View 2 RepliesI just discovered impure.com and was very impressed by what can be achieved in terms of visualizing data using their workspace. Although the platform is free to use, but not open source yet. This causes a few problems because the API section works with .com sites for eg. for ebay, so I cannot visualize ebay listings for regional sites such as ebay.in because the link to ebay.com is hardcoded.I searched around, but didn't find other projects that offer a similar way to work with site APIs and other data sources with the kind of user interface and detail that impure.com does in a realtime way within a browser window.This brings me to the questions:
-What technologies would be involved in creating a similar kind of project
-What are the open source tools that can help develop a fullscreen UI to render the workspace. Are there any alternatives to flash for this, and how do they compare
The goal would be to use standard python data structures, python scripts to do some processing on these data structures, scripts to gather data from csv, json and API sources such as google yahoo, wikipedia and flickr, and scripts to render graphs, tag clouds, network visualizations etc. Then bring them all together into a visual interface that supports drag drop and simple type checking.How would the python backend integrate with the UI.
Anyone can point me to free or commercial Ribbon component done for Adobe Flex or Aswing? I seen one at some point but for some reason cant find any now. (Please don't mention minddomo, since it has nothing to do do with my question).
View 2 RepliesMy company has some software which we use to acquire data and interact with some hardware. If we wanted to put a mockup on a website which allows the user to get a feel for the UI (gather some data, change some settings etc.), what are some good methods to do so?I'm thinking either some clever javascript or flash. I've done some JS before but only to style elements of a page. I did some stuff with flash about 8 years ago and found it really fiddly.
So my questions; Are javascript/flash reasonable solutions for this or is there something better. What is likely to be the simpler/quicker route? Is there a better way to achieve the end result?] The demo doesn't need real data, just some fake/dummy example stuff is fine.
I want to create an interface navigatable through keyboard. The interface is somewhat like nested DVD menus, and it is not known in advance how many buttons there will be or where they will be placed. So for example you would be on button 1, if you press right, the closest button to the right would be selected. how would I go about enabling this? The purpose is to enable keyboard navigation for complex management screens for a game I am doing;
I would like this to be as independant and reusable as possible, which means I would like it to work with any clickable object, not just buttons, and certainly not my own custom class of buttons. This also means the buttons might be placed through the flash IDE and so placing them on a grid is not an option (I'd like this to be easy to use for non-techies).
My thinking goes like this: add all buttons to a manager, then select the first one, then on keypress, triangulate and select the closest in an angle of (+45degrees,-45degrees) of direction pressed. But it seems overkill to me, and I guess in some edge cases, some buttons will be forever unselectable.
I am trying to create a XML file & a flash based interface which would:
A) Sort the data on the node specified (I tried, it doesnot sort correctly many times)
b) Search the XML nodes for the text the user inputs and display the data
Say he gets 5 results all five must be displayed.
I am trying to build a experimental interface (menu, text etc) which is based on a fine grid of points, on which i try to render custom fonts and shapes, by connecting the dots. I would store coordinates for characters (O consists of 4 lines for instance) and render them in an animation line by line, character by character.(this non interactive version is my first step)My question is, what would be the best way to store such a font collection, and execute the above. Any Thoughts? all ideas are welcome
View 1 RepliesI'm building a website where I hook people up so that they can anonymously vent to strangers. You either choose to be a listener, or a talker, and then you get catapulted into a one-on-one chat room. The reason for the app's construction is because you often can't vent to friends, because your deepest vulnerabilities can often be leveraged against you later on. (Like it or not, this is a part of human nature. Sad.)
I'm looking for some insight into how I should architect everything. I found this neat tutorial, [URL], which suggests using python & stackless + flash. Someone else suggested I should try using p2p sockets, but I don't even know where to begin to look for info on that.
I'm trying to create a Flex application that can automatically shrink based on the size of the components that it contains, so that a user can shrink it to a minimal view to see more of the HTML page it's embedded in.
I know how to change the size of the whole application using ExternalInterface, but I'm having trouble automatically figuring out how much the size changed when something is hidden or shown.
For example:
Let's say I have the following flex layout:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="vertical">
<mx:VBox width="100%" paddingTop="0" paddingBottom="0"
[Code]....
How can I hide one of the text fields and cause the VBox to shrink? I'm currently setting it to visible = false, but that doesn't seem to affect the parent VBox.
Once the VBox shrinks, how can I detect that the Application no longer needs so much space, and then go about figuring out how much less space it needs?
I've tried using ResizeEvent, but I haven't been able to get them to work, but I could be doing something wrong.
I have an xml with an xml-schema. The xml-schema defines an abstract complex type with 2 optional attributes that have default values. Then I have several complex types that extend the base one. And finally nodes of the types defined.So I load the xml and when I parse each node, the optional attributes are not present at all.I've tried fooling around with the namespaces, even[code]...
No luck. Something similar was being experienced by this guy on codingforums, but that was like 5 years ago. Same is happening to me with firefox 3.0.11 - the xml is shown without the default attributes.For now I'm setting the default values in code, but isn't there a way to make them available from the xml-schema?[code]...
I was just wondering if anyone knew what software was used to achieve the ribbon effect at the beginning of this flash template: [URL]
View 2 RepliesI use this code to create and show a MessageWindow:
var newTitleWindow:MessageWindow = PopUpManager.createPopUp(contextView,MessageWindow, true) as MessageWindow;
newTitleWindow.text = message;
PopUpManager.centerPopUp(newTitleWindow);
[Code]....
There is no nested components displayed when I run my app.
The debugger shows they are created and visible.
To my "amusement" the components are shown when I replace s:TitleWindow with mx:TitleWindow.
I really want to use spark TitleWindow.
Is there a way to generate an instance of a class that implements an interface based on the name of the class?
I am trying:
var ClassReference:Object = getDefinitionByName("movement.OuterSpaceMovement") as IMovement;
var m:IMovement = new ClassReference as IMovement;
trace("startup..." + m);
-But I am getting an error message ReferenceError: Error #1065 (OuterSpaceMovement) not defined.
I have several classes that implement the same interface (IMovement) but I need to be able to generate new instances of these classes and then pass these instances as a datatype (IMovement datatype) to other classes...
So then I tried:
var ClassReference:Class = getDefinitionByName("OuterSpaceMovement") as Class;
var m:IMovement = new ClassReference() as IMovement;
and this doesn't seem to work...but the following
var m:IMovement = new OuterSpaceMovement();
I'm trying to make an interface akin to the DS (have two screens, top just displaying the images, bottom handling input), but I'm not sure how... Would I just make 2 different flash files then merge them somehow, or would that not give me two seperate screens?
View 0 RepliesI am new to actionscript 3.0 and I want to make an application similar to the picture above where it has features (pointed by arrows) like those navigation thumbnail and the zoom scroll
View 4 RepliesI want to make an interface that can be controlled by the mouse or by the arrow keys - the only simlat to what I'm trying to achieve is the game Colin McRae.
Lets say I have 3 buttons. If I move my mouse on any of them it gets an mouse over effect.
What I want to do is to combine this with the arrow keys that should be able to jump between the buttons - and the one selected is in the "over" state - to select it I press return.
i seem to have trouble finding on the internet what happends when one interface extends another interface.
View 2 Repliesi have an xml which contains 'interface' sub tag, iam converting xml to object using SampleXmlDecoder. compiler did not allow me to access the value of the 'inteface' attrible of the resultobject.
[Code]....
its treating interface as keyword. the solution for this.
It seems that Flex 4.5 can not compile my old AIR applications that implement the IDisposable interface. And how should memory management be done from now on?
View 1 RepliesI am overriding the addItem() function of an array collection and I would like to detect if the added item implements a particular interface. Previously I used the, is operator to detect the class type, but now that I am using an interface for classes I would rather test to see if the object implements the interface. I expect I could just try and cast the object as the interface and see if it's not null. Is this the best way to do it? I could also just create a new addFunction() that only accepts objects of the interface type.
View 2 RepliesIn ActionScript (AS3) how do I find all the classes that implement a particular interface?
View 3 RepliesI am building a tabbed interface for switching between various similar layers. Each layer will have a number of graphs. By dragging with the mouse the graphs can be rearranged or even moved between layers. My question is, is it best practice to register a unique mediator for each layer that keeps track of the layers content / organization, or should i keep track of it all with one central mediator.some considerations:
the layer contents and organization will be saved(in a db) so that it can be restored when a user comes back to the app.the layers themselves are functionally identical.the user can add and remove layers at will.
Let's say I have an interface
public interface IFoo {
...
}
[Code]....
and have it be instantiated at runtime by a factory.
However, the compiler won't let me do this-- it's trying to do "new IFoo" in the generated ActionScript.
How to get around this? How can I use an interface and a factory purely in MXML?
I'm developing an application that will randomize a list of words, and display them to the user. The user will then be able to drag the box containing each word over a Cartesian plane, and drop it anywhere they like. They will also be able to link various words together on the same plane. Once a user has completed these tasks, I want to update a database with that user's data - the coordinates of each word, as well as any parent words that may exist for each word. I started developing the application in Flex, but I'm running into problems integrating the data manipulation. It might just be me, but I find the way Flex is structured to be very counter-intuitive. I'm playing around with shifting the project over to perhaps a JQuery build. I'm proficient in neither JQuery nor Flex, however, and I'm not sure which one will be easier to pick up and develop a working prototype with.
View 1 RepliesFor a Flex application that is used to search and display results (no write operations), I am currently storing data in a relational database, but rather than querying the DB via the app, I am doing a nightly write of the data, including its relationships, to an XML file.Then, through Flex, I am loading that XML file, parsing it into custom Objects, and "querying" those objects as necessary.
It works well basically filtering an ArrayCollection of these Objects based on search criteria. Versus querying the DB, full text search, for instance, is extremely fast in this scenario.But what are some potential drawbacks? How valid is this approach?
As in Java I want to know if my reference is declared as Interface.
function foo(classRef:Class){
if(classRef.isInterface(){
//something
[code].....
I am looking for some decent tutorial that will explain the correlation between flash and flex (how can I use flex's coding ability with flash's design interface).
View 3 RepliesI am using this guide for passing data to modules "Using interfaces for module communication". For getting child module instances they have done this
var ichild:* = mod.child as IModuleInterface; (mod = moduleLoader)
What should I do to get instance of parent application inside module? How can I call parent methods inside modules?
What does a web designer need to migrate to Flex quickly? A: tell me how I can get good fast B: tell me why it would be unrealistic to learn Flex quickly I want here both sides of it.
TELL ME WHAT I NEED
- Projects I need to complete in Flex
- Tutorials
- Key concepts
- Other technologies in a nutshell (webservices, SOAP, AJAX, HTML5 etc.)
[code].....
This Flex reference should include everything needed for beginning Adobe Flash Builder 4
I need to register events in flex and listen to them in java script. Is there any way other than using external interface.
