ActionScript 2.0 :: Loader Component Handy In Loading JPEGs And Scaling Them To The Specified Size
Dec 13, 2004
I've found the loader component handy in loading JPEGs and scaling them to the specified size. However, I've found it a little annoying that when the image is loaded, sometimes you can see the image in it's original size for a fraction of a second before it's resized to fit the loader. Is there any way to avoid this -- such as the loader only being visible after the image is resized?

I have multiple "Loader Components" placed in a grid that are working great for loading external JPEG's. However, when I publish my file the "Loader Components" load each image randomly (I assume because they load the smallest file in size first then next largest and so on). How do I load the content of multiple "Loader Components" in a specific sequence?
Here is the script I have so far:
////"Thumb1" is the instance name of the first "Loader Component" in the grid.
Next is "Thumb2", then "Thumb3" and so on
Thumb1.load()
if (Thumb1.percentLoaded >= 1 ) {
Thumb2.load();}
if (Thumb2.percentLoaded >= 1) {
Thumb3.load();}
if (Thumb3.percentLoaded >= 1) {
Thumb4.load();}
if (Thumb4.percentLoaded >= 1) {
Thumb5.load();}

Does anyone have a loading solution that allows for loading swf's, jpegs and is fully customizable? My duct tape solution had been to have loaders in every swf that i was planning to load in- but this feels silly. I've tried a couple of components from the adobe exchange but they lacked a bit of elegance. Whether it's a class or example file- I just want to be able to smoothly load content into the parent- where the loader also resides.

I'm using the textArea component, but i want to scale it to the size of the browser window. The problem is it scale the content(xml+css) and the scrollbar, and i want to just change the size. I've also tried to attach the Component and then setting the size, but that give the same problem.

I've devised a preloader using the ui loader and progress bar components in flash cs3. The goal being to load an external .swf into the uiloader and that has been achieved. I'm having problems with the scaling now. In my code I have set the content scaling to "true" and that isn't supposed to cause distortion of any type but it does. It squishes my external .swf in width wise.
HTML Code:
var imageURL:String = "portfolio.swf";
var imageURLRequest = new URLRequest(imageURL)
uiLoader.scaleContent = true;
uiLoader.load(imageURLRequest);
progressBar.source = uiLoader;

Using the MovieClipLoader class, what is the difference between loading the external files into a Loader Component or into an empty movie clip. Will one be quicker? They both worked for me, but I've read using the Loader Component is better. Can anyone confirm this? I would think that avoiding components would make things faster/less file size.

I made a flash website with photo galleries using a component that I bought online. The component is loading the image in a thumbnail scroll bar via a XML file and the full size image display in a UILoader. So far nothing special. But when I reach a certain amount of pictures in the gallery, the scroll panel get stuck while loading and doesn't display the full size image. Then the thumbnails don't react at all.

I've used loadMovie() often in the short time I've been using Flash. But never to load a JPEG dynamically. For a site interface, I have little thumbnails, which open to new browser windows. This is partly annoying though, as each one opens in it's own window, so the user would have to close a whole bunch of 'em after clicking all those thumbnails. To try to fix this, I read that JPEGs can be loaded at runtime onto the stage. I've already seen the photo gallery tut, but I only require a pop-up window with one image and no left/right buttons, etc. I've tried following the tutorial for the first few steps, making a shape the size I want the images to be, converting it to an MC, and naming the MC instance on the stage. Then, I created a new layer on frame 1 with
Code:
loadMovie("CS_00_1.jpg", _root.picture);
, but when testing it, I see nothing. I've tried a few different things. Before, the fla was in a separate folder, so I had to include "Screens/" in the name. Just in case that was the problem (I didn't get any errors in the Output), I moved it into the directory with the images. I tried absolute and relative addressing. I opened up the image in PS and resized it to the size of the symbol on the stage and made sure it wasn't Progressive (I read in a thread that Flash doesn't load Progressive JPEGs), but still nothing. I even tried loading a file that didn't exist to make sure it was looking in the right place the other times (as it didn't give me any error).

I have filenames of Jpegs stored in a MYSQL database. The filenames are returned with other information by PHP to Flash as variables.
I have some dynamic text boxes that have the variables set so that the textual information is displayed but I would also like a movieclip that behaves in the same way but with the pictures.
How do I create some form of movieclip that reads the variable pic1 that is returned from PHP.

on Flash MX 2004 having problems with loading external jpegs and stuff. I got a tutorial from here and loading from a web address on it is okay,
but I can't get my one to load from my hard drive because there is always an error with the path. I know it'll ultimately be on line anyway but I want to know what I'm doing wrong.[code] What's the correct format for putting in a file path?

II'm trying to create a title page where two movie clips fade in. One is a dynamic text movie clip, the second is an image that is loaded.[code]I've traced the heck out of this, so all I know is that image_mc seems to only generate a single onEnterFrame event and then stops.It seems that if I comment out the .loadMovie line, the placeholder movie clip fades in properly, so obviously there is something about onEnterFrame events and loadMovie that I don't know.

I have an interesting issue, I am trying to load 12 images into their own "Loader" with Scale content set to "true" so they scale down a bit. If I run this in Flash it works great, the 12 images show up fine inside the loader. If I then load it to a website and view it with FF it works fine, however, if i load up IE one or two of them will be fine but the others will be huge, basically not scaling to fit. By Loader, I mean the component loader. I'm sure I'm not the first person to have this issue, my first thought was they are not loading 100% before Flash is trying to scale the content? If that's the issue, how do I preload them?

We have photos that are loading too slowly and I need to speed them up. I am using AS2. What's even more perplexing is that at certain times after refreshing the web page, some photos load and some do not. It seems to be random, at various times, the photos that did load do not. I cannot put my finger on why this is happening..
First, I tried using loadMovie(). Then, I tried the var loader:
MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader(); with loadClip()
For each JPEG. You are welcome to look at the site and see if there is anything that I can do to improve the speed of the loading. [URL]

I'm writing a movie that should load image from external location and display it in placeholder. I called placeholder "imageMC" and I gave it dimensions on 250x250 px.Next I load image using Loader class and I'm waiting for complete event.After that I try to resize image so it will fit to placeholder. I also want to keep fine aspect ratio.My code looks that:
ActionScript Code:
function onComplete(e:Event):void {
var wFactor:Number, hFactor:Number, originalWidth:Number, originalHeigth:Number, newWidth:Number, newHeigth:Number;
originalWidth = loader.content.width;
[code]....
The problem is line: "imageMC.addChild(bmp);". When I add a bmp as child of imageMC the trace statement looks like:
Quote:
250:187 //loader.content dimensions
252.05:362.4 //imageMC dimensions ??!! WHY THEY ARE CHANGED???
250:187 //bitmap dimentsion
and imageMC resizes his heigth and display image wrong scaled.But when I add bmp as child of stage: "addChild(bmp);" trace looks like:
Quote:
250:187
250:250
250:187
and image is scaled propertly.What is cause of this error?

I'm getting a bald patch on my head from frustration with the following problem. I have a parent AS3 swf which loads in a AS2 swf like so;
stop();
var ldr:Loader = new Loader();
ldr.load(new URLRequest( "as2child.swf"));
addChild(ldr);
contained in the AS2 file is the following script which loads in jpegs when the user clicks the next button, etc.
[Code]...
however when you view the AS2 swf via the AS3 swf it does not seem to load in the jpgs when requested.
I need to retain the AS2 file so cannot rewrite in AS3 as the image loading thing is only a small part of the AS2 file.

I have a "master" SWF file into which I load content (other SWFs) via the Loader Class (with code below).
var contentLoader:Loader = new Loader();this.contentContainer.addChild(contentLoader);I load the content (these other SWFs) into a MovieClip container on the stage called "contentContainer". The "contentContainer" is much smaller than the "master" SWFs stage and also much smaller than the original size of the SWFs that the Loader is loading in. Also, and this is very important, the "contentContainer" itself is sized -- not scaled -- (see code) and placed on the stage depending on how large the stage is scaled (I am trying to make one of those "liquid stage" flash sites that fills the browser window with flash content regardless of window size).//this resides in a function that is called whenever the stage RESIZE Event is fired

I have a scale up and down function that increases or decreases the size of an external loaded image inside a loader. What i am now trying to do and having trouble with is playing certain messages when the scaling reaches a certain point.
For instance when the user uses the 'increaseScale' function and scales 'image_Content' up by 40% its original size then 'warning_msg.visible = true;'
When they increase it by 65% then 'stop_msg.visible = true;'
This will then respond the same way if the user decreases the scale back to 40% and so on.
I cannot work this one out, i have posted the code below and have attached the fla file...
Code:
//------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I want to create a panel (or any other component) inside a component that has a 5 pixel border on all sides, but scales fully when the window is resized. I know I can set width to "100%" to make it resize, but that gives me no borders. If I put it to "95%",I have borders, but they scale annoyingly. Also, that only works for borders on the right or lower bounds, and not to the left or upper sides.Is there a convenient way to do this without having to write tons of resize-code (in which case I will not bother and just accept bad rescale behaviour, as it is for a private pet project).
EDIT: I know that I can just overwrite the display handling and set the positions manually every frame. I wondered if there is a cheap way to do it in the mxml-structure, along these lines:
<mx:Panel>
width="100%" height="100%"
</mx:Panel>
Coming from C++ and Java, I am intrigued by the option of setting something to "95%" and let the library work out the details, instead of having to write many lines of code, just so my text-area always keeps a 5 pixel distance from the border, but scales with window width.If there is no easier way to do it than figuring out pixel sizes by hand and setting the coordinates.

I have a gallery that reads an ms access database using asp and then loops through an array of records and duplicates an empty movieclip for each record. jpeg is then loaded into the movieclip and then a variable for the _x position is incremented and then the next one is loaded etc.I then use the same method to add the necessary labels for the images by duplicating a movieclip and adding a text fieldThis is all fine and produces a gallery of images but the problem comes when I try and position the labels according to the height of the image. I have tried every method I can think of to check the image attributes which are only available when it is fully loaded, but I keep getting a value of 0.
Code:
stop();
// Set variable holding image folder path

how to scale a SWF in the browser window, but not larger than the original stage size in the FLA file? For instance, I've designed a course in Flash with stage size of 1024x768 in Flash. In the published HTML document, I change the following values:
'width', '1024' changed to 'width', '100%'
'height', '768' changed to 'height', '100%'
'scale', 'noscale' changed to 'scale', '100%'
These changes in the HTML source code allow the SWF to size with the browser, but I don't want the SWF to grow larger than 1024x768 if the browser window is greater than these dimensions. I want the max size of the SWF to be 1024x768 regardless of the browser window.
how to achieve this in the HTML source code and/or AS2?

Sorry for the complicated topic. I got a .swf that loads in other .swfs. Rather than figuring out how to make a loader for loading .swfs I thought I'd just use a simple loader in the .swf I'm loading.
However, it doesn't work. It starts fully loaded but doesn't finish. Heres the AS:[AS]_root.stop();
PercentLoaded = _root.getBytesLoaded()/_root.getBytesTotal()*100;

I'm working on a project for college and am having a spot of trouble. I'm trying to create a handy application for a football accumulator but can't work out how to use two different attributes to display the relevant information.
The idea is to present the big four clubs, plus the team they're playing, in the correct order - ie Home Draw Away. I've managed to get the first game displayed but if I change the relevant child node to display another game, I can't get the Home Draw Away sequence or only display one of the big four games.
I've added two attributes to the XML - big_four="1" or big_four="0" - for the event and hda="H" (ie for home) for the particpants in the game.

Is there any performance difference? I am scaling a 2000 - 4000 wide movieclip, within a 600 wide stage. Does it matter which way I scale it in terms of CPU usage;
myMovieClip.scaleX *= 2;
or
myMovieClip.width *= 2;
The movieclip will be scaled multiple times and to varying sizes.

Is it possible to have a single jpg (1024x768) scale up & down with the browser window (no matter the aspect ratio, stretched to 100% browser width/height), while keeping the foreground content (most likely added via loadMovie) in a fixed scale and centered on the screen? An example can be seen on the Second Story home page.
