I am having issues with a global array. I have an actionscript file called MyGlobal.as at the same level as my main FLA:

I am able to trace that first element while trace is called within the function... but if I try to trace that first element outside of the function it is "undefined". Do I need to return the array at the end of the function? I tried that but I cant seem to get it working correctly.
I've been playing with prototype a bit and I've noticed that either it isn't as static as it should be or that some functions are protected from altering, or that in some cases the prototype actually extends a function. For example, I was trying to modifiy the global trace function to output the current time of a trace action, something like this :

ive got a loaded xml list for an mp3 player. from playing track1, when i select track 2, it traces "track1" but then after a second click it traces "track2" and stays on that. the actually music for track2 does load on the first click though, but not the trace. anyone know why on the first click it would still trace the previous track? here is the code for that function...

I'm teaching myself ActionScript and the book I'm reading just got into input text capabilities. The book shows me how to link input text to a variable and output that text to the output window using trace. My question is: how can I display the text that the user input onto the actual movie. For example... if I wanted the visitor to type their name into the input text box and click Submit and then a phrase shows up with their name such as "Hold on Name, my site will be done soon." How do I reference that variable and have it actually display in my movie?
View 5 RepliesI'm loading some text from an XML.If I use the trace() method, the output shows nordic letters (���), but when the text is shown on stage in a textfield, "�" is shown correctly, but "�" becomes regular "a".
The font supports nordic letters.
All of the nordic letters is correctly displayed in the rest of the page I'm developing.

XML is saved with UTF-8
... a shot in the dark is better than nothing at this point.

why does the last trace not trace "32" like the second trace? I want to insert the variable "imgGal" onto the end of the mc "itemClip", how can I do this?

How do you send the output of a function to a dynamic text field on the stage instead of the output panel?I have used trace(); but that just sends the value to the output panel.
View 3 RepliesI have a dynamic text box on my stage that is 400px wide. The text box is being populated with flashvars data from an HTML file and auto-sizes (myTextBox.autoSize = TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT) so it will display all content by expanding when the text spans over 400px. But when I trace 'myTextBox.width', it always returns '400'and when I trace 'myTextBox.textWidth' it always returns '0'no matter how much text I push into it through the flashvars.
This is because the trace is only tracing the previewed swf in Flash which has no ties whatsoever to the HTML file and flashvars.Therefore, when previwing the swf, my text box is always empty.The only way to see the content populating the text box is when actually launching the browser with the swf embedded in it.Because of this I cannot seem to be get flash to 'do things' based on the new width/textWidth values of my text box after it has been populated with the flashvars data from the HTML file.How can I get flash to detect the new width/textWidth of my text box after it has been populated by the flashvars data from the HTML file?
Here are the files:[URL].. Even weirder, if you triple-click on the text field the moment it appears on stage, it will start to display.
Even more weird, if you right click, select all, copy and paste it onto somewhere else, the correct value will display.
Weirdest: Another textfield refuses to display at all, even the text I set in the flash IDE.
I have a dynamic text box on my main time line with an instance name (NOT var name) of MCtxt. My textfiles have the variable of txtMC. I have a movie clip with a little ease bar on it. When the user mouses over the movie clip the ease bar goes to the mouse and, once it comes close to stopping, it triggers some AS to capture a number. Then I have a switch statement that does some stuff depending on the number.
So here is the code I have on that movie clip:

Tracing j returns the correct number and the _root.date.text works just fine. But the text is not loading and the trace on the success returns an undefined. I have tried moving all of the loading text code inside the case but it doesn't work there either. All variable names are correct (quadruple checked, at least) so it's gotta be something with my code.

I'm trying to trace the width of the actual text of a dynamic textfield (called 'label'). i know this should be
code: trace(label.textWidth);
however, all I get is an 'undefined' message in the output box. Whereas, if I trace(label.length) instead, then it counts the number of digits in the text field. I thought label.textWidth would work? I want to find the length of the text in pixels basically...
I have an application that writes traces with a timestamp when certain items are clicked or accessed. I need to write these to a text log file so that they can be accessed remotely.. The device the app runs on doesn't have a web server and doesn't run the flash debug player, os is xp. How can I send these traces to a text file? I noticed Arthropod writes to an html file, but I need to do this automatically without interaction.

Now i'm making a website, with an swf which play's an flv. The flv can be paused etc. now is my question, after the flv is played I want this to redirect to for example index2.html where are a couple of links. and from that page you can go to the next.
I've seen on the web a lot of reactions about this question, people say use the playerdiy.com. but that's not gonna work for me now.. Because i have set the design up this way (picture in swf which say's ichap etc, with a black solid where the video is been played).

I am currently using Flash CS4. Trying to do a very simple redirect via a password. What I want to do is whatever password they enter (variable defined as code) I want it to direct them to the keyframe. The below works if they enter hi (sometimes it seems to work sometimes not). I have a SWF embedded in an HTML file. After the movie has finished playing, I want a new URL to load. I currently have the following code in the final keyframe of my actions layer: navigateToURL(new URLRequest ([URL]) ); ...which works, but the problem is that it opens up a new window for the new URL instead of redirecting within the same window, which is what I'd prefer. Is there a different command that I can use to force the new link to open in the same window? I guess I could use a Javascript redirect within the web page's HTML, but it seems safer to me to use Actionscript within the Flash movie.
