ActionScript 3.0 :: Getting Buttons To Work Under A Mask

I have a little experience with flash so if this is a silly questions I apologize. I have a scrolling panel of thumbnails for a photo gallery that I am putting together. The panel has a mask which doesn't allow the thumbnail buttons to function. When I remove the mask, then the entire page scrolls with the thumbnails -- I do not want this.
I've used this code to apply a gradient alpha mask: bg_mc.cacheAsBitmap=true;mask_mc.cacheAsBitmap=true;bg_mc.setMask(mask_mc); Then I applied a motion tween to the mask_mc clip. But the motion tween doesn't happen? It only shows the first frame of the motion tween. It does apply the alpha mask though. Why doesn't it show the rest of the motion tween.
I checked out a lot of sites but can't figure out how to do this. without the mask my animation of a button growing bigger works well, the stop command is respected. But i want an image inside the form of the button that grows larger, so i took a picture on a layer below it, and made the button into a mask. visually, it works fine, but it loops, since the layer in mask mode doesn't respect the stop ();
I'm having a hell of a time trying to get a custom mask to work on a project I'm creating.
The mask I'm trying to use is applied as a pixel mask on a layer in the photoshop doc I'm working off, but I can't seem to figure out the proper way to get that layer mask imported into flash, to then compile into my .swc and be called from actionscript. (I'm coding in Flex)
Whats the proper workflow for getting a pixel mask imported from photoshop so that when I call:
container.mask = myMask;
It'll show up as the shape I want, and not just a square box the size of my shape?
I have an animation that has mask in it. I'm using actionscript to set the mask.The problem I am having is all the mask after frame 1 doesn't work. When I trace the movie clip name it says null. I know it's because flash can't access movie clip's name because hasn't loaded yet.I have the AS in a .as. I have tried putting the as on the first frame, same thing.
I'm dynamically attaching a movieclip linkage to my root timeline. The linkage has two layers inside -- a graphic shape mask and an empty movieclip for loading images. The empty movieclip is masked by the graphic shape mask.I'm using a MovieClipLoader object to load and manage the preloader for the empty movieclip when it loads images.Why does the mask sometimes work and sometimes not? Would the image type have anything to do with it? Or is it something to do with the act of attaching the linkage and then loading images into the empty movieclip contained therein?
I have a movie clip with 15 frames. Each frame has buttons on it (mc's)... I was going to put the actions on the main timeline/stage and navigate within the MC from the main timeline. Is that possible? I can get the buttons on the first frame of the MC to work, but I can't seem to figure out how to target/make the buttons on the other frames work? I was thinking I could identify the path of the MC with the frame labels, but that doesn't seem to work. like: _root.RMChanger.(frame label).buttonOnFrame = function
I have to move a text box in and out over the MC backgrounds on the main stage... which is why I was thinking to do it this way? I've been switching back and forth bwtween AS2.0 and 3.0
I am having trouble with a job I am doing at the moment which has an mc with buttons within it. I want it so that when I roll over the mc it tweens from a small version to a larger version, and on this mc there are some buttons. At the moment I can get the mc to move but the buttons remain inactive and also the rollover states on the buttons don't work. I have attached a simpler version of what I am trying to do to this post.
I have a MC with a text form with several input and combo boxes (flash <=> php) it as a scroll and it works fine, except when I put the MC under a mask. It still scroll's but nothing shows inside the input boxes when I type on it. Is this "normal" procedure for flash or It's a bug of some kind?

I'm having problems with the flash buttons on the flash website i made for a client. or some reason the buttons in the top and bottom menu work on some people's computers but on some they don't. I don't know what to do, i had this code for all the buttons,

and they worked on my computer but on others the buttons didn't work at all so i added this code to each button also
I am using Flash CS4 with actionscript 2 to create an interacitve portfolio.I have 2 text buttons that work when I test them with "enable simple buttons." When I publish to IE these buttons won't work. I have created over 50 buttons using the same methods, they all work.

Basically, I have a little game that involves finding things in an image with a custom mouse cursor that is a magnifying glass. One large image over a smaller version of the same image, the cursor masks the large image. There's a bunch of Math figuring out the movement/positioning of the large image on MOUSE_MOVE to match up with what you are mousing over in the smaller one, and I have a Rollover/Rollout on the smaller image to swap the cursor in/out. The problem started when I put 5 invisible buttons down inside the large image. You get cursor flicker when rolling over the invisible buttons, because smallImage.rollOut is being triggered, then smallImage.rollOver, then out, then over, etc... and I have no idea why.
I can't use startDrag() because of the large image movement needed on MouseMove, and I tried it with EnterFrame and it's worse.Like I said, the demo isn't exactly what I have in my project, but it's close. There's no parallax math, and the project I have is class-based, but the demo is on the timeline. There are 3 levels - A is the root child, B inside of A, and 3 buttons AA, BB, CC inside of B. I have a simple circle Sprite as the mouse cursor.
Basically, I've built an application which is working fine. I have a 'settings' button that overlays a settings window, semi transparent, over the main application, that has some buttons on it.The problem I'm having is that the buttons on the main window are still selectable, which I don't want. How can I get it to stop tracking the buttons underneath my overlay window?

I decided to try to use setInterval for myanimation, which is just a mouse trail.However, I'm trying to get teh mouse trail to be a dynamic mask.In my previous swf this was achieved by using a holder mc with the animation inside and then using this as the mask. But this time I just canpt seem to hit on the right way to get it to work. The code I am using for the mouse trail is:

I'm trying to create an xml accordion menu that has main menus and a sub menus buttons (movieClips) revealed with a mask. Simple question, How do I stop the mask area which reveals the sub menus catching mouseEvents on the submenus?The main menu button is a movieClip, it has the mask sprite attached to it as a property so it can scale dynamically to reveal the subMenus. They are set as children of the main menu button container. In my code I've set mainMenu.mouseChildern = true. But when the mainMenu is clicked I change mouseEnabeled = false to help prevent the main menu receiving events. This helps on rollOver rollOut events, but when I click or mouseDown on the subMenu the mask catches the event also and activates the main menu again. I've tried the obvious mask.mouseEnabled = false; mask.mouseChildern = false; mask.hitArea = null; and even setting mask.alpha = 0 but this has no effect at all.
I don't understand why the mask has to extend the hitArea property of the mainMenu and why this can't be set to null. It also seems crazy that when mouseChildren = true the parent clip also has to receive notice of the event.
I have a startDrag function set up on a loader and mask that when the mouse is down on the loader it drags, when not it doesn't. There is also 2 buttons that control whether mask1 or mask2 is used. What i would like however is when the mouse is down - the area of the loader outside of the mask is visible but only by about 10/20% alpha, that way the user can see where all the image is while dragging. Is this possible? Full code can be seen below and i have attached the zip with the .fla file:
what i am doing is to make something along the lines of the "scriptable mask" tutorial Inigo was kind enough to put up.My idea is to have a large mask behind the whole of my flash site, this masks a colour image with a black & white one (nothing tricky). The image I am using is actually 5 separate images combined, and each is a pic of certain parts of the site.I also have a very basic set of buttons along the bottom... each corresponding to each section.
All I want is to set it up so that when I mouse over the buttons, the _x of the mask moves to correspond with the correct image... really very basic... or so I thought .If anything it should be easier to do than what is in Inigo's tut (where he uses the _x of the mouse to move the mask)... i just cant seem to get it to work with a nice easing effect (its easy to get the mask to simply snap to each coordinate, but I need it to smoothly move).
I'm trying to create an informative flash program on Mt. St. Helens about the dust cloud it created when it errupted. I have everything ready to go including the buttons and the pages the screen or next image it should take you to. I'm just stuck on how I get the buttons to actually take you to the next frame.
if i'm on the home page of this flash site, a button on the nav menu loads the correct scene the first time it's clicked, but if you nav to another scene and click the first one agin to return to it, nothing happens. why would a button behave one way on a scene and another way on another scene?
maybe point me towards a better way to mask. png file is way too big. I have been using the mask layer option to create my own mask around a jpg image by drawing around it on the mask layer. There has to be a fetter and faster way to do this. Is it possible to maybe have a specific color range have an alpha value of 0. Similar to green screening whereas If I put the item I want to clip on a green background flash will auto take out the green for me. and by auto I mean action script maybe. I think this can be done but im not finding it.
how are these guys clipping these images [URL] they have the movie clips set up where the black background on the 3 layers of shoes is getting masked out. When I go into the shoe movie clips I see there is a black background but it just disappears when I go back to main timeline.
ive gotten one movie clip to mask another in the actions frame but i cant seem to be able to mask the flames which are a shape with a movieclip in this as file. im not getting any errors but the mask isnt covering anything look near the bottom at s.mask=mask_mc; there are about 20 "s" shapes spawning per second if that has anything to do with it

I've used flash like twice in my life, but I think I know how to make a button. I'm working on my artists portfolio online and I'm making it in flash. Basically it has buttons which link to photos and videos. There are 5 videos and 5 photographs. Now the problem is when you click on a button and watch a video buttons 1-3 of photos don't work. But the 4 and 5 buttons for photos work. It seems to only happen after you watch a video. The same actionscript is on all of them GotoandStop is the command I'm using for the photos and GotoandPlay for the videos.
I had all of my code working, then I moved all of my main movie timeline into a movie clip (body_mc)Main movie now has 1 frame.My body_mc has a navigation menu, one button is portfolio_bttn which takes you to that frame label. It persists through all frames of body_mc. This button works fine.I seem to have everything working except 4 buttons on the first frame of body_mc. They should all perform exactly the same function as portfolio_bttn. They exist only in frame 1.They work the first time you click one (any one).Navigate back to frame one of body_mc and all 4 buttons will no longer work. I am a new comer to flash and I have been teaching myself actionscript 2.0 and I am now trying to move to action script 3.0 this seems a dumb question but for the life of me i can't figure out how to make my buttons work.i am trying to have the user click at button that connects to a movie clips and plays the movie, the movie stops then goes to the next frame of animation.
I am new to Flash and am having an issue with a project I'm working on. I have buttons that are in frame 1-150. I wrote the code in frame 1, but expanded the box to frame 150 so they will work. However latter in the project I want to be able to gotoAndStop frame 150, but when I do the buttons no longer work. I changed it to gotoAndStop frame 1 and they work. Can you not link to buttons in the middle of the "timeline".
