i'm trying to search a string for a particular pattern, and replace it with elements from within the pattern... for example..here's the given string...if you want to learn how to use regexp, {url===http://somesite.com, text===click here}.
the pattern...
{url===http://somesite.com, text===replacement text}
and the intended result...
if you want to learn how to use regexp, click here.
of course, i'll extract the url and do something else with it... i'm just wondering what the regexp is for that pattern, and how i can extract things from the results returned.

How do you bind an event listener from the controller to the view's elements eg button (click event) to its own handler? Originally I was doing this from the view eg. button.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, controller.buttonClick); But now realise this is wrong since reading "each view is only supposed to "know" about the model which it represents, and "know" nothing of the controller"

Is there some way in flex to parse strings to date. I want it to support custom formats similar to 'dateformatter'. Using 'dateformatter' class we can parse date object in various string formats as specified by 'formatString property'. I want it other way round, from string to date. The parse method 'Date.parse(my_string)' does string parsing but for a very limited set of formats. Can't we have something similar to following, where user can specify his/her own formats.
someformatter.formatString = 'HH::MM::SS' ;
mydate = someformatter.formatTodate('23::56:34');
Will 'parseDateString' method of dateformatter be useul here?

I've read some documentation about regular expressions in AS3. I was wondering if it is possible to check every word of a string for a pattern. If all the words satisfy the pattern, the test is passed, otherwise is failed. [code]

I need to write a regex which will match URLs that do not have a specific query string name/value pair anywhere in its URL. All other query string names, and all other query string values with the same name should be matched. Other pages in the same directory (or sub-directories) should not be matched.URL...The query string name and value that I need to exclude from matches is:[code]How can I prevent matches when the string exists anywhere in the pattern?

I've read some documentation about regular expressions in AS3. I was wondering if it is possible to check every word of a string for a pattern. If all the words satisfy the pattern, the test is passed, otherwise is failed. Here is an example of what I mean:
Code:
var reg:RegExp = /[a-z]/i;
var str1:String = "a b";
var str2:String = "a 1";

I have to parse out color information from HTML data. The colors can either be RGB colors or file names to a swatch image. I used [URL] to develop and test the patterns. I copied the AS regular expression code verbatim from the tool into Flex Builder. But, when I exec the pattern against the string I get a null. Here are the patterns and an example of the string (I took the correct HTML tags out so the strings would show correctly):

Is there an XMLList equivalent to Array.indexOf?
For example -
var array:Array = ['one','two'];
trace(array.indexOf('two')); // returns 1, since it's at the second position
trace(array.indexOf('three')); // returns -1, since it isn't found
[Code]...
there's got to be an easier way to check to see if one of the nodes in the XMLList has a particular value than looping through all of them, right? something akin to -
xmlList.indexOfChildByNodeValue('two'); // returns 1, because it's the second child
xmlList.indexOfChildByNodeValue('three'); // returns -1, because it doesn't match any children

I need to get an XML node by using this syntax:
[pseudo code]
xml.node["subnode"].@string.children();
[real code where _xml is XML]
_xmlList:XMLList = _xml.cases["case"][@id == event.target._id].files.children();
And yes, case is a reserved word - therefore the brackets and quotes.
event.target._id is a string, but I can't seem to figure out how to concatenate the @ (at sign) with a string to get the attribute (or the node that corresponds to the attribute).
I've tried _xml.cases["case"].(@id == event.target._id).files.children();
But it doesn't work. How am I totally off in the wrong direction?

loading in xml in as3 (I followed the excellent Kirupa example [URL] and so far so good.
I now want to check if a certain string is present in a particular node and if so run a certain action. For example:
say my xml has a node like so:
<fruit>
<apples>
<item>Customer likes Granny Smith, Winesap and Fuji apples</item>
</apples >
</fruit>
How can I check if a string is present in a node eg
nodeVal = displayData.fruit.apples[i];
if(nodeVal == "Granny Smith"){
//perform certain action here
}

Kirupa's tutprial "Using XML in Flash CS3/AS3" when filtering the node values, how can I match a text string say "Stephen" with "Stephen E. Ambrose"
var authorList:XMLList = bookInput.Book.(author == "Stephen E. Ambrose");
Using the above code it only searches the node which author value is "Stephen E. Ambrose" but I want to search only "Stephen" and want to get this node returned.

addToStage("TextInput","name");
private function addToStage ( o : Object, str : String ) : void {

I have an AdvancedDataGrid tree with a ArrayCollection as its dataprovider. Now, for instance, i drag a leaf from one node to another node. To catch the event I'm adding a Listener to dragComplete.
[Code]...
My Problem: I want to know the new node where the leaf was dropped. Actually i would have expected that in the event there is a property like dropParent. This is not the case.

I thought this was going to be easy! I would like to search an XML file for a particular data set i.e. set of nodes depending on a passed variable. However, storing a subset of my XML file via Code:var gallery = this.firstChild; and then searching 'gallery' as you would an array-using a for()-doesn't work since this.firstChild isn't returning an array
Code:
<gallery>

I made a .as Class where some graphical elements are spawned into the stage. However, the Flash (.fla) have some internal graphics that are supposed to be over the graphical elements spawned from the custom class.I tried to make another layer over the layer where the as3 Class is being called, but unfortunately it doesn't do anything, the graphic from the .as still appearing over the internal .fla graphics.

I can't understand why should I even use the Singleton pattern in ActionScript 3. Can anyone explain me this? Maybe I just don't understand the purpose of it. I mean how it differs from other patterns? How it works? I checked the PureMVC source and it's full of Singletons. Why are they using them in the View, Module, Controller?
