Does anyone know if AS3 or FP9/10 enforces a minimum increment or resolution for the Sprite rotation property?It seems to only allow rotations in multiples of 0.25 degrees.For example:

var lines:Array = new Array();
for (i=0; i<2000; i++){
lines[i] = new Shape();
lines[i].graphics.lineStyle(.1, 0x000000);

This draws the lines in groups at 0.25 degree spacing with gaps between them.

As is well demonstrated by a Google search, the rotationX, rotationY, and rotationZ properties turn a display object around the center.

That's all well and good, but I want to rotate a display object about a different point.

I can't believe there isn't a way to do this, but I don't see anything that addresses this question specifically.

I found this actionscript online to rotate a sprite around its center point but I get two errors when I use it. 1084: Syntax error: expecting identifier before leftparen. 1084: Syntax error: expecting rightparen before leftbrace. Also, in place of angleDegrees do I put in the angle I want the sprite to rotate by?

I'm attempting to write a racing game. I've loaded in my image, I brought it to the stage and now, all I want to do is rotate it from its' center and not upper left corner.

The code:

racer.rotation += 5;

rotates from the upper left corner. How do I rotate from the center of the car/sprite? I've tried putting it into a container but I'm unsure on the coordinates of the container because I tried to set the x,y coordinates to half the sprite image but y'know, it's not doing what I expect it to.

Flex :: Converting Sprite To Bitmapdata With A Different Registration Point And Rotation

I'm trying to convert a Sprite that I have into BitmapData so I can perform some collision detection. There are a few things about the way the Sprites are used that is making this more difficult than I expected:

The Sprite itself is a container which holds another Sprite that actually has a box drawn in it. The inner Sprite is positioned negative half its width & height so that it can be rotated from the center via the container. The container may be rotated at any angle at any given time

So my approach thus far has been attempting to draw the outer Sprite onto a new BitmapData object with a Matrix to account for the difference. Whilst I can use a Matrix to make this work for one particular rotation angle, I cannot find a way to make it work for any rotation.

Here's what I'm doing to draw onto the new BitmapData:

var bounds:Rectangle = p.getBounds(stage);
var bd:BitmapData = new BitmapData(bounds.width, bounds.height, true, 0x00FFFFFF);

Flash Motion Editor - Rotation Y Property

I recently installed Flash CS4. As I attempt to learn from different tutorials I've run into a problem I can't figure out. I've watched the video tutorial at: [URL] several times to try to emulate the rotating logo. The problem I run into is when he says to open the Motion Editor and to edit the Rotation Y and Rotation Z properties. When I open my Motion Editor there is no Rotation Y or Rotation X. There is only a Rotation Z property. I've played it over and over to try to discover what setting I've missed but don't see it. How do I see a Rotation Y property to be able to edit it?

I am completely new to using Flash and AS, so I decided to start off with something that seemed simple enough, rotating an image. Turns out it's anything but simple. My initial idea was simply to have two layers, on one of which I had the image I wanted to rotate, and above that some other image that was transparent. I've had lots of problems with this but I have managed to hack my way through to some solutions. I would like for someone to confirm if I have understood these solutions correctly.

One problem was that I implement my images (which were BMP at first but now GIF) as Bitmap, and they sit in the library and on stage, so they're visible when I run my Flash movie. However I had problems figuring out how to access the rotation property of my Bitmap, and what I ended up figuring out is that apparently even if it's loaded on the stage and in the library, it can't be used by AS as such. So I ended up having to use Linkage and making a SkyClass, which I then use to make a Sprite, which I can then change the orientation of. But is that really how I have to access my Bitmap, even if I put it on the Stage designtime?

generally, how i work involves designing all of my graphics in Flash Authoring, converting them to Sprite symbols by changing the base class to flash.display.Sprite, give my instances names and finally export them to ActionScript.the approach actually permits me to dynamically create properties in code on my Sprite instances that i've exported to ActionScript, just as if they were instances of MovieClips. i'm not entirely sure why i'm able to do this, but i can. in polling the objects to make sure of their superclass, they are indeed Sprites and not MovieClips.however, as expected, if i program a new sprite from scratch in code and try to dynamically add a property to the new programmed sprite a compile time error will result.

Through getChildByName is it possible to access the mouseChildren property of a Sprite? I'm guessing no, but before I go about changing something I want to make sure it's necessary and that I'm not just doing something wrong..

ex:

Would give me an error. I see this is because getChildByName returns a DisplayObject object. So I guess my question is: Is it possible to get the actual Object (Sprite in my case)?

Flash :: Set ScaleX Property On A Sprite Without Altering The Child Inside

My site is set up with next and prev buttons on the right and left sides respectively, and as you roll over either of the hit areas around the buttons a Sprite fades in which contains a TextField that describes the next page. Said Sprite calls the StartDrag() method, so it follows the mouse within the bounds, which is all fine and dandy on the left side of the page. Adobe, however, seems to have forgotten to put a way to dynamically alter the registration point of a Sprite, MC, whatever else, so when you roll over the right side of the page, the sprite is displayed from the top left and is mostly off the stage.

Trying to hack this problem I have tried numerous things ( classes written by others, other hacks) and the best that I have found is to use the scaleX method on the Sprite, changing the scale to -1. This, of course, makes the Sprite seem like it's reflected from its normal point, which means all its children show up backwards.

Is there anyway I can use this hack without it altering the text?

OR

Does anyone know a different way to go about displaying a Sprite from another corner? Any way to make a Sprite fade in and follow the mouse on the LEFT HAND side of the mouse pointer?

test.fla's document class is Test.as
test.fla's library has two MovieClips ThingMovieClip and Thing2MovieClip

I tried accessing the Thing.as public var thingState's property;

directly,

using something called Casting (??),

assigning an instance name,

but something that seemed so simple doesn't work,I commented the errors I got next to each way I tried,conversely how would I access the MovieClip Thing2MovieClip from Thing.as (which is a child of Test.as because that's where it's instantiated), it just doesn't recognise an object of its parent exists, here are the 2 classes:

Is it possible to have the child movieclip rotate separate of the  rotation  properties assigned to the parent? so ultimately giving the  child  element it's own axis?I've customized Lee Brimelows (gotoandlearn.com) 3D carousel to spin  on  the x axis to make it a vertical carousel. I've also rotated that by 45 degrees on the y axis to see all the items, and wrote a snippet of   code to hide the left portion of the carousel. The entire  carousel is contained within the 'container' movieclip, and  inside of  that are my carousel items (as seen below), with the larger  item being  the item in focus.

On rollover of the item in focus, I want to rotate it so it faces the   viewer (as seen below),basically removing the 45 degree rotation   applied to the container.The problem i'm running into is when you rotate the container (changing   the rotationX of the container), the axis basically rotates with it, so   when i rollover the next item 'in focus', the following happens..(in  the  example where it appears how it want it to, the carousel is at a   rotationX of 0, so it works fine)

Program A has a cannon that aims to line up with where-ever the mouse is pointing, in 360 degrees, and fires when the mouse is is clicked. Program B has an eye instead of a cannon that should in theory do similar functions when the capslock key is toggled, but instead only has a 90 degree range of motion from the Right of the eye toward the bottom (quadrant 4 only). Where did the ther 270 degrees of rotation disappear to?

I know the hitTestObject produces a boolean value so if I ask it to ++ a variable it will continually increment until the objects have stopped hitting each other. But is there a way to just get it to increment a variable by 1 on collision?

I ask because I have a racing game and when the car crosses the start/finish line I want to increment "var lap" by 1.

there will be a simple solution to my problem. I have an onEnterFrame event that happens when I am dragging a wheel. At a certain point during dragging, a boolean statement is set to true, and a mc with 120 (120*3=360) frames is targeted, so that when the user drags a wheel, if rotation is incremented +/-3, the mc._currentframe is +/- one frame.

the mc is 120 slices serving as a mask of a circular bar, which is hidden or exposed depending on the rotation of the wheel by the user. The problem I have is tracking when the rotation has incremented by +/- 3, since Im using onEnterFrame I cant find out how to store the rotation variable somewhere when it hits the +/-3 mark, and then continuly check for the next increment. I am watching the tutorial on the motion editor and when he opens the motion editor to edit the Rotation X and Rotation Y values I'm in trouble.My motion editor now only shows Rotation Z but, no Rotation X or Rotation Y. What am I doing wrong?
