill all needed data providers. Then, any time a module is opened, it can use these global providers instead of making unnecessary and repeated requests. These are NOT going to be huge providers, so I don't think browser memory should be a concern.

I'm making this banner, or FMA if you rather call it that, for a company (school assignment). I have some text fading in and out displaying the message. But I want an interactive FMA.I want to make some buttons, and when you go mouse-over on them, I want a picture to be displayed (different image for each button), WHILE the animation keeps going. Thats not the tough part.However, when the animation repeats (starts from the beginning), and if I'm holding the cursor over the button connected to the picture, the picture disappears and I have to go over the button again. Let's say I have an object, and I use a motion tween to animate it around. Great. Now, I want that object to stay at the final location while other stuff happens on the stage. I can't figure out an efficient way to do this. You can't copy individual frames of a tween, and copying and pasting the whole tween and breaking it up into individual frames and then removing all but the last frame is a bit... time-consuming.how I might be going about using tweens wrong? I feel like I'm just not doing things the way it was designed.

In my attempt to keep a movieclip on the bottom, I used this code: ActionScript Code:setChildIndex(movieclip,0);However, whenever I play an animation over it that is NOT in a movieclip, it will always cover the animation.For example, I have a shape tween that is not a movieclip. Whenever I lay this movieclip over it with the above code, it always covers the non-movie clip. Is there any way to prevent this?

Primitive Data Types (Boolean, int, Null, Number, String, uint, and void) are treated as "values" rather than Objects, so when you pass one of them into a function, instead of passing a reference, it basically clones the information, and creates a new instance. It does the same thing when when you use "primitive1 = primitive2", and instead of passing on a reference, clones it.I thought there might be a slim possibility Flash allows me to reference primitives if I treat them as objects instead of (in this case) ints.
Code:
var num1:int = 5;
var num2:Object;

I've got a frame of code with two boxes on the stage. If you click on of them, it runs this code:
ActionScript Code:
charSelect=1;
And if you click on the other box it runs this code:
ActionScript Code:
charSelect=2;
Now, on my main frame of code, I've got an init() function which runs all the initialise commands. It includes this:
ActionScript Code:
function init() //Loads assets to the stage and starts animations {
if (charSelect == 1) {
character.addChild(character);
} if (charSelect == 2) {
characterFemale.addChild(character);
}}
These functions basically let you select which character is loaded to the stage with the instance name 'character'. All my control code is written in relation to the instance name 'character'. However, after I've clicked the box which selects which character to load to the screen, I get this error message:
ActionScript Code:
Scene 1, Layer 'Layer 1', Frame 2, Line 155 1061: Call to a possibly undefined method addChild through a reference with static type Class.

I'm trying to write a function that keeps a running count whenever a button is clicked - and then writes the count to a Shared Object cookie. Here's the code:
Code:
function counterVar() {
var elemSharedObject:SharedObject = SharedObject.getLocal("elementChoices", "/");
[Code]....
Everytime it runs the count gets reset to "1", endlessly.

There are a number of parameters that can be added to object and embed tags to embed flash videos. Most are listed here. Some of them can be accessed/changed programmatically via ActionScript (e.g. <param name="scale"> can be accessed via stage.scaleMode).
Can the value for the loop parameter be accessed/changed?
Edit to add: I know about flashvars, that's not what I'm asking.

for(var i=1;i<=2;i++)
{
var mc=attachMovie("mc_name","obj"+i,i)
mc._x=200*i;
[code]....
this code places two objects obj1 and obj2 and two buttons button1 and button2
button1 is expected to return _level0.obj1
button2 is expected to return _level0.obj2
Instead they both return _level0.obj2. Obviously, each button is passed the object corresponding to the last "i" in the loop. How shall I sort this out? One of the obvious solution sis to attach each button to its object
mc.mc=mc.attachMovie("button","button"+i,i+10);
but this is not acceptable for some other reason I also have to use this for(var i=1;i<=2;i++) block because in the final application the number of objects will be variable and set by the user at the run time.

So I am curious as to how to get passed this problem I am having. am I doing this completely wrong?

I'm trying to dynamically addChild a Sprite to an already tweened MovieClip (tweened on the Flash timeline).
Let's say ObjectA is the tweened object, I published it in my swc and linked it to my Actionscript project in Flash Builder. I make an instance of ObjectA in my class, and then try to do the following:
var objectA:ObjectA = new ObjectA();
var objectB:ObjectB = new ObjectB();
objectA.addChild(objectB);
addChild(objectA);
Now, the problem is, objectB doesn't tween along with objectA. Is there any logical solution to this?

[code]My code will:
- loop through the Grid array and place each tile on the stage
- assign RedBall a random Grid coordinate and places it on the stage at that coordinate
I want to be able to click RedBall, which will create a border around the tile beneath RedBall, and create borders around the tiles above, below, to the left and to the right. BUT, I don't want to reference the tiles by their distance in pixels from RedBall or from each other; I want to reference the tiles by their coordinates in the Grid array. So I want to:
- get the coordinates of RedBall
- use those same coodinates to reference the tile at the same coordinates in the Grid array
- use the tile's coordinates to reference the tiles above/below/left/right
- apply a border to all these tiles
What's the best way to reference an instance of a tile? Should I apply a name to each instance as it's created in the loop? like myTile.name = "tile"+i+"_"+j; ? If so, how do you reference that instance later? Just tile1_3 ? Do you have to prepend it with root, or stage, or the class it was originally created in? Do you have to use getChildByName? OR, can you still reference it later without having given it a name?

I have a simple gallery site with thumbs 'gridBtns' that show and hide content pages 'projectPages'
I have a loop that duplicates an MC (projectPageHolder) (that already exists on the stage) 20 times, simple enough. I run a trace that confirms they all exist.
In the same loop I give a different set of 20 MCs (gridBtn) an onRelease function that attempts to show and hide the projectPage MCs using _alpha, again simple enough.
For some reason the first 4 MCs disappear...they do not trace or become visible, but the rest are fine.

I am creating a loop which loadsimages to newly created loaders. After each loader completes, I'd like to pass it through another function Here's my loop of loaders where loader_names is an array of my loader names and overlay_files is an array of my file URLs
for (var j:int = 0; j < loader_names.length; j++) {
loader_names[j] = new Loader();
loader_names[j].contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, completeHandler);
loader_names[j].load(new URLRequest(overlay_files[j]));
}
Once each image loads I want to overlay the image on a map here's a loop which does just that, only I do not know how to pass loaders into this function as they finish
function create_overlays(e:Event):void {
for (var k:int = 0; k < loader_names.length; k++) {
overlay_names[k] = new GroundOverlay(loader_names[k],
new LatLngBounds(new LatLng(46.669, -115.035), new LatLng(48.995,-112.079)));
}
}

Image's paths are in the xml file. I make a loop to load images to the Display List.
So if i have a loop:
ActionScript Code:
for(var i:int=0;i<xmlList.length();i++)[code]....
after it is done i would have access only to the last imageLoader instance. How to get access to the rest of images, which were added to the Display List with the same name "imageLoader".I tried to call it with the imageLoader.name property,but surely i do something wrong, as only errors appear in the output panel.
