Is it 'elegant' solution for a website which displays loads of images, to save users waiting time and preload images one by one, always to the same object (so the machines memory won't fill up) and then on request load the image once again (so the browser will use a cache)?

View 2 RepliesI have a large project built in as3. Part of its main functionality is to load and unload various as2 swfs. The problem is that the memory ins't free up once they are unloaded.
I have access to the as2 swfs code base and destroyed all objects, stopped and killed timers, listeners, removed from stage, destroyed all the MovieClip.protoypes that were created. They look to be clean as far as the AS2 debugger show no remnants of the object after the destroy function is run. In AS3 i've closed the local connection, cleaned all references/listeners to the AVM1Movie and ran Loader.unloadAndStop(). The trace out in flex says the swf was unloaded but looking at windows task manager the memory usage never drops to when it was before the as2 swf was loaded. Each as2 swf can take up to 80 megs each time it's run so memory gets eaten up fast and loading and unloading a few as2 files.
At this point if the AS2 swfs are unloaded the only thing that I can assume that could be left is MovieClip.prototype and/or _global, _root variables add during the AS2's run time. But i've gone through those and can't find anything else that might be sticking. Has anyone ever seen problems before with the AVM1 machine not freeing up its memory?
I have an actionscript file which provides me with xml data. But I m not being able to save it to the local host machine. The code i m using to save the file is just the normal one i.e

I've tried saving the data as byteArray first n saving it in a xml file. That didnt work. I've flash player 10 installed and I m working in Flash Professional CS5. I have also used a hex editor and changed my swf file's 7th and 8th bits from 09 to some A0 as directed in a website but I m always getting an error which is

I am new to Flash/ActionScript, and I am having a lot of fun creating a project in Flash. am working on a character tracker (yes I am totaly geeking out) an I was wondering how to save the data I have entered into the project (hit points etc...) and load it back next time I opened it. The data would be saved on my local machine. How can I get Flash/ActionScript to do this?
View 11 RepliesI wrote an application in flash AS3, and when I trace from flash the total memory usage of the total application is only about 9MB, But at the same time Task Manager Shows the memory usage as 110MB. Around 100MB difference.Flash Trace Method System.totalMemory difference of the Trace from the Beginning of the application to end of the application.

I have an FPS monitor running and notice that I am getting choppiness here and there, bringing my game from 40 to 27 fps and back and forth at certain stages. I have an idea of where it is happening, but do not know for sure. I looked up quite a few memory monitors but haven't found anything decent yet. Is there a memory monitor that allows you to see the memory leaked and find its location? If not, how about just he memory leaked?

View 1 RepliesI have an issue whereby a new font (FFF Forward variant) installed on some machines works perfectly in flash (cs5.5) but on one machine causes an instant crash when the Type Tool is used.I know the font is the core of the problem but am unsure why it works on some flash installations (same versions) and not others?

I have a videochat app (as3) developed in CS5, when I test the movie (ctrl+enter) it compiles and shows no errors, then I upload the file to the server and does not work at all. the xml paths are perfect, in fact when I go to the page on the machine with FLash CS5 it loads fine, but from a friend's computer does not work at all.

In order to get around this I have installed php+apache to call an external file that writes to a file. I have created the crossdomain.xml and put it in the root of the web server on my local machine.
However, I can ONLY run the flash file in the flash program AND IT DOES WRITE TO A FILE. If I publish it as a html I still get the security error msg. Now another requirement of my program is as the user interacts with my flash application it changes an xml and the page should refresh to show the changes. But because I can't run my flash program as a html file I can't refresh the damn page! I'm half thinking of setting up a vm machine as a pretend server to get this damn thing working. Then I at least have the server + client model.
Several months ago I created numerous flash files that use a wingdings checkmark. Recently I had to update these files, and now every single one of them displays as the Arial equivalent (umlauted u). It shows as the umlaut in FLA and in SWF. Selecting the unlauted u, looking at properties confirms the font is set to wingdings. Copying a wingdings checkmark out of another app and pasting into Flash, it immediately overwrites to the umlaut. In fact, changing it to any font just makes it a slightly different umlaut.
The easy question is, "What changed between when it worked, and when it doesn't?" and the answer is I'm not sure. It's the same Flash installation, same machine, same OS, etc. I've tested this with co-workers. Those who open the exact same file on XP machines see the checkmark. Those who open the exact same file on other Vista machines see the umlaut. I have an XP machine to my left, and a Vista machine to my right, and I'm seeing both a checkmark and an umlaut off the same FLA.
Is there a reliable way to access the client machine's clipboard using Javascript? I continue to run into permissions issues when attempting to do this. How does Google Docs do this? Do they use Flash?
View 7 RepliesWe are deploying a media management system within a local network. FMS will be used to serve the media within the local network. Since we will only have max 100 users and we have a powerful dual 4 core xeon and the plan was to install IIS and FMS on the same machine. But now I read that there will be a conflict because the embedded Apache server that FMS installs will fight for port 80 with IIS.
So one possible solution: I've been reading in the Adobe docs that RTMP is far more efficient than tunneling through HTTP, so if we make sure all client machines allow RTMP (firewall exception) can we then change the configured Apache port and assume that Apache will never ever be used?
Heck in this case can we configure FMS and choose not to install Apache at all and be OK?
I need to test the upload speed of the client machine in AS 3.0. So I thought to upload an image that embed to swf, to server without user interaction.

I am pretty good at figuring out software, but I have not used Flash CS4 much,so I would like an expert to tell me the best way to go about doing this animation with this software.

I would like to know if it is possible to connect from one AIR app on machine A to connect to another AIR app on machine B via sockets without cirrus. I'm not asking for someone else to do my work, I couldnt find any documentation or possibility of the above thing. View 2 RepliesI have developed a flex application (Flex 4.5.1).I want the flex application to be used only by the domain names that I allow. As soon as the application is loaded, I check with the remote database if the domain name is valid.
The problem is that flash player only returns the domain name of the user's machine. What I want is the domain name of the website that the flex application is part of. For instance, if the webpage I browse for my flash application is[url]...., I need [url]...or [url].... Is that possible? Every method I have tried only returns the name of the website visitor's computer.
We have a quiet big flex application compiled with flex 3.4 SDK.We also have several modules to load after some requirements (some at startup, some later).Everything is compiled with the same version.At some point i got this exception on my machine and don't know how to fix it.
