for some reason, the code won't return anything. the output just says "undefined". Would a good workaround consist of putting the return function within a setInterval method?

For example, if I input the number 10 in an input field, I want the number 1.2276, 0.00100, 106.38 and the rest of that row to output these values I have seen so many options, don't know where to start.
View 2 RepliesI'm writing a game that involves cargo, and I plan to have a large number of cargo types. Currently I have a Cargo class, and a ship carrying cargo has an array of the Cargos it is holding. I'd really rather not have each ship with a bunch of objects when all I really want to know is how much of which cargoes each ship has. Especially when these ships will be created and discarded a lot.
I'm sure the thing I'm looking for is so basic I'll look dumb for even asking, but I know there's something similar to an array that holds an object and a related value. I want to use that to reference the Cargo type from the static array, and hold the quantity.
What's it called? How would I use it (ie what are common functions used for it)? Some code snippets and terminology would be ideal.
I have an array which holds objects. The objects have properties called cat and title. The cat property can hold values like:
Cat 1
Cat 2
Cat 3
And the title property can hold values:
Title 1
Title 2
Title 3
So that you wind up with something that looks like
Cat 1
Title 1
Cat 1
Title 2
Cat 2
Title 3
etc.
Now, I want to sort these, but we all know that Array.sortOn(["cat", "title"]) will produce results like:
Cat 1
Cat 10
Cat 11
Cat 2
Cat 3
What's the most efficient method of sorting these properly (so the number component sorts like a number and not like a string)? I can request users pad their entries (yes, other people will be entering this data), but that's both a little bit ugly and not very user friendly.

I am currently working on an educational project. After submitting for review, the clients have requested I make an array which was hard coded in the as file, to read from xml. The problem I am having is that I do not know how to populate the array with the information contained in the xml file.

I am wantying to replace the word lists that are included with the information in the xml file so as to allow different users to create different words for the list without having to edit anything othere than the xml file.

I have populated a comboBox dynamilcally from an xml file. When a user selects an item from the comboBox, I want to search the XML nodes and retrieve an attribute of that node.At the moment I had this working correctly by storing the value in a _global variable and using the info in a function.

I am loading an xml file and some of the node attributes do not have values:

I get a null object reference when I try to run the second book line because of the missing description. Can I check for this in code and skip accessing the description for this line?
Something like if (xml_book.@description is null) {do nothing}else{do something)?

In flex/actionscript 3, I can call node.attribute("somename") and get the value of the "somename" atribute of the node. I can also call node.attributes() and get the VALUES of ALL the attributes. But how the heck do I know what attributes to look for?! The application I am creating does not know the format of the XML file in advance. It's been a about seven years since I have done any work with Flash but now my employer is asking me to create a custom online magazine tool (we're publishers). I've been immersed in PHP and AJAX and building Mac apps with XCode so I've got a bit of a relearning curve to go through.

I'm developing using Actionscript 3.0 for Flash Player 10.3.I'm using computeSpectrum() on a loaded .mp3. Running *Event.ENTER_FRAME* to get snapshots of each sample in an byteArray.The ByteArray contains 512 values (256 for each channel). These values are FFT Spectrum, ranging from 0 to 1.I can't use the peak frequency for each of the samples (as I found found out!) because the highest value is not necessarily the fundamental frequency. As a result I'm getting lots of random values all over the place.Of course I'm getting some correct too, but that's not enough.

I trying to populate a combobox from a .php file and return the values of the selection. I have the .php set up to where it outputs something like

after you click the dropdown arrow..How would I get it to return a the numerical value for the artist (ex: anartist would be "0" since it is first in the list) and put it into a variable so that when it is selected it could be placed into an eval() function to create a variable such as "albumcover0" to be loaded through a function. I'm trying to make a login function that receives the username and password as arguments, does all the proper URLRequest and URLLoader stuff inside it, and retrieves some values from the database. Then, it puts those values inside an object (a little associative array really) and returns them. I've put 'trace' sentences all over the function, and it seems to be working without a problem and is retrieving the right values from the database. I'm using the .unshift method therefore the newest values go into [0] and the rest are pushed down.
What is a good method to remove a value from an array once it has passed a certain length? For example i only want my array to hold 5 values.
Also, is there a method for clearing the entire array, ie removing all values? Or will i have to manually change all the values with a loop?
