ActionScript 3.0 :: Grid-based Interface (custom Rendering Fonts)

I am trying to build a experimental interface (menu, text etc) which is based on a fine grid of points, on which i try to render custom fonts and shapes, by connecting the dots. I would store coordinates for characters (O consists of 4 lines for instance) and render them in an animation line by line, character by character.(this non interactive version is my first step)My question is, what would be the best way to store such a font collection, and execute the above. Any Thoughts? all ideas are welcome

I just discovered impure.com and was very impressed by what can be achieved in terms of visualizing data using their workspace. Although the platform is free to use, but not open source yet. This causes a few problems because the API section works with .com sites for eg. for ebay, so I cannot visualize ebay listings for regional sites such as ebay.in because the link to ebay.com is hardcoded.I searched around, but didn't find other projects that offer a similar way to work with site APIs and other data sources with the kind of user interface and detail that impure.com does in a realtime way within a browser window.This brings me to the questions:
-What technologies would be involved in creating a similar kind of project
-What are the open source tools that can help develop a fullscreen UI to render the workspace. Are there any alternatives to flash for this, and how do they compare
The goal would be to use standard python data structures, python scripts to do some processing on these data structures, scripts to gather data from csv, json and API sources such as google yahoo, wikipedia and flickr, and scripts to render graphs, tag clouds, network visualizations etc. Then bring them all together into a visual interface that supports drag drop and simple type checking.How would the python backend integrate with the UI.

I am trying to render an image with text and images that are on a .swf file. What i am doing is saving all the objects and their properties in an XML and then using imagemagick to render all that. the problem i am facing is that imagemagick treats fonts very different than Flash, so i don't get a perfect copy of what i see in the flash to what i see on the rendered image.
how to match font sizes between flash an imagemagick?

i have a datagrid which contains a number of itemrenderers, it is populated each time a user does a search. Is there an event which can tell me when the datagrid has completed rendering all new rows and item renderers?
I need to trigger an event once everything has been created so that i can resize then container which holds the grid.
Currently im using DataGridEvent.HEADER_RELEASE and CollectionEvent.COLLECTION_CHANGE events to manage this however the problem with these events is that they get called as each new row is being added to the datagrid.

My company has some software which we use to acquire data and interact with some hardware. If we wanted to put a mockup on a website which allows the user to get a feel for the UI (gather some data, change some settings etc.), what are some good methods to do so?I'm thinking either some clever javascript or flash. I've done some JS before but only to style elements of a page. I did some stuff with flash about 8 years ago and found it really fiddly.
So my questions; Are javascript/flash reasonable solutions for this or is there something better. What is likely to be the simpler/quicker route? Is there a better way to achieve the end result?] The demo doesn't need real data, just some fake/dummy example stuff is fine.

I want to create an interface navigatable through keyboard. The interface is somewhat like nested DVD menus, and it is not known in advance how many buttons there will be or where they will be placed. So for example you would be on button 1, if you press right, the closest button to the right would be selected. how would I go about enabling this? The purpose is to enable keyboard navigation for complex management screens for a game I am doing;
I would like this to be as independant and reusable as possible, which means I would like it to work with any clickable object, not just buttons, and certainly not my own custom class of buttons. This also means the buttons might be placed through the flash IDE and so placing them on a grid is not an option (I'd like this to be easy to use for non-techies).
My thinking goes like this: add all buttons to a manager, then select the first one, then on keypress, triangulate and select the closest in an angle of (+45degrees,-45degrees) of direction pressed. But it seems overkill to me, and I guess in some edge cases, some buttons will be forever unselectable.

A) Sort the data on the node specified (I tried, it doesnot sort correctly many times)
b) Search the XML nodes for the text the user inputs and display the data
Say he gets 5 results all five must be displayed.

A 3*3 grid, consisting of 9 squares (0-0, 0-1, 0-2, 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 2-0, 2-1, 2-2). I want to be able to navigate the grid using a keyboard by going up, down, left and right. If I hit the edge of the grid, I would like to "wrap" to the other side. This kind of menu is seen on games, mobile devices etc.
Does anyone have a good implementation of navigation algorithm (does not to be in AS3), rather something I can refer to?

I have a store style website that uses a grid format gallery to display a grid of thumbnail products which can then be clicked.url...I have created xml captions that sit ontop of each thumbnail in the grid. They display fine when static but I wanted them to only display when you mouse over the corresponding thumbnail.I have code that tweens all of the captions (thumb_caption) to 0% alpha and the tweens to 100% alpha upon MouseOver and then back to 0% alpha on MouseOut.At the moment there is one problem - When you hover over ANY thumbnail the caption for the LAST thumbnail fades in not the corresponding one for THAT thumbnail.Example - if I have 10 thumbnails and I hover over thumbnail 1 the caption for thumbnail 10 appears ontop of thumbnail 10. (not caption 1 over thumbnail 1 like it should!)[code]

I'm building a website where I hook people up so that they can anonymously vent to strangers. You either choose to be a listener, or a talker, and then you get catapulted into a one-on-one chat room. The reason for the app's construction is because you often can't vent to friends, because your deepest vulnerabilities can often be leveraged against you later on. (Like it or not, this is a part of human nature. Sad.)
I'm looking for some insight into how I should architect everything. I found this neat tutorial, [URL], which suggests using python & stackless + flash. Someone else suggested I should try using p2p sockets, but I don't even know where to begin to look for info on that.

I have a grid based game with eight bots each moving under their own instruction set, I have set them to return their ID and location when clicked, the game as it stands now is over 2k lines so I wont post it all here. On occasion two of the bots are merging into the same MC, clicking on either one or between the two merged ones will return the same ID (bot 0 returns that it is bot 1 in bot 1s location for example). To make it more confusing they are continuing to run their own separate code, bot 0 is not moving the same way as bot 1 is. Doing a var dump does not show anything as wrong, they all show up with the right IDs and locations.

am building a site in DW CS4. The site is for a custom nameplate service; once they choose a design and colorway, I'd like to allow customers to preview their name on the sign with, say, 6 different font options to choose from. I've never done any kind of interactive Flash--other than simple mouse actions, so I am at a total loss as to where to get started. Has anybody seen a template that might work?

tl;dr:Using MTASC, How can I take a MovieClip that exists on stage and interface with it through a custom class? I'm a UI/UX designer and interface engineer, and I've recently been trying to improve my development workflow. I've been trying to achieve the following workflow:Create the UI in Adobe IllustratorImport the UI into Adobe FlashSet up MovieClips to allow interactivity on the stageExport the finalized design as an .swfWrite code to interface with the various parts of the UIInject the code into the precompiled .swf using MTASCI can do all of the above, but I've been having problems when it comes to writing the code. I'd like to write object-oriented code as much as possible, but I can't seem to link my custom classes to anything that starts on the stage. How can I take a MovieClip that exists on stage and interface with it through a custom class using the MTASC?

Wonder if anyone has run into a situation in which Flash fails to recognize an embedded font with a title like "Gotham rounded" and a style of "italics?" I can't seem to embed the style because of the double name of the font.

I realize you can embed fonts using Text-Font Embedding in Flash CS5, but I see no option for a custom font. Not sure if this is possible anyways, but let's say I create all the letters in the alphabet using Illustrator, could I have those converted to a font usable in Flash CS5 (where each image corresponds to a letter.) If so, how?

I am using the standard Flex 3 BubbleChart component and I would like to customize a couple of the grid lines separately from the rest.
I would like to highlight a gridline in the X-direction as well as in the Y-direction to show a quadrant.
Is there any way to customize the look and feel of a subset of gridlines within a Flex chart (i.e. bubble chart)?

I've never used flex and don't have the library as far as I know, but I have a custom font I want to use in my flash program, and even though I have it imported into my library, when I move my files to another computer that does not have the custom font I'm using installed, it's replaced with a system default font.

To start - its best to say im new to Flex / OOP in general. I have been trying to add a custom class based on StrokedElement in order to implement a simple grid (not like the existing Flex Grids - this would just be for display - not holding elements etc...)

Is there a way to generate an instance of a class that implements an interface based on the name of the class?
I am trying:
var ClassReference:Object = getDefinitionByName("movement.OuterSpaceMovement") as IMovement;
var m:IMovement = new ClassReference as IMovement;

-But I am getting an error message ReferenceError: Error #1065 (OuterSpaceMovement) not defined.
I have several classes that implement the same interface (IMovement) but I need to be able to generate new instances of these classes and then pass these instances as a datatype (IMovement datatype) to other classes...
So then I tried:
var ClassReference:Class = getDefinitionByName("OuterSpaceMovement") as Class;
var m:IMovement = new ClassReference() as IMovement;
and this doesn't seem to work...but the following

I am trying to figure out how to open a pop up window in my Air application, in a secondary Window, instead of the main application window.I am using the ReusableFX components, which include a custom DataGrid with filtering and other capabilities. The filtering feature displays a pop up window via PopUpManager when you click on the top of a column in the grid.
PopUpManager.addPopUp(this, FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication as DisplayObject);
The problem is that the pop up window opens in the main application - I am assuming because of the 'topLevelApplication' reference.So, I need a way to open this window in the current Air "s:Window". I am assuming I need a way to walk up : this.parent.parent or this.owner.owner - though I have tried that and it did not seem to work (it said null reference).OR, is there a way to get the current top most window / component (NOT the main application / window)?
Update:I decided to create a new project for the component, and add in the Air libraries. Now I am able to access the "NativeApplication.nativeApplication.activeWindow" call. That gives me the correct Air window. However, it does not seem to be working:
PopUpManager.addPopUp(this, NativeApplication.nativeApplication.activeWindow as DisplayObject);
My popup does not appear. I am assuming because "activeWindow" is not actually a DisplayObject?(so how do I get the DisplayObject if that's the case?)

I'm trying to setup a DataGrid that contains a column of combo boxes. The values of the combo boxes are defined by data specific to that row. I cannot get this to work though, I'm asking for a solution to this, either fixing what I have below or a recommendation on a different way.One of the columns of my DataGrid has an object derived from a ComboBox for an ItemEditor. I have 2 custom components, which have their own nesting hierarchy ... One is container for another. I have to "familiarize them" with each other. The way I'm trying to achieve that is using global events (one side is firing and the other one is catching):
Application.application.addEventListener("Hello", function (data:Event):void{
// .. some actions
});

Then should be created the connection between container and it's child.
BUT, the only thing I could acheive is passing a reference to the Container in the DynamicEvent. Is there any chance that I could access the child at the event-handler function.

I have created a custom component based on spark.components.HGroup and it works mostly as needed, but I have this minor problem: I can not move it.
